M aybe it's the spectacular weather we've had these past weeks, or the fact that we are having Jazz Fest, or maybe it's the exuberant performance and Grammy wins for New Orleanian Jon Batiste, but I can't help but feel a pep in my step and a renewed sense of energy. Creativity and talent is all around us, and it's beyond uplifting and invigorating. In this issue, we shine the light on some of the creatives that make our community so vibrant. I hope you enjoy meeting these artists, creators, and entrepreneurs. Just reading about their diverse backgrounds and expertise motivates me to want to venture out this season to revel in all the city has to offer. As we head towards May, we have so much to look forward to — parties and weddings, Mother's Day and graduations, first dips into the swimming pool, and hopefully lots of travel. It's time for the annual house refresh and Spring cleaning, a change in wardrobe, and plans for hitting the beach or taking a much needed vacation. B orn and raised in Lafayette, Paige moved to New Orleans to attend the University of New Orleans where she majored in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Public Health. While in school, she explored her artistic side through her jewelry business. Firebird Wearables began from a single pair of earrings made as a gift for her best friend and since its expansion, has become a form of expression shared with a larger audience. Her sustainable and colorful earrings can be manipulated into new shapes, feature upcycled threads and yarns, and can be found in shops across New Orleans. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? Opportunity, exploration, and the desire for connection. After graduating and transitioning into full time work, I have found it difficult to make time to create. Reminiscing on the friendships I have made through creating jewelry, wanting to get back to contributing to that space, and challenging myself to try something new with my earrings has encouraged me to reconnect with my artwork. WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? My art practice is not consistent, so part of my process is to allow it to come and go. When I am inspired, it comes from a genuine place, rather than being forced or coerced. When making earrings, I'll usually look at colors as a way to get into the headspace of creating. Otherwise, it's generally a fluid and highly intuitive process. All of the styles of earrings I have created were made in the moment by playing with the material as opposed to having a formal and formulaic design process. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR TAKING CREATIVE RISKS? Reframe your thinking. Approach creative opportunities as exploration and with curiosity. Ask yourself what you can learn from this instance and how can you apply the outcome to help further your craft.

FAVORITE PART ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS? Celebration of life. Regardless of the times, I find that the way people show up in this city and find moments of joy is the best part. FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN NEW ORLEANS? 1000 Figs — The food is absolutely delicious. Eating it while hanging outside on the bayou is ideal. FAVORITE QUOTE? A nne attended the Lafayette Parish High School Arts Academy and studied Fine Arts Painting at Pratt Institute in New York. With a long fascination with our subtropical ecology and urban landscape, her works celebrate the beauty of living with the natural features of the Mississippi River and the urban modifications that impact the surrounding swamplands. Using unique layering techniques, her abstract acrylic paintings explore regional aerial topography and various New Orleans ecosystems. Through art, she captures the ever-shifting and dramatic significance that the river has for the people of New Orleans. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? I am inspired by climate change and specifically the changing landscape of Louisiana. Coastal erosion, flooding, and extreme weather are top of mind right now in the work that I create. I am thinking a lot about the future and what that will look like in New Orleans. WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? It's really important to me to do creative things just for the sake of doing them— such as going all out on creating a homemade Mardi Gras costume or hand making all the decorations for a party. A few things I've made for parties include a 10' x 10' Statue of Liberty head and full size cardboard Iron Throne. When you make your living from art, you can fall into the trap of monetizing everything you create, but I think it's really important to make crazy things for fun. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR TAKING CREATIVE RISKS? Early on, I was so stumped by what I should make. I had a lot of schooling in my head about what I'm "supposed" to be making. I found that if I became obsessed with an idea I needed to follow it. Your art should be interesting to you and should be fun to make (at least most of the time). Follow that. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? As a child all I ever cared about was making things. Turns out I never had to stop.

FAVORITE PART ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS? The creativity. People express themselves in a very special way here, particularly during Mardi Gras. My favorite thing is seeing homemade costumes and floats in the walking parades. There is a special homemade ingenuity on display that I don't see anywhere else in the country. FAVORITE QUOTE? "Over and over in the butterfly we see the idea of transcendence. In the forest we see not the inert but the aspiring. In water that departs forever and forever returns, we experience eternity." C hristian is a first-generation Vietnamese- American ceramic artist currently pursuing a MFA in Studio Arts at Tulane University. His work celebrates Vietnamese-American identity and redirects stigma by confronting racism, stereotypes, and underrepresentation. His most recent series, Nail Salon, focuses on the Vietnamese culture that developed in the United States subsequent to the Vietnam War and the resiliency of this community throughout the country. The porcelain pieces, especially the display hands, signify the idea of a translator in the way that non-English speaking workers successfully rely on visual representation to communicate. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? The surprise of opening a kiln. You just never know exactly what the results will be. Most of the time there are failures, but when something finally works out, it's such a great feeling. FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN NEW ORLEANS? Lilly's Café. I've eaten Vietnamese food my entire life, but there is something about Lilly's food that is so unique. FAVORITE QUOTE? "You're always someone you are capable of being. When they say you make chandeliers, then you are a chandelier maker." Ai Weiwei

WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? My work stems from personal experience. For this project, I explored Vietnamese-American culture by reflecting on my upbringing. I'd call my family to share stories or get recipes from my grandmother, and these conversations shaped ideas for the work. Gaining insight about my culture from a more personal space feels like a very natural and meaningful way to draw ideas. HOW DID THE PANDEMIC INFLUENCE AND AFFECT YOUR CREATIVITY? I was accepted into the MFA program at Tulane University, and I had the time and space to create artwork. At that time, Asian hate crimes were happening across the country. I thought that if I was going to make art, it was important to me that it gave representation to Vietnamese-Americans and the Asian-American society as a whole. Throughout the pandemic, I've been working on my Nail Salon series, which focuses on the success of our culture especially in the nail salon industry. FAVORITE MUSEUM IN NEW ORLEANS? The Ogden is inclusive to many different identities that are a part of Southern culture, but have not historically been recognized as so. They're expanding the conversation about what constitutes the South and Southern Art.

A fter a decade of studying and working in forensic psychology, Kelsey took a "sabbatical" from her Ph.D. program and never looked back. She always had an interest in design, so she bought a vintage sewing machine, and with a lot of work, perseverance, and support, Fringe and Company was born out of her apartment five years ago. FAVORITE PART ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS? This list is a mile long, but I've never lived in a city that looks at someone walking down the street in head-to-toe sparkles on a Tuesday afternoon and rather than thinking "that person is a little crazy" you immediately think "where are they going and how can I join?" The sense of community, excitement, and celebration is unparalleled, and those of us who have felt an ounce of the magic that New Orleans has to offer are eternally indebted.

FAVORITE QUOTE? "Life is too short not to sparkle."

BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN YOUR WORK? I truly can find inspiration in anything. Give me a beat- up old T-shirt to customize? Inspired. Give me a bolt of sequin fabric? Inspired. At a museum and falling in love with the color story of a painting? Inspired. Walking my dog and finding the most gorgeous blooming bush? Inspired. By nature, I am the most curious human being, so I find aspects of most things fascinating. HOW DID THE PANDEMIC INFLUENCE AND AFFECT YOUR CREATIVITY? I actually took on my studio space during the pandemic — it gave me a creative space outside of my house to fill with ideas and sparkles. It is so hard to work on dream projects when you are in the weeds and going from one thing to the next. The pandemic forced me to slow down which led to some of my best creative and business decisions. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR TAKING CREATIVE RISKS? Taking risks is really scary, and it doesn't get any less scary, the risks just change. What I've found is the things I was scared of a year ago are nowhere near the things I am scared of right now. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable and just know this too will pass. And then you'll be faced with another even scarier risk but with a little more confidence knowing you overcame the last one. FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A SUNDAY AFTERNOON? Walking around the bayou with my fiancé Liz and our dog Tripp. Grabbing a po-boy and listening to music with friends outside. Slow Sunday afternoons in Nola are truly magical.

F ranky is a classically trained dancer and multidisciplinary performance artist who has participated in several cabaret and dance troupes. His Haitian heritage plays a key role in his art, and he often focuses on deconstructing the idea of what it means to be Black and Queer in the South. He has performed in large-scale circus shows around the country, is currently a member of the New Orleans Museum of Art's Creative Assembly Cohort, and appeared in the documentary film To Decadence with Love, Thanks for Everything. WHY NEW ORLEANS? I believe that New Orleans is one of the last original cities. When I think about how other cities are all starting to look and feel the same, New Orleans has its own heartbeat and spirit. I can't think of anywhere else I can wake up on a Saturday morning and hear an impromptu jazz band practicing down my street. I can't think of a better place to call home.

FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? In a world where we're conditioned to follow a "step-by-step" playbook on what it means to be successful, creating art gives you the ability to define what success means on your own terms. WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? I cherish moments of silence, where ideas can flow freely. Taking care of my mind and body is an important aspect to nurturing my art, so I make sure to stay hydrated, stretch daily, and journal any new ideas that come to me. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR TAKING CREATIVE RISKS? We're taught at an early age to play it safe, but life is meant to be exhilarating and unpredictable, so you might as well lean in! With great risks come great rewards. If you're patient and have faith in your abilities, every risk will be worth it. BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN YOUR WORK? My grandma, who was the epitome of love and kindness.

G rowing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sara credits her mother for her early adoration of nature, color, and pattern as well as her rich appreciation for simple abundance. Her one-of-a-kind style — influenced by her Salvadoran heritage and Latin American travels — can be found in arrangements big and small at weddings and events across New Orleans. The best part is that I get to do it with my husband, Trevor Mark. We got married young and moved to New Orleans our first year. Haven't left since. FAVORITE QUOTE? My parents would say, "Tómalo un dia a la vez." You take one day at a time.

WHY NEW ORLEANS? Have you been to New Orleans? She's a magical city that will take you by the hand. I can go on about the music, the food, and the community here. Nine years ago, we moved during the last week of April and some friends took us to Jazz Fest that weekend. It was a good "Welcome to New Orleans" moment. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? I love that I get to work with my hands. I get to work with colors, tones, and natural ingredients. I'm thankful for that. WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? I've been running a lot more lately which brings movement and fresh oxygen to my mind. It's been fun seeing different parts of the city. BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN YOUR WORK? The lush greenery and blooms in New Orleans. This city is gorgeous. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR TAKING CREATIVE RISKS? Do it. Go with your gut. Educate yourself in your field and become a professional. We are always learning and growing.

D espite growing up in New York with artists for parents and minoring in Studio Art at Washington and Lee University, it wasn't until Tani lived in New Orleans that she began to embrace her artistic side. After working in D.C. as an event and brand marketer and moving here to continue working in the events world, she began to cultivate painting as more than a hobby during the pandemic. Inspired by her collection of restaurant matchboxes, her custom watercolors commemorate milestone moments while telling a story that is unique and personal to each client. FAVORITE MUSEUM IN NEW ORLEANS? Growing up, I spent a lot of time at historic sites and living museums with my family, and my favorite part was always seeing old shops and the various products people used. The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum gives me that same feeling. FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A SUNDAY AFTERNOON? I love going to the grocery store and will spend an hour walking up and down the aisles. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? People's memories and experiences are the driving force behind painting matchbooks. I love when someone reaches out and shares the story of how they met their partner or where they got engaged. Being able to put onto paper a representation of a memory or feeling is incredibly empowering and gives meaning to what I do. HOW DID THE PANDEMIC INFLUENCE AND AFFECT YOUR CREATIVITY? The pandemic is exactly what I needed to kickstart my creativity. Having the time to explore the new city I lived in, gain a new appreciation for everything within my own home, and sit down and dive into a beloved hobby of mine that I haven't had the time to enjoy for years was incredible. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR TAKING CREATIVE RISKS? I think it's important to just find something that interests you. If that becomes the subject matter or inspiration behind your creativity, then you will never run out of inspiration and ideas and hopefully, what you put on paper will come naturally. I don't think it's about taking risks necessarily but making sure you are passionate about the subject enough to execute it how you want without the advice, thoughts, and meddling of others.

After working for several high-end men's runway and luxury clothing designers, he founded his own company that specializes in fine custom tailoring and bespoke suiting. He has written extensively on the subject of dandyism and men's fashion in his own books We Are Dandy and I am Dandy as well as in articles seen in The New York Times , Rolling Stone , and Harper's Bazaar . He is currently ensconced in a French Quarter dwelling while at work on his next book — a historical biography set in Civil War New Orleans. WHY NEW ORLEANS? After my wife finished her nursing degree at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, we decided we desperately needed to move somewhere with a vibrant street culture, nice architecture, lots of greenery, and a knowledge of spices that goes beyond Old Bay Seasoning. WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? I take lots of walks. It's something New Yorkers are quite used to and from the French Quarter I can walk to the End of the World or the Ogden Museum in under an hour. In a verdant city with beautiful architecture and eccentric, attractive, and stylish people, there's no shortage of inspiration. HOW DID THE PANDEMIC INFLUENCE AND AFFECT YOUR CREATIVITY? I rethought the kinds of suits I wanted to be making and the kind of clients I wanted to court. We all had a great reckoning with mortality and the abundant feeling of life's-too-short-ism made me more determined that the things I leave behind me should be beautiful ones. I hope when vintage nerds 50 years from now find a Natty Adams tag at an estate sale they feel like they've found a treasure. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? At the moment my biggest aesthetic inspirations are sexy Helmut Newton photographs, old Mediterranean men in rumpled linen suits, and the music of The Wedding Present.

BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN YOUR WORK? My clients are my biggest inspiration, because I feel like each one is a co-designer on their unique garment. Other than that, architecture remains my biggest inspiration, along with the decorative or applied arts. As much as I take inspiration from all visual arts (and get creatively turned on by music), I always find my greatest inspiration in works of art that are made for living — buildings, ceramics, glassware, furniture, and jewelry. Cooking has taken Ana to celebrated restaurants in New York, India, Europe, and finally to New Orleans where she worked at Coquette before opening Lengua Madre. His vibrant portraits of Mardi Gras Indians and candid shots of children dancing in the street perfectly capture the joyful moments found in everyday life in the city. Since 2017, Jamell has captured the people and details that make these cultural events uniquely New Orleans and is currently feeling inspired by their return after the pandemic-induced hiatus. FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN NEW ORLEANS? Sneaky Pickle/Bar Brine in the Bywater. They offer vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as quality meat all from local sources. I worked for this restaurant for three years and watched Chef Ben Tabor open his doors to the neighborhood kids and teach them skills of the trade. They have a super humble attitude and are an asset to the neighborhood. FAVORITE QUOTE? "Be present." I find that when I'm immersed in the moment, whether I'm working or relaxing, I can make intentional decisions.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? I connect with people. Building relationships is a big part of what I do — it comes so naturally to me because I'm from here. When I'm at a second line, I'm working and capturing Black culture, but I'm also dancing and having a good time with my friends. I truly believe that photos are the result of making a connection by making my subject feel completely comfortable in front of the camera. BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN YOUR WORK? Watching the kids take pride in the culture gives me hope. Every week at the second line, these kids are dancing their little hearts out. They see their family and friends doing it, so they want to take part in it too. Some of these kids are dancing before they can even walk. FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A SUNDAY AFTERNOON? The perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon is at a second line, hands down. It's the perfect combination of working and enjoying myself. The social clubs are there to parade, the bands are there to show you why they're the best, and you're surrounded by vendors that will keep you fed and hydrated. FAVORITE MUSEUM IN NEW ORLEANS? Some of my favorite places to view art are Studio Be and JamNola. I like modern, punchy, colorful, and textured art. Ogden Museum and Contemporary Arts Center are really good too.

W hile Catherine is from New Orleans and Collin is "of" New Orleans (she graduated from Tulane), the founders of Where y'Art Works found their way back to the city after years away. Following a chance meeting, they formed their platform for local artists in 2013 and combined their unique experiences and skills to support and elevate these creatives. What began as an online shopping tool has evolved into a full-service art consulting company, connecting organizations, individuals, and local artists in communities across the country while continuing to preserve and further the culture of New Orleans. WHY NEW ORLEANS? Collin: After living abroad and traveling to different parts of the world, I realized that many of the things I loved about those places are things that reminded me of New Orleans. The creative culture here allows me to be perfectly who I am and be accepted here for all the facets of my personal and professional life. Protecting the culture of New Orleans is tied directly to protecting the culture that has given me so much. Catherine: New Orleans is home. I've left New Orleans twice and found my way back both times. There's a magnetic draw to this city. It appeals to the dark and light in all of us. The cycle of life constantly swings from one extreme to the other. Living in New Orleans means understanding this. BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN YOUR WORK? Collin: Getting to know the 200 or so artists that we work with has been the most inspiring part of starting this business. Artists are such interesting people and getting to understand their creative process, inspirations, and personalities is incredibly rewarding. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? Catherine: Working with an amazing team of women, talented artists, and community-driven organizations that believe local art has the power to improve lives, enrich culture, and create a more inclusive place for all.

FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A SUNDAY AFTERNOON? Collin: Anything outdoors. Crawfish boils, festivals, porch concerts, oysters on a patio, and pool days all make the list. Catherine: Sunday is all about the reset. Binge watching movies, bubble baths, and time on the sofa snuggling with my dog.

After a few years of dancing professionally, she pivoted to the culinary arts when she was accepted to the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone. D ana, a Louisiana native, earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is a painter, sculptor, and scenic artist working in the Mardi Gras float-building and film industries. Her portfolio includes everything from carnival floats to detailed murals to set construction and large scale sculptures for episodic television and major motion pictures. In addition, she offers custom carnival flowers and costumes for private collectors and enthusiasts through her studio, Mardi Gras Customs. WHY NEW ORLEANS? New Orleans possesses a creative spirit that is unparalleled, and there's no better example of that than the way we celebrate Mardi Gras. It's one huge, multi-faceted creative ritual, and the joy is palpable. As an artist, there's so much to feel inspired by. WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? I try to start every day with coffee and 10 minutes of quiet. It may not sound like much, but great ideas can happen in those precious minutes before my kids wake up and the work day begins. BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN YOUR WORK? As a visual artist working in the Mardi Gras industry, I acknowledge that I'm a very small part of an enormous tableau. I'm constantly in awe of the artistic collaboration of the way that the floats, costumes, bands, dance troops, and spectators all converge in one massive celebration. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? In the post-Mardi Gras months, I gather inspiration from the flowers I see in bloom on my walks throughout the city. It's a period of rest and reflection for me; I do most of my flower designs and templates in the spring. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR TAKING CREATIVE RISKS? Recognize that "failure" is a part of the creative process. The beauty of new, risky projects is what you learn, even if things don't pan out the way you envisioned.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR TAKING CREATIVE RISKS? Ask for the support to be creative. In my current role, I have one of the best positions I have ever had. I am a part of an amazing leadership team that gives me the freedom to be as creative as I can be. It is so empowering to have the approval to try something different. WHY NEW ORLEANS? New Orleans is a city that directly focuses on food and music. There are so many "foodies" that come to visit every single day. WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? Before the pandemic, I would travel to Europe every year. I would get lost in the major cities and eat at high end restaurants that really developed inspiration. Lately, I've turned to Instagram to observe fellow chefs that are doing some really cool things. I'm so thankful we've been connected through social media to learn from each other during these last couple of years. HOW DID THE PANDEMIC INFLUENCE AND AFFECT YOUR CREATIVITY? The pandemic influenced me to think more outside of the box and become even more creative. Some may think that it would have been the opposite and that chefs would have a more "homey" approach to cooking. But in my mind, the home cooks became pretty big experts during the pandemic — challenging their own creativity.
