FROM THE EDITOR

I love working on the A-List issue because I get to know amazing fellow New Orleanians in an up close and personal way. Their responses to our interview questions give me so many things to think about and more than a few make me laugh out loud. Most of all, I find inspiration in their ability to reimagine and envision pathways to a better and stronger city for us all. This year, several ideas were consistent among all of our A-Listers – the need for improved educational opportunities, both in academics and in the trades that support our economical ecosystem, the importance of preserving our unique culture and traditions, and the need to truly focus on our infrastructure so that our community remains viable for future generations. I couldn't agree more. I am optimistic that with our collective tenacity, compassion, and brainpower, we can harness our energy and capabilities for the greatest good. As we celebrate our food, music, architecture, and heritage, let's also focus on our resilience and creativity so that New Orleans can be all that it can be – now and in the many years to come.

THINGS WE ADORE

Support the pups of South Louisiana during this year's NOLA Dogs Race to the Rescue 5K. Enjoy a run or walk (at your own pace, of course) on Sunday, October 16 at Heaven's Pets at Lake Lawn. All proceeds from the event will be used to provide immediate care to dogs – many of which are heartworm positive. Can't make the race? Check out the exciting online auction! nolagirl.org

New Orleanians are invited to visit The Helis Foundation John Scott Center, the new 6,000-square-foot vibrant space located in the city's arts district. The colorful new center is home to 51 of John T. Scott's vivid works and will serve as an interactive community hub of exhibits, programs, and experiences. leh.org

WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO When I'm performing on stages, I love the process and skill of mixing live, which you have to do by ear when using vinyl. When I'm doing my "Soul Power" show on WWOZ FM, I love sharing music that makes me feel good and makes listeners feel good. When I'm lecturing about music or teaching my class, I love educating people about topics that may be new to them. WHAT ABOUT NEW ORLEANS INSPIRES YOU? The fact that New Orleanians care about our history, our people, and the things that make us unique from everywhere else. SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW I'm pretty shy, but not as painfully shy as I used to be. FAVORITE MUSEUM Treme's Petit Jazz Museum FAVORITE NEW BUSINESS Baldwin & Co. FAVORITE THING TO DO HERE TO RELAX Record shopping FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME Music Is the Message by Kool & The Gang ADVICE TO YOUR TWENTY-YEAR OLD SELF My 20-year-old self was ahead of the game, so I'd tell her to continue making your own lane and doing your own thing.

WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO I'm fascinated by the alchemy of color and how certain combinations can change the way you feel in a room on a visceral level. WHY NEW ORLEANS? There's a close relationship in New Orleans to the fact that life is ephemeral as well as an understanding that creative expression is innate for all humans. No one knows how much time they have left. And so, do we live life in full color, dance, and play music in the streets? Absolutely. GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE In a world that loves to tell women that they can't, I grew up with a father and brother who defied that notion. WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO I wake up and have fun every day. One day I may be jumping into a helicopter for an aerial photoshoot, another day filming in a cooking school commercial, and then the next, lighting a dumpster on fire. WHY NEW ORLEANS? It's my second time living here. I left and immediately found out that there's no other place like it. It's the people that make it special. WHAT ABOUT NEW ORLEANS INSPIRES YOU? The color. The heat. WHAT ABOUT NEW ORLEANS INSPIRES YOU? New Orleans is such a wonderful city, but she's a bit of a fixer-upper. I am dedicated to nourishing our children, and in turn, hopefully making a smarter, healthier future for us all. SOMETHING ABOUT NEW ORLEANS THAT PUTS YOU IN A GOOD MOOD The vibe on the street! The city just hums. WHAT YOU SEE AS OUR FUTURE I am hopeful that New Orleans will be a safer place to live. In order to do that, we need to shake the foundation of our city's infrastructure — get to work on really making sustainable changes to the education system and providing equal opportunities for all. WHY NEW ORLEANS? It's the top city for destination weddings and events. Each experience is unique in a city so rich in culture, history, amazing food, and music. There's nowhere else like it anywhere in the world. WHAT ABOUT NEW ORLEANS INSPIRES YOU? The people who are so kind, so Southern, so loving, and oh so welcoming. WHAT YOU SEE AS OUR FUTURE I grew up with neighborhoods of families all living in walking distance from each other. I would love to see more local families — the people who built these neighborhoods — still residing here. The spirit of New Orleans is the locals and we must preserve that. WEDDINGS WE ADORE Lauren & James By M i cha e l a B e chl e r | Photos by E m i ly Song e r L auren Mavrinac and James Singleton's relationship started as a friendship while they both attended the University of Oklahoma. After four years of dating, they knew that New Orleans – a place known for fun that both of their families love and have in common – would be the perfect place for their nuptials. "The church was a really big deal for me," explains Lauren. "My family has so many connections to Our Lady of the Lake, so we centered everything around the church." The duo lives in Colorado where Lauren is a business student and James is a United States Space Force Satellite Operator. While planning a wedding from afar wasn't always ideal, the bride made it work with trips to her hometown of Houston and New Orleans throughout the

engagement to finalize details. "My favorite part about being engaged and the planning process was how excited James was to be a part of everything. I feel like you expect most fiancés to take a back seat and just let the bride do everything, but I loved that he wanted to be involved." Part of the prep was finding the right dress. Not only did Lauren pick "the one" during her first appointment, but it fit perfectly, and she went home with it that day. The couple wanted to keep their wedding party intimate, but Lauren knew she wanted a "squad" of flower girls by her side. Her three nieces and James' cousin were thrilled to be included and took their duties very seriously, including putting in a request to wear high heels. "It was hysterical because even I wasn't thrilled about wearing heels, but we
