At South Paulding High School we are committed to providing a rigorous curriculum where students and teachers work together to prepare all students for future success through a partnership with the home and community. We value the involvement of our stu- dents outside the classroom in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as band, cheerleading, clubs, and athletics, as we know leaders are developed through these activities. South Pauld- ing High School not only strives for all of our students to graduate high school on-time, with their class, but also expects that they will be college or career ready after graduation. Dear Spartan Fans and Guests, It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I welcome all of you to South Paulding High School and to another exciting season of Spartan Football and athletics. During the 2015 – 2016 athletic season, all athletic teams put forth tremendous efforts in all compe- titions. The efforts by coaches and players resulted in South Paulding winning the Paulding County Superintendents Cup for the 2015 – 2016 school year. The 2016 - 2017 athletic season will put forth many challenges as South Paulding participate in contests against all Paulding Coun- ty High Schools and other schools from surrounding counties. South Paulding High School is now in Region 5 – AAAAAA. The contests that will take place in the 5 – AAAAAA Region will provide excellent and exciting competition as SPHS takes on high schools from Douglas County, Fulton County, Coweta County and Atlanta Public Schools. At South Paulding High School, the athletic department believes in promoting quality character development in all of our student ath- letes. The athletic department at South Paulding High School stresses and instills in student athletes the importance of respect, respon- sibility, good sportsmanship, integrity and competitiveness that is necessary to succeed later in life. HEAD FOOTBALL COACH ED KOESTER Over the years Coach Koester has touched the lives of countless young men and women. Building successful programs in three states and having coached in four, Coach Koester has been consistent with building winning pro-
grams using the four pillars of; FAITH, TRUST, VALOR, and WORK ETHIC. Coach’s life work is building winning pro- grams by increasing numbers, improving facilities, motivating students to live wholesome lives; while teaching them how to hold each other accountable. The time honored task of building winning teams carries no specific set of rules. Each situation requires insight and innovation. Coach Koester’s experiences here at South Paulding High School have been some of the highlights of a 4-decade career. Coach Koester has coached various All-Star games with the biggest being the first American football game played behind the Iron Curtain in 1989 in Moscow and two others in Leningrad and Talin, Estonia. A year later in 1990 Coach lead 95 players to New Zealand and Australia for a series of football exhibition games and coaching clinics. He is a regular consultant to various college and high school coaches fromOklahoma to Georgia on his offensive philosophy – especially the passing game. Having spoken at numerous clinics, including the Glazier Clinics, Coach Koester enjoys the opportunity to pass along the experiences of a life spent in coaching football. Three years ago Coach Koester took over the South Paulding High School program that had won only 29 games in its seven-year history. Over the last three years at South Paulding, Coach Koester has a record of 27-8 and has lead his team to the playoffs three times. A 10-win season in 2013 in his inaugural season is a tough mark to measure up to
each year. The Spartans have shown the ability to stand toe to toe with area foes another mark of Koester coached teams. This year proves to be interesting and challenging as the Spartans replace 18 of 22 starters off last year Region Runner-up spot.
While at South Cobb Koester won 22 of his last 33 games includ- ing the 1st and only play-off victory in the 60-year history of the school. As Head Coach and Athletic Coordinator at Fort Worth Ar- lington Heights High School his leadership developed the Yellow-
Jackets into one of the most successful and productive total programs in Texas. In 1995 every sport qualified for the state-playoffs. While at Bixby High School in Oklahoma his teams where rated in the top 10 each year and reached the state-quarter finals twice. With 162 wins as a Head Coach; Coach Koester has never taken over a winning Program, yet developed them each into winning programs. Raising numbers at Cherokee High School from 16 to 115 in three

years, and putting 140 kids on the field this year at South Paulding; lend credence to a career as a builder.
Coach Koester and his wife, Diane, have been married for almost 42 years. Diane boasts that she has been in
the stands for all but one of her husband’s games. Together they have four children. Amy, a teacher in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Kyle, an attorney in Woodstock, Georgia. Kurtis, who works in the insurance industry in Alpharetta, Georgia. And Klay, who is the Offensive Coordinator at Virginia-Wise University. Both Coach Koester and his wife hold leadership positions in their church – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Coach has never failed to give praise to assistant coaches and admin- istrators who have aided him in serving students through athletics. He understands loyalty and that a team is larger than those on the field. Coach Koester respects the opportunity to work with young men through football and education knowing he makes his greatest contribution to society on the sideline.

SPARTANS FOOTBALL COACHES Coach Carmichael has been instrumental in the design and execution of the SPHS offense which has aver- aged close to 30 points per game over the last 3 years. He has been coaching for 11 years and the last 9 years have been at South Paulding. Josh hangs his hat on a famous JohnWooden quote “Things turn out best for those whomake the most of how things turn out.” He and his wife Emily have 4 children Caleb 7yrs, Kenzie 5yrs, Cylas 3yrs and Samuel 3months. A graduate of Liberty University with a degree OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR JOSH CARMICHAEL
in Physical Education, Josh brings a strong work ethic and will to succeed to the classroom as he loves the opportunity to in- teract with young people and share his love of Christ. Coach Koester comments that “Josh has all the ingredients of a coach who will make a difference; Strong faith, devoted family, the will to build his craft, and an unbelievable ability for compassion for youth.
SPECIAL TEAMS & SECONDARY - MIKE WAGNER Coach Mike Wagner serves the youth of Sparta for a greater purpose. His 25 years of coaching experience are supported by his desire to bring his life experiences into value for the youth of today, thus fulfilling Gods purpose to serve one another. Amember of the 1985 and ’86 National Champion Georgia Southern teams has motivated him to coach with intensity and perfection of details has he moves from coaching defensive linemen to leading the rebuilding of a secondary. CoachWagner a valuedmember of the Physical Ed. Department works closely with younger players in the weight room to pass along his desires of success. Coach gains support for his efforts from a great family; wife Charlotte and he have 2 children Katie a SPHS cheerleader and son Chaz a cadet at West Point. Mike has delivered the same advice to all teammembers “If you want something you’ve never had youmust be willing to do something you’ve never done.” Coach Koester comments that “Mike brings a sense of humor and a mature un- derstanding of kids and the game that acts as a glue for our staff and players”. OFFENSIVE LINE COACH - JOSHWILLIAMS CoachWilliams is entering his 5th year as a coach, four of which have been with the Spartans. Having played at West Georgia before entering law enforcement, Coach Williams has developed offensive lineman entering the collegiate ranks each year here at SPHS. It was his experiences in law enforcement that inspired him to get into coach- ing and satisfy his desire to be a positive influence on young people. Coach himself is motivated by Bear Bryant’s message, “It’s not the will to win but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference”. This holds true as Coach has shown a tireless effort to develop his craft as an offensive line coach. He and his wife Sherie have 3 sons, Cole a GSU student, Luke 14yrs and a 9th grade player, and Trent 11 years; all of which are true Spartans through and through. Coach Koester comments that, “Josh is one of the most impressive young coaches I run across. To develop the craft of coaching offensive linemen usually takes years, this Josh has done in a short time and continues to grow his craft and produce winners in his position.”

QUARTERBACK COACH - CODY NEAL
Coach Neal has truly stepped in and been a great asset to our programby living the motto of Jerry Rice: “I will do what others won’t so tomorrow I can do what others can’t.” Coach Neal a KSU grad has been on and around many excellent coaches as it shows in his work ethic and energy he displays working with the QB’s. Having played for a short time at LaGrange College he possesses knowl- edge and skill experience for coaching the demanding po- sition of QB. Having attended and played for Coach Bruce Cobliegh at Harrison High School, Cody hopes to return to his players the same life lessons and love for the game his
coaches provided him. Cody Neal gains support for pursuing his passion of coaching from family and steady girlfriend Sarah Pettine. Coach Koester comments that “Cody has proven that youth can be an asset as his lack of experience is removed with his hard work, initiative and willingness to improve his players as he grows in the profession. Our program is better because of Coach Neal”. DEFENSIVE LINEMEN - NATE BLASÉ
The Spartan Defensive front will be in good hands this year as they will be tutored by Coach Blasé who is working hard to develop an area vacated by graduation in 2016. With 10 years’ experience and coming fromMt Paran, with others stops in Gwinnett and Cherokee Counties his experience and go get’em approach should prove valuable this season. Nate a KSU grad will be also teachingWorld History at SPHS. Coach Blasé played college ball at Maranatha University on both sides of the ball as a lineman. His business approach to coaching football is a reflection of his reason to coach as he hopes tomake a positive impact on today’s players has his mentors did he. Nate is supported in his coaching endeavors by steady girlfriend Danielle McNally. As a history teacher it’s easy to see why he quotes Teddy Roosevelt’s DARE GREATLY as inspiration for self and play- ers…the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly… Coach Koester comments that “We are blessed to have Nate join our staff, a hard worker who has experienced the battles of the gird iron and enjoyed great successes, The Spartan defense will benefit greatly.” 9TH GRADE COACH - BRANDON (TIM) QUINN Coach Quinn is our Head 9th grade Coach and brings 9 years of experience in coaching and teaching that age group. Entering his second year here at SPHS Tim’s intelligence and compassion have made the best man to deal with the complexities of 9th grade players and their adjustment to high school. Tim is supported at home by his wife Rachel and their 3 children with a fourth on the way. Addy is 5, Evan is 4, andWyatt is 2; number four will join us sometime in the first half of the season. As the “Teacher of the Year at Loganville High School before coming here we are happy to have him teach History at SPHS. Coach Quinn hopes to pass along the life skills he attained while playing. Coach Koester says that “Our numbers of 10th graders contributing this fall on the varsity are a result of the fine work Coach Quinn does with the 9th grade.” 9TH GRADE COACH - MICHAEL KOSITZKE Coach Kositzke coming to us most recently fromWisconsin while assistant the 9th grade while also serving as the Head SpartanWrestling Coach. A graduate of Nebraska-Kearney and Central Michigan Universities Coach has been di- recting football and wrestling programs for 10 years. With a masters in history Michael will also teach world geography. His wife Michele and son Liam age 4 are his biggest supporters. The enjoyment of watching youngmen grow and develop keeps Coach in the business, as a quote fromVince Lombardi “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have” inspires his devotion to coaching and teaching. Coach Koester comments: “We are blessed to find a qualityWrestling coach who has a passion for coaching at this age group. We look forward as the two programs benefit fromhis tutorage.

9TH GRADE COACH - DONALD CLARK Coach Clark a long time middle school coach
moves to us this year as a 9th grade assistant and psychol- ogy teacher. AWest Georgia grad in Broad Field Social Science coach Clark will be working primarily with the Offensive and Defensive lines. Don and his wife Mari have two children Callie age 15 and Elijah age 6. His ambition in coaching and teaching is to help young people become better in all they do. A high level of expectation will take the field with
Coach Clark as he quotes Yoda “ Do or Do not there is no try” Coach Koester ands “ It is great to add Coach Clark to our 9th grade staff giving that group great experience and knowledge of the game” 9TH GRADE COACH - GREG LASALLE
Greg LaSalle’s dreamof becoming a high school coach gets a kick start this year as he re- turns to his alma mater to work with the 9th grade. Greg was an impressive student of the game while playing for Coach Koester and the Spartans. He is currently attending Chatta- hoochee Tech as he advances toward the crazy world of coaching. He brings a great love for the game and a desire to help young players develop. Greg quotes his father in that “The game is 5% physical and 95%mental; youmust have a top dogmentality”. “We are happy Greg is part of our program as he develops his craft as a coach, he will benefit from a staff of wonderful role models” says Coach Koester. SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO DEFENSE - TIMMITCHELL Entering his 5th season with the Spartans Coach Mitchell will take on a new role as special assistant to defense. Timhaving coached for 12 years with all age groups will be busy with his Saturday’s watching Dawson Mitchell last year’s Defensive Player of the Year start his collegiate career at Reinhardt. The Mitchell’s meaning Joy and Katie are ardent Spartan fans and have provided tremendous support for many years. This year Timwill help orga- nize and offer an extra set of eyes to the defense. Timhas often offered to the Spartans an insight of “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. “We are blessed to con- tinue our programwith TimMitchell on board, his desire to see youngmen grow and devel- op while learning lessons far beyond X’s and O’s is a benefit to us all” Says Coach Koester. SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE HEAD COACH - KYLE KOESTER Kyle having stood on the sidelines with his dad since age 5 is probably best equipped to handle the sharp voice of the head coach and communicate to others in a more diplomat- ic way. Kyle’s coaching career started when trying to teach his mom the finer aspects of playing catch; this grew quickly when in high school he was apt to steel to opponent’s signals and convey the next play to his teammates. Kyle holds a Juris Doctorate from Cooley Law School and runs a small law firm inWoodstock. Kyle and his wife Natalie have 3 daughters Evelyn 8, Elouise 5, and Emery 2. Calling himself the ‘Get Back” coach Kyle offers advice to players in how to stay in the game and has built a strong following of CAN FANS which bring noise unsurpassed to opposing teams. His value to the team is as tre-
mendous as his desire to serve young kids and teach them to pull for each other. He quotes Martha Graham “No one ever raised a statue to a critic” His dad says “Kyle has forever known what’s best in school, play, life and family; there is great pride to have a son stand with you on Friday night”. ASSISTANT OFFENSIVE LINE COACH - TYLER HOLCOMB
Tyler is an assistant offensive line coach with great promise. Tyler is entering his second stint as a Spartan Coach having served previously as a 9th grade assistant. Tyler currently working on his undergrad degree at Kennesaw State was a offensive line stand out for the Coach Glanton coached Spartans. Tyler having played in the initial year of football at Rein- hardt changedmajors and schools now attending KSU. With a season as the offensive line coach at an Atlanta prep school Tyler works alongside CoachWilliams developing the OL for SPHS. Coach Koester remarks: “Tyler has the insights for a young coach that will lead him into a productive role on any staff. We’re excited to have himbe a part of our staff.”

A native of Douglasville, Georgia Mr. McConnell graduated with a degree in Music Education in 2006 from the University of Georgia. Mr. McConnell was a four year member of the University of Georgia Redcoat Band and a Drum Major for the Redcoats in 2006. Mr. McConnell is currently in his tenth year of teaching and his third year as Director of Bands at South Paulding High School. He previously taught at Houston County High School and Lithia Springs High School. Mr. McConnell was the 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year for Lithia Springs High School and the 2012-2013 High School Teacher of the Year for the Douglas County School System. Mr. McConnell credits the success of his teaching career to the support of his wife, Mary Frances. DJ and Mary Frances have two sons, Ian and Jonah. They also have three dogs (Emma, Jake, and Lucy) and two cats (Bella and Ripley.)

A native of Sharpsburg, Bethany Nickelson graduated from the University of West Georgia in 2013. She has performed and taught with many different musical groups across the state during her career. Bethany student taught at Whitewater High School in Fayetteville, Georgia and then began her teaching career at Troup County High School. She is happy to call South Paulding her home for the third year. She is engaged to her wonderful fiancé Jonathan Greene and will be married in April of 2017.

Coach Annemarie Edwards’ is in her 17th year of teaching and second year of coaching in Paulding County. She has been at SPHS since the school opened. She teaches AP Government, AP Psychology, and American Government. Coach Edwards attended Florida State University where she earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in International Affairs andWalden University, where she earned her Ed.S. in Teacher Leadership. Coach Edwards has beenmarried for 21 years to her husband, Stephen Segrest and they have three children, Graham (SPHS Varsity Competition
Cheer), Elijah (7th grade Junior Spartan football) and Anneliese (SSA Soccer).

Born in Nashville, TN but a Native to Georgia, I raised in a structured but spiritual home. I have been re- cording customized cheer raps for the last 6 years withmany of the well-known All Star cheer teams nationally and in Chile. Recently I was able to hear my recordings on ESPN; what a blast that was! I have been coaching since I was sixteen. My love for children has been withinme for as long as I can re- member; perhaps it stems from coming from a large family. One of the most rewarding parts of coaching is watching an athlete’s face light up after working hard on a skill then finally accomplishing that skill. Anoth- er reward is when they exit the stage after perform- ing and come running towards me with open arms and happy hearts because they did so well, not indi- vidually but as a team. Moments like this are precious and why I love to coach.
Coach Toler has spent her life either cheering or coaching cheerleading! She has spent numerous years as part of the Spartan Cheer Program and worn many different hats whichmakes her in invaluable resource. Coach Toler is our Junior Varsity Coach! Shannon is a full time teacher in the Paulding County School District. She is the proudmomof Hannah, Hay- lie, Gracie (7th grade cheerleader), Brianna, and the infamous Luke! We are very excited to have Coach Toler as part of the Spartan Cheer Program!!!

JANET OGLESBY – HEAD COACH Coach Janet Oglesby is entering her eleventh year at South Paulding High School where she started the program in 2006. Under Oglesby’s helms, the Spartans have advanced to the state tournament four of the last six years, finishing region runner-up three times. The Spartans had their best finish in school history in 2012 as they advanced to the Elite Eight and finished tied for 5th place in the state. Prior to starting the Spartan program, she served as the head coach at Harrison High School for eleven years where her team finished state runner-up twice and cap- tured the 2000 AAAAA State Championship. While at Harrison, Coach Oglesby was awarded many honors, including AAAAA Georgia Coach of the Year, Cobb County Coach of the Year and Region Coach of the Year. She has also coached in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and Georgia Dugout Club All-Star games. In 2015, Coach Oglesby was
inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame. She is a graduate of Fayette County High School, where she is a member of the FCHS Hall of Fame, and played college softball at Georgia Southern University. While at Georgia Southern, she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing. She completed her graduate work at Georgia State University earning a Master of Science degree in Sports Administration. After working in college athletics, Coach Oglesby attended Kennesaw State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education and served as an assistant softball coach. Her teaching responsibilities include Personal Fitness, General PE, Health, and Sports Medicine. She and her husband John have two children, Kalin and Jake who are both SPHS alumni. GARY JONES – ASSISTANT COACH Coach Jones enters his seventh year as an assistant coach with the Spartan Softball Programwhere he will serve as a varsity assistant and the junior varsity head coach. Hewas born and raised in Cobb Countywhere he graduated fromOsborne High School. Coach Jones earned a B.S. in Business Administration and a B.S. in SecondaryMath Education fromKennesaw State University. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Secondary Math Education fromPiedmont College. CoachJoneshasbeenteachingMathatSPHSsince2008. PriortocomingtoSPHS,hetaughtatHarrisonHighSchoolfrom2000to2003andSouthPauldingMiddleSchool from 2005 to 2008. His coaching experience includes sixteen years in slow and fast pitch softball. He also was an assistant football coach (receivers and defensive backs) and an assistant girls’ soccer coach at South Paulding Middle School. Coach Jones enjoys spending time with his three children and six grandchildren. BRYCE SELLERS – ASST. COACH Coach Sellers enters his first year working with the Spartan Softball program. He is originally from Paulding County where most of his family resides and is a 2010 grad- uate of South Paulding High School. While in high school, Coach Sellers played basketball, football, baseball, and ran track. After graduation, he continued his athletic careeratShorterUniversity inRome,GAonafootballscholarshipand joinedthebaseballteamforthefallseason.HegraduatedfromTheUniversityofWestGeorgia inthe spring of 2015with a degree in Health and Physical Education. His hobbies include fishing, summer sporting events, exercising, hiking, and spending timewith his friends and family. Coach Sellers has a twin brother (Brock) and a younger sister (Victoria). His grandfather, Sammy McClure, and his uncles, Reggie and Sammy McClure are the biggest influences in his life. His uncle, Lloyd Turner, spent seven years in the minors reaching AAA level, and is now the hitting coach for the Vermont Lake Monsters in the Oakland A’s system. “Sportshashadamajor impactonmy life.Sportsteachesyoungmenandwomena lotabout life.Itcanhumbleyou,teachesyouworkethic,andalsohowtoworkwellwith others in a team setting. MISSY TOLBERT ASST. COACH & HEAD JUNIOR SPARTAN COACH Missy is in her fifth year workingwith the SPHSsoftballprogram. Sheservesasthe Head Coach for the Junior Spartan team and also serves as a varsity and junior varsity assistant coach in the Spartan Softball Program. She graduated from Harrison High School where she was a 4-year varsity letter winner in fast pitch softball. During her high school years, she played gold level travel ball for the East Cobb Softball Association, playing in ASANationals six years. Missy contin- ued her softball career at the collegiate level, playing two years at the University of West Georgia (Gulf South Conference DII) and two years at Kennesaw State University (Atlantic Sun Conference D1). While at the University of West Georgia she broke all pitching records and was selected to the All-Conference Team twice. Her softball recognitions include: Marietta Daily Journal Pitcher of the Year, Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week, East Cobb’s Continuance of Excellence in Softball, and Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week. She and her husband Brian have two sons, Bryce and Jase.
