FROM THE EDITOR

I love working on the kid's issue. It's so much fun to look at the world through their wide eyes filled with wonder and endless imagination. To follow are pages of fantastic books, creative art supplies, and magical toys that are sure to encourage budding artists, talented tykes, and future great thinkers. As students head back to school, they'll be outfitted with lunch bags, backpacks, and all of the gear that makes the first day all the more exciting. With the last weeks of summer fading away, I can't wait for the change of season, although for me, it is more back to work than back to play. I hope you enjoy the four bedrooms that are highlighted this month. I'm one of those peeps who collects beautiful paint colors like some people collect stamps, and I'm definitely adding the illuminating hues found in Iris and Jay Lapeyre's rooms to my stash. Most of all, I was so happy to see the focus on furniture and art in children's rooms that are meant to last. The joke in my family is that if we'd tagged the things we pass down and around, much like whales or birds, we could tell quite an amazing story. For me, this is what truly makes a home a home.

I n a light-filled Craftsman home in the Fontainebleau neighborhood, designer Whitney Wilkinson created a super joyful nest for Ayame and Carling Dinkler's young daughter, Ansley. "As she transitioned from her crib to a big kid's room, we envisioned a vibrant and magical space that felt gender neutral," Whitney explains. "This design will easily grow with her." The bunk beds that Whitney and Ayame designed became the starting point for the entire room's plan. The sleeping arrangement maximizes the vertical square footage under the vaulted ceiling while allowing for ample floor space for creative play. The clever installation includes easily accessed open shelving and built-in cabinets which provide abundant storage opportunities. With the ceiling painted a luscious, clear blue — Lulworth by Farrow and Ball — and the bed's whimsical scalloped corners and airy curtaining, I can easily see Ansley setting sail in her bed-boat or reaching for the sky in her treehouse or even staging skits theatre-style. The stellar concept delivers the wow factor, and I love it when fun meets functional.

"The red and blue color combination was inspired by the bright red tea set," says Whitney. It's a classic and traditional palette that feels so fresh and modern with the block print wallpaper by Gaston Y Daniela, crisp red ribbon from Samuel & Sons on the Roman shades, and a bold abstract painting by Mary Singleton from the Claire Elizabeth Gallery. I love how Whitney mixes found and vintage pieces together such as the painted dresser from Nadeau on Magazine Street with the retro blue wall lights she uses throughout the room. And the layers of natural texture — a wool rug and throw, a leather pouf, and handmade baskets and bins — keep everything cozy and authentic. This design scheme is so well thought out with places for interactive play or to curl up with a book, lots of storage solutions to keep the clutter at bay, and an energetic color story that's just right for tiny tykes and little explorers. "I like a decorative mix of custom, found, and personal," says Whitney. "And for children, a mix of whimsical elements with more substantial pieces to grow with is what makes a room most inviting."

W hen Fran and Jeff Lorio fell in love with a Victorian gem in Uptown New Orleans, they turned to designer Penny Francis to create their daughter Vivian's new room. Penny worked with the Lorios on their previous home, so she knew just what should make the move from the nursery to the new bedroom and how to introduce design elements that would mature and grow with Vivian in the years ahead. The goal was that she loves the bedroom no matter her age, and the result is enchanting and elegant décor that strikes the perfect balance of whimsy and sophistication mixed with sentimental treasures that will certainly go the distance. "We knew we wanted a canopy bed, so we made that the starting point for the design," Penny explains. "This custom-made piece is fully upholstered, including the rails, in a high-performance ivory fabric." I love how the bed anchors the space with its dreamy scalloped detailing. And for a definitive statement of whimsical charm, Penny Mini Muses

chose an Anna French wallpaper with ethereal vines embellished with subtle metallic flourishes. This creates a perfect envelope for the rest of the feminine color scheme — pale grey, blush, and sage. Three sentimental pieces of furniture transitioned from the nursery: an intricately carved dresser, a rocker/glider recovered in a striped velvet that incorporates all the room's hues, and a vintage chest with mirror that once lived in Fran's childhood bedroom. Sporting a fresh coat of paint — custom mixed to work with the new palette — and a simple change of hardware, Fran's family heirloom looks quite swell in Vivian's new digs. Penny is known for deftly mixing patterns, textures, and finishes to achieve a layered and timeless look. A large scale floral for bedding, a tone on tone wool rug, an antique bench, and a contemporary lighting fixture all work together for a collected look that Vivian can tweak and update as her taste evolves. And one thing that she is sure to cherish forever is the shadow box of her baby Muses shoes that Fran bedazzled each year before her ride in the iconic parade. Vivian really wanted a unicorn, so we had one custom made that can hang on the wall. The sparkly metallic paint adds whimsy, but it's not permanent or critical to the overall design plan.

W hen Brett Lapeyre decorated her children's rooms in the spacious Victorian House on St. Charles Avenue that she shares with her husband, James, she knew that she wanted the look to be playful and fresh while introducing timeless furnishings and art that could grow with them into adulthood. For Iris, named after Brett's grandmother, she chose a yummy, delicate pink — Frosted Petal by Benjamin Moore — and for Jay, named after his father and nicknamed after his paternal grandfather, she selected Borrowed Light by Farrow and Ball. The side by side spaces look so beautiful together. Iris's big girl statement pieces are an iconic "Gerrie Bed" named after the late grande dame of New Orleans interior design, Gerrie Bremermann, and a fabulous lighting fixture from Scout Design Studio in Dallas. When Jay moves from his Crate & Barrel crib, it will be to a roomy Casita Dallas daybed with built-in storage and Sandra Jordan prima alpaca upholstery. An

Alexander Calder print sitting above the mantle and a George Dureau painting above the bed are two works of art that he will never outgrow. It doesn't get more sentimental than seeing things you loved and cherished as a child in your own baby daughter's room. Brett grew up with the whimsical suite of hand decorated furniture — a charming painted table, a chest of drawers covered in flowers, and a doll house complete with storybook shutters, window boxes, and gardens. Other sweet handcrafted touches include an "Iris" basket toted back from Jamaica and a Burton Designs ceramic bowl topped with pink posies from Hazelnut. In Jay's room, furry forest and jungle friends pop up in stuffed animals, toys, and colorful art from Hazelnut. It's adorable to watch these two little bffs play for hours in both rooms, and I can't wait to see how their classic décor matures with them over the years. And who knows? We may see Brett's childhood furniture appear again in future generations.
