Derrick Coleman Deputy Commissioner Alabama Department of Revenue

Derrick Coleman joined the team at the Alabama Department of Revenue in 1993, beginning his career in the Vehicle Valuation Section of the Property Tax Division. Prior to being named Deputy Commissioner, Derrick served as Director of the Property Tax Division, building on his experience as a supervisor in the Real Property and Field Operations sections of the division. As Deputy Commissioner, Derrick is responsible for overseeing the Property Tax, Sales and Use Tax, and Internal Audit/Security Divisions, and the Office of Taxpayer Advocacy. Derrick serves as ADOR representative on the GIS Executive Committee and is a member of the Auburn University Government and Economic Development Institute (GEDI) advisory board. When away from the office, he enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Randall Winkler Sales Tax Division Director Alabama Department of Revenue

Randy Winkler began his career with the Alabama Department of Revenue in 1986 as a field auditor for the Miscellaneous Tax Division in Mobile, Alabama. He has worked in numerous different tax types and held various management positions within the department. Prior to being named Director of the Sales & Use Tax Division in 2017, Randy served as Assistant Director of the Business and License Tax Division. As Director of the Sales & Use Tax Division, Randy is responsible for overseeing the Tax Administration, Local Tax, Exemptions, Miscellaneous Tax, Wholesale Retail Accountability, and Assessments Sections. A native of Mobile, Alabama, Randy received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Alabama.

Scott Ward Vice President of Sales Hostess Brands

Scott Ward has served as Vice President of Sales with Hostess Brands since February 2014. He helped lead Hostess out of chapter 7 bankruptcy and directed the transition from DSD delivery to a successful Warehouse delivered snacks model in the Convenience channel. From 2002 – 2014, he was Vice President with Ferrara Candy Company and the merged Brands from Farley’s & Sathers. Prior to that, he served as National Sales Manager with Brach’s Confections. He began his career with Sathers Candy Company as a region manager in the southeast US in 1992.

Scott lives in Shawnee Kansas with his wife Dana where they have raised five children.

Nicholas “Nick” Smith Director of Category Management for Small Format Hostess Brands Nicholas Smith (Nick) is the Director of Category Management for Small Format at Hostess Brands. Prior to Hostess, Nick spent 10 years at Mars Wrigley and Nestle Purina, working in Category Management for the Convenience and Pet Specialty channels, respectively. Recently, Nick, along with the rest of the Hostess Category and Sales team members, were awarded Convenience Store News 2022 Category Captains of the Year for Packaged Bakery.

Jim Duke Senior Manager, Industry Engagement Altria Group Distribution Company

A native of Washington, D.C., Jim began his career with Philip Morris USA in 2001 as a Territory Sales Manager in Northern Virginia. After roles that covered both people and account management, Jim took a position at Altria Group Distribution Company’s (AGDC) headquarters in the Trade Relations Department in 2011. Following several years in this role, Jim continued his development by taking a position in the State Relations Department, covering responsibilities pertaining to minimum price, state revenue compliance, and legislative activation and advocacy. In his current role, Jim is Senior Manager, Industry Engagement with Altria Group Distribution Company. He is primarily responsible for managing a team that is focused on driving the quality and quantity of advocacy efforts in support of Altria Client Services’ Government Affairs team in all 50 states. This work further supports the development and execution of engagement systems that enhance alignment with the states, the industry and AGDC. On a personal level, Jim received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Rice University in Houston, Texas in 1997. In 2008, Jim continued his education with a Master of Business Administration Degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida and is currently working towards gaining a Masters in Political Management Degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Jim currently resides not too far from his hometown of Washington, D.C. in Midlothian, Virginia with his wife, Cinthya, and his two children, Matthew (16) and Isabella (13).
