W hat I love about weddings is that they celebrate hope and new beginnings. I love the leap of faith and everything that creates the space for love and endless possibilities. Each element in a wedding — a dress that says "yes, I'm doing this," fresh flowers bursting with energy, a cake that nourishes our belief in romance and dreams — I'm here for every last bit of it. Nothing is more life-affirming than gathering to witness a loved one commit to that new start while honoring all the love and support that got them to this point in the first place. In college, I worked for a top wedding planner who taught me that a wedding is not just about the bride and groom. It's about their community and the one they hope to build. Wise words I've never forgotten! The positivity of such an experience is unparalleled; no wonder we stop what we are doing and save that date. Choosing to get married in New Orleans brings automatic beauty, tradition, and history to the table. With venues ranging from small and intimate to formal and grand, there's a setting to suit every personality. Head to The Historic New Orleans Collection for a showstopping display of all things Mardi Gras. Making Mardi Gras takes visitors from the sprawling dens to dance rehearsals while highlighting 19th-century float artists, house-float creators, hand-painted coconuts, and the dazzling costumes. The exhibition is on view through May 8, 2022. hnoc.org

The New Orleans French Film Festival (March 11-17) celebrates its 25th anniversary and will showcase excellence in contemporary and classic francophone cinema at the Prytania Theatre. Each film will be screened with English subtitles and some of the screenings will be accompanied by live music. neworleansfilmsociety.org

On Wednesdays, enjoy free admission to NOMA (courtesy of The Helis Foundation) as well as weekly talks with artists, curators, and other special guests. These casual conversations take place at lunchtime and offer a closer look at the different works currently on display at the museum. noma.org

New Orleans artist Becky Fos was commissioned by Barq's to create artwork for this year's Mardi Gras campaign "Eat, Drink and be Mardi." W hen Jake Bottcher and Anju Mampilly got engaged in 2021 after two years of long- distance dating, they immediately knew that the wedding would be in New Orleans. "It's one of our favorite places — the energy, the people, the liveliness — and we wanted to share that with our family and friends," Anju explains. "I grew up in Lafayette and went to Tulane. I've always loved The Roosevelt at Christmas. It's perfect for a Winter wedding." For planning, they turned to Brooke Casey who gleaned what they wanted for their big day and brought that vision to life. "Thank goodness for Brooke! I'd just moved to a new city and had very little time. Brooke made every detail flow seamlessly." The weekend was filled with meaningful touches unique to both families. For the rehearsal dinner at Galerie de Galatoire, Anju wore the sari that her mother wore for her own wedding. The ceremony at Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church also incorporated traditions typically performed in Christian weddings in India — the tying of the Thali and the presentation of the Manthrakodi. As Jake and his brothers dressed, they honored their late

father by drinking a glass of his favorite scotch, Johnny Walker Blue, from a bottle that was gifted to him prior to his passing four years ago. He'd promised to only drink it on special occasions. Anju was radiant in a Julie Vino deconstructed lace gown embellished with lots of sparkle. "When my mom and I went dress shopping, I had a few styles in mind. But the bridal consultant asked me to try on something that had just arrived. It was the first dress I tried on and once she placed the veil on, I knew it was the one." She completed her look with custom-designed accessories from venerable jeweler Apranje in Bengaluru, India. Jake went with debonaire — a classic black tuxedo and a dashing white dinner jacket for the reception. And what a reception it was! Guests dined on Louisiana favorites — alligator fritters, roast beef and debris gravy, and late night Lucky Dogs. "After just the right amount of champagne, we hopped onstage with MoJEAUX and sang Callin' Baton Rouge to our guests." And just like that, Anju and Jake were off to their new hometown of Milwaukee with wedding memories to last a lifetime.

By M i cha e l a B e chl e r | Photos by Hannah P i ck l e ANNA & BAILEY I nspired by all things retro, Anna Kennedy and Bailey Rowe's intimate wedding was the perfect combination of quirky, glam, and fun. The couple met at LSU and began dating in 2015. After living in North Carolina for two years as Anna attended graduate school, they settled in Shreveport. Following their Christmas Eve engagement, they decided to wed in one of their favorite places, New Orleans. "We wanted to throw a great party, and by having it in New Orleans…it's guaranteed to be a party." Anna and Bailey wanted to keep their celebration small with plenty of indoor and outdoor space for their family and friends. They decided on Cavan by LeBlanc + Smith for its idyllic location on Magazine Street. (The beloved restaurant closed following Hurricane Ida and now operates exclusively as an event space.) For her dress, Anna recruited her friend Grace of Gretta Garments to create a short, dreamy frock. The finished design included vintage lace that was passed down from the designer's grandmother. "It was fun, unique, beautiful,

and so special to wear the art your friend created. I was so proud to be wearing her work and design." The dress also inspired the invitations – vintage postcards of New Orleans with the details handwritten by Bailey's mother – and the music. The couple hired Ann Glaviano, a local DJ, to take guests back in time with her set of vinyl records from 1957-1974. "The guests loved it, and I think it was refreshing to not hear Bruno Mars at a wedding." The wedding took place on October 30 and was officiated by Ranna Zahra McSwain of Let's Elope New Orleans. "Ranna wrote a ceremony that was tailored to us and just honestly beautiful. It was a modern take on what a marriage should be: a partnership founded in love." Anna walked down the aisle with her parents, and the couple exchanged bands that were made by the groom's uncle, Bailey's Jewelers in Bossier City. The reception followed with the front porch turning into a dance floor which some costumed crashers took as an open invitation. "It felt like we were outside partying along with everyone else on Halloween eve…it was hilarious and one of the moments that made me so happy to have our wedding in New Orleans." After dancing the night away, the couple rode off into marriage on decorated bikes.

T wo birthdays will always stand out to Dejah Cordier (née Causey). On her 21st, she met her future husband, Ronald Cordier, and four years later on her 25th, he proposed. After welcoming their daughter Kinlee into the world and building a home together, the couple was excited to embark on their next chapter. The pair decided on Maison Lafitte, a historic and spacious venue, in Mandeville as the setting for the big day. "We wanted to keep traditional New Orleans culture evident during our union, but we also desired a small, quaint wedding. Mandeville was the perfect happy medium." Equipped with visions of a bohemian wedding with pops of glam throughout, the bride-to-be began the busy but enjoyable planning process. One of the easiest decisions was the Blue by Enzoani "Milan" gown Dejah fell in love with at Linen Jolie Bridal in Metairie. "As a mom and a nurse, my day-to-day wardrobe consists of scrubs and leggings. It felt amazing to get all dolled up and see Ronald's reaction." She added sleeves, which were later removed for the reception, and her earthy bouquet by

Following a gloomy and muggy week, December 12 turned out to be a beautiful and sunny Sunday. Dejah got ready in the comfort of her home with her mother, her matron of honor and aunt, Kinlee, and her goddaughter, while the groom prepared with his brother turned best man at the new Four Seasons Hotel. The outdoor ceremony was officiated by Dejah's uncle and accompanied by the sounds of violinist Shaun Ward. "Exchanging vows to the person who you will spend the rest of your days with, in the presence of those nearest and dearest to you, is truly an emotional moment." After photos and mingling, Dejah and Ronald lived in the moment and enjoyed time on the dance floor with DJ Redd. A variety of fare was catered by The Lakehouse, and guests indulged in the white chocolate vanilla bean cakes filled with Swiss meringue buttercream. The evening concluded with a festive second line and a glittering sparkler exit.
