FROM THE EDITOR
J ust as this issue was due to go to press, we started to hear the word Ida. Ida, Ida, Ida. And then she made her presence known. Within hours of her arrival, the entire city was without power and the surrounding bayou communities and river parishes, so much a part of our way of life, were devastated in her wake. It will be a long and arduous recovery; the needs are great, but our resiliency is even greater. A quick touch base with some of the people on our A-List reveals how quickly they've sprung into action. Ali McNally, who graces our cover, led a grassroots effort to personally deliver water and ice to some of our hardest hit neighborhoods. Beatriz Ball committed a portion of her company's online sales to Second Harvest Food Bank. Others quietly gave speedy financial support to organizations serving the most vulnerable. And Deanna Rodriguez, CEO and President of Entergy New Orleans, has been working around the clock as we navigate the power of Ida's wrath. I hope that you enjoy getting to know our A-List as much as I have. Inspiration, optimism, hope, and kindness go a very long way.

Following Hurricane Ida, Melissa Martin of Mosquito Supper Club called on New Orleanians to aid and support the bayou communities that suffered during the devastating storm. Through Bayou Fund, those in need have directly received water, ice, and gas as well as nourishing meals and money as they begin to rebuild their lives. bayoufund.org

-LIST A THE
2021's MOST INFLUENTIAL NEW ORLEANIANS
By k at y danos & m i cha e l a b e chl e r | photos by chr i s gr ang e r
W e've been working on our annual A-List issue for several months now. Getting to know such a diverse and inspirational roster of entrepreneurs, creatives, and influencers is always exciting. In reading this year's interviews, an overwhelmingly common thread appeared immediately in each and every set of responses. It's impossible to miss. Though phrased in many different ways from a multitude of perspectives, vantage points, and life experiences, it all comes down to an unrivaled love for the people of New
Orleans. One after another, I read about our "DNA," our "greatest asset," and "our soul." It makes sense. We've had quite a year of introspection and simplification brought on by the pandemic; we've spent more time with family and neighbors in our parks, on our bikes, and in our streets. I know that if we had posed similar questions post-Ida to this group of leaders and innovators, their voices would be even louder. Indeed, we are resilient, we are tenacious, we are kind, and we are compassionate. We are New Orleans and we will build back brighter and better!
REBECCA REBOUCHÉ ABITA SPRINGS & HOLY CROSS ARTIST & PAINTER
Why in New Orleans? New Orleans feels like a loophole in the natural order of the universe. It feels like a place that is a portal to another place. And to make art you need to be in a place with that kind of possibility. What about New Orleans inspires you? I love how Nola has this sort of refusal to be tamed. She's a wild beast. Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. A snowball, a swimming pool in summer, a good thunderstorm when I have nowhere to be, marching bands practicing for parades.
22
ADORE • A-LIST 2021
Describe what you see as our future. It would be so inspiring to see New Orleans flip the script and become a leader at the forefront of environmentally friendly events and spend its money on the artists, the musicians, and on defending the preservation of the beautiful natural landscape of our rare and fragile city. What advice would you give your twenty-year-old self? Read more books.
Favorite walk A stroll among the flowers of the Botanical Gardens in City Park Favorite food and where to get it Fresh baguette from Bellegarde Bakery Favorite place to go with your family Fontainebleau State Park Name a necessary extravagance Organic food, regenerative farming, and mineral water Song that can always put you in a great mood Always Be My Baby by Mariah Carey Your go-to outfit Lekha dresses to paint in First thing you do when you wake up Walk to the river and write in my journal

CECE COLHOUN UPTOWN ARTIST & CREATIVE
Why in New Orleans? One of my ancestors, a Villeré, was a founding father of the city. Frenchmen Street is actually named after this group of men. Another ancestor, Jacques Philippe Villeré, was the first native born governor of the state. I love my heritage here and I'm proud of it. What about New Orleans inspires you? Its soul. What would you tell your twenty-year-old self? I love you. Describe your charitable work or favorite causes. Bridge House/Grace House because addiction and behavioral health differences need to be de-stigmatized. Planned Parenthood because women should have full discretion over their bodies. And Son of a Saint – providing financial support to this organization directly impacts our community. Describe the greatest influence on your life. God.

TERRANCE OSBORNE GRETNA ARTIST & GALLERY OWNER Terrance Osborne Gallery Favorite meal and where to get it The Orbit Bowl from The Daily Beet Favorite simple indulgence I enjoy buying and reading Disney art books Favorite place to listen to music Preservation Hall Favorite place to score things for your home Disco Warehouse A book you are reading now Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson Name a necessary extravagance First class on airplanes Favorite movie of all time The Matrix First thing you do when you wake up Sit in my backyard and listen to the birds singing and pool water running
Describe what you love about what you do. I love that I can form an idea in my mind and put it on the surface. This seems simple but when somebody tells me that my work is beautiful, it's like being told that my mind is beautiful. It's the best feeling. Why in New Orleans? I often say that if you are an artist living in New Orleans and aren't inspired then you are half dead. There is so much culture and so many people expressing it that it's contagious. Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. In most other places, people keep to themselves. In New Orleans we talk to strangers like we know them. We hug them. We invite them to our "crawfish berl." It always puts me in a good mood when I see locals being friendly. What about New Orleans inspires you? I'm inspired by how colorful our culture is. Our food is flavorful and spicy. We paint our houses exotic colors and our fashion matches it. The way we curve, throw, and drag our words is captivating. The people inspire me.

JOSH MAYER FAUBOURG ST. JOHN CREATIVE PRINCIPAL PETERMAYER
Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. The humidity. It's a reassuring presence. It feels like home. Describe what you see as our future. New Orleans need not be afraid of progress and change. Because no matter what, we will always evolve in our own unique way. Always have.
Describe what you love about what you do.
I love that moment when the people you are working with come up with an original and simple way to solve a complex problem. The excitement of that kind of creativity is electric. Why in New Orleans? I've lived in big cities all over the world — London, LA, NY, Bangkok — and there is nowhere else where people are such lovers of pleasure. Food pleasure, music pleasure, late night pleasures, spontaneous costume pleasure, and the list goes on. But to me, what makes New Orleans unique in the world, is that we all love to share those pleasures with each other.
Favorite restaurant Whoever has the saltiest oysters at the moment. I love raw oysters Favorite museum The National WWII Museum always touches me in a personal way. The new Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience is amazing. Both of my grandfathers' lives are depicted there. It's a place to go with family
Favorite walk Down Esplanade to City Park. The pace of it is slow and shaded by oak trees. What's not to like? Favorite simple indulgence Wine. I like to drink it, talk about it, and learn about it. It never bores me Currently watching Peaky Blinders and Rick and Morty

MARIAH WALTON BENCIK ALGIERS OWNER & CURATOR West London Boutique
Describe what you love about what you do. When people come out of the fitting room and start spinning and dancing in my clothes, it actually makes me slightly weep. It's also such an honor when visitors come into West London and compliment us on the collection. Hearing "I love your clothes" or "you have a great shop" makes me smile big. Why in New Orleans? I landed here by happenstance and now I can't see myself anywhere else. I've been very well received here in this magical place and New Orleanians' support is like no other. It's contagious.
Favorite restaurant Gris-Gris Favorite meal and where to get it The octopus at Saba when it's on the menu Favorite thing to do here to relax Staycation at Terrell House Bed and Breakfast Favorite destination London, of course Your go-to outfit A good t-shirt, jeans, and a fabulous blazer First thing you do when you wake up Pray
Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. Crawfish. It's Southern, messy, a learned art, and delicious. It's a delicacy best enjoyed amongst friends and family; it's confirmation that you're in the South. Describe your personal style in three words. Feminine, romantic, dramatic

Describe what you love about what you do. I don't have a job! I have a mission! I wake up every morning and pour my God-given talents and passions into making an impact. I push myself to be the person I needed when I was a student at St. Augustine High School. Describe what you see as our future. I would like for the people of New Orleans to see that the word "community" represents commerce + unity. If the two truly came together through us as citizens, we can build an illuminating future together.
AULSTON G. TAYLOR TREME
PRESIDENT & CEO St. Augustine High School
What would people be surprised to know about you? I jumped out of a plane at heights of 10,000 feet on Long Island, and I've also gone 60 feet below on the island of Roatán, Honduras. What amazing feelings both were. All fears broken from that point on. Spending time with Fr. Matthew J. O'Rourke S.S.J. during the last five years of his life with us on Earth. He was St. Augustine's first principal in 1951 and its first president in 1987. The "Chief" is what we called him. MAGGIE KOERNER MIDCITY MUSICIAN & SONGWRITER
Louisiana is home. I was born and raised in Shreveport, but New Orleans is where my heart and soul feel most nurtured. I just lived a year in Austin during the pandemic and I now know what it means to miss New Orleans. What advice would you give your twenty-year-old self? You were right at 20: you can't drink alcohol. Life's more fun without it, believe it or not. Find a good hair stylist and a good therapist, but they can't be the same person.

Describe what you love about what you do. I love making photographs that I thought were for me and discovering they are also a gift for other people. Why in New Orleans? New Orleans because in the perfect randomness of life, I was born here. It's special, have you seen this place? Have you seen another place like it on a visual, cultural, geographic, or other level? I know I am a bit biased. What about New Orleans inspires you? New Orleans is like a book that you can read over and over and when you get really tired of it and you think "I never want to read that book again," it hits you with something you didn't comprehend the first 40 times.

Describe what you love about what you do. The human connection I make with the people I dress. My job is about making people feel confident. Being a stylist is a little like being a personal cheerleader: hyping people up, getting them feeling comfortable, and camera-ready. Dressing someone can feel quite intimate, so it's all about gaining trust and creating a connection. Why in New Orleans? Because I wasn't sure it could be done. When I first moved here from London, I was fully prepared to pivot professions, but I've chipped away at making it work for me. I've found New Orleans to be a very welcoming, accommodating place. What about New Orleans inspires you? Everything. The people, the architecture, the humidity, and the scenery. There is nowhere like it. Describe what you see as our future. I'd like to see a further concentration on cultural preservation. This city is too special to end up like everywhere else. Describe your charitable work or favorite causes. I've been a volunteer with UNITY of Greater New Orleans since moving to the city. They're a nonprofit coordinating community partnerships to end homelessness.

Describe what you love about what you do. As a childhood cancer survivor, it's rewarding to work for an organization that hits so close to home. It's fulfilling to help others navigate the unchartered and daunting territory that is a cancer diagnosis. Whether I'm educating others about our patient services or groundbreaking research, being a resource to those in need is near and dear to my heart. Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. The joie de vivre. Just as it was referenced in the infamous Chris Rose quote after Hurricane Katrina, "We dance even if there's no radio." Describe your charitable work or favorite causes. I'm a little biased. It's extremely rewarding to see people making my recipes outside of the "classroom" knowing they come back to them again and again. It's the ultimate compliment. Why in New Orleans? From the team at Urban to the folks behind our world class food scene to the entrepreneurs out there starting businesses, the people of this city never cease to energize me. Why in New Orleans? I chose to live in New Orleans because there is no other place with the soul that resides in this city. It's in the music, the heat, the river, the art, the food, and the people. I find it difficult to visit a place for too long where the culture just isn't as rich. What about New Orleans inspires you? This is a city with many opportunities, but what really inspires me is the set of challenges that come with the city. ARIEL WILSON-HARRIS MARIGNY COMMUNICATIONS & CREATIVE STRATEGY
Describe what you love about what you do. I love that I am able to use my creativity in everything I do. Whether it is developing a campaign to spread awareness, rebranding an organization, or planning a unique event experience, I am a creative strategist at heart. The reward is when someone shares something they saw or heard about with me and had no idea that I produced it. Internally, I get so excited because it's rewarding to know that my talent is shining through in New Orleans and beyond. What about New Orleans inspires you? The culture bearers. The city is known for its culture, however those same people, particularly from the Black community, barely see the financial benefits of that. I am inspired by those folks because no matter how resilient they are, they deserve to be healthy and wealthy. I am inspired to shed light on them and the Black underserved community in this city through my work and advocacy efforts. There is a pool of Black genius here that is a force to be reckoned with. What advice would you give your twenty-year-old self? It is not denial, it is delay. It is not a loss, it is a catalyst for something greater. It is not a weakness, it is an opportunity for growth. You deserve wealth, prosperity, and happiness. Take up all the space! Describe your charitable work or favorite causes. I am the president and founder of The Orchid Society, a nonprofit that mentors young African American girls from underserved communities. My "why" is when one of our "orchid bud" mentees gets scholarships to four HBCUs. My "why" is when a mentee says, "I had no one else to call, so I called you." My "why" is when a mentee shares they had never traveled outside of the country until she joined. It is critical that Black girls see powerhouse female leaders in professional industries that look like them and be encouraged to take on the world in their beautiful, unapologetically Black skin! To see them shy when they enter the program and fearless when they get to college is everything for me!
