FROM THE EDITOR

A s I write this note, I am on a plane to Spain — my first trip out of the country since the beginning of the pandemic. It feels good to be traveling again. My college roommate and I decided on Madrid for our travel fix, because it seemed like a lot of bang for the buck for a manageable- sized destination oozing with history and culture. Hello, that sounds so much like New Orleans! No wonder people flock here, the most European city to visit in the States, for their own vacations and special occasions. In this issue, we shine the light on some of the things people see and love about our city — a dream wedding in a romantic setting, world class fine dining in a stunning hotel, and a second home away from home explicitly designed for creating a lifetime of memories in a town this unique. Sometimes it takes seeking out beautiful architecture on historic streets in a foreign country or enjoying authentic cuisine in time-honored restaurants of a faraway place to realize how amazing and restorative a visit to New Orleans is for so many people. I know I will be charmed by Madrid, but I'm also keenly aware of how lucky I am to call the Crescent City home.

I nterior designer Donna Maselli is known for comfortable elegance with a great respect for place and time. So when out-of-state clients called on her to oversee the renovation and decoration of a spacious Uptown home built in 1911, she jumped right in to create a high-functioning space that oozes with classic New Orleans patina and charm. The clients are two business partners and their young families that share a fondness for the Big Easy. As Donna explains, "These are two interesting families with active grandparents and friends from all over that love New Orleans. They wanted a second home that would be packed with fun and joy. The renovation happened over the pandemic, but now between Christmas, rolled into Mardi Gras, then Spring Break and now Jazz Fest…the house is seeing all of the nonstop activity that the owners envisioned." For the renovation, Donna collaborated with Jeff Hamilton, the founder of Hamilton Bros, who shares her passion for building and design. "The owners were highly sensitive to the history of the house, but also open to the many ideas we had for updating the floor plan to maximize how the rooms would function and flow. Jeff is an amazing talent. If I had an idea with a picture or a sketch on the proverbial napkin, he

could make it." The end result is a breathtaking refresh of a venerable old house that is poised to create a lifetime of memories for its new owners. The architectural details and the house's woodwork are standouts that truly sparkle in the custom white paint color that Donna has perfected over her career. The entire first floor — walls, ceilings, and millwork — is bathed in this dreamy shade that changes with the shadows and light throughout the day. There's a formal living room, resplendent with the original dropdead chandelier, plaster ceiling medallion, and pink marble fireplace, that is perfect for adults. A reworked family room, kitchen, and dining area provide multiple opportunities for gathering. I love how Donna pairs the super sunny Schumacher drapery and velvet sofa from Lulu and Georgia with pink pillows that pick up the fireplace hues and how she mixes formality with more casual elements which keep everything relaxed. A pair of handsome Italian commodes, a gilt mirror, and wood-carved armchairs from Karla Katz Antiques are nods to her love of balance and symmetry while a rugged

natural rope rug, burled wood coffee table from Crate & Barrel, and abstract patterned pillows deliver texture and a looser vibe. The La Cornue stove with a beautiful plaster hood anchors a dream kitchen complete with custom cabinetry, Vicostone counters, and an island surrounded with counter chairs from Serena and Lily. "My goal is to love your kitchen now and 30 years later," Donna explains. Well, what I love is the stunning hood that she and Jeff designed and built. "Neither of us had ever done one, but we wanted to and my clients were game. It's really like a sculpture for the space." Throughout the home, Donna establishes an "old New Orleans'' aesthetic through the use of color, decorative wallpapers, and mix of furnishings. "My clients wanted the décor to feel authentic to the city and neighborhood. The goal was to have it be a little bit swampy, to have some serious soul. That was right up my alley. We had so much fun finding swamp paintings, bamboo furniture, fabrics, and murals that

W e painted all of the woodwork a lucious white shade, but it was my intention from the jump to keep the pocket doors dark and varnish them up. I sent the clients pictures from the White House….you'll notice their woodwork is light, but the doors are dark. I think it's a deeply American style.

leaned into the locale." For a tiny powder room, she chose a French scenic paper from Ananbô and a murky green paint color to achieve a dramatic bayou effect. In a guest bedroom, she went with the aptly named paint color Alligator Green by Benjamin Moore and an upholstered bed in Banana Palm by The Inside. The upstairs landing with a fabulous settee from Karla Katz Antiques was covered in a hand painted landscape mural by Paul Montgomery that exudes old world drama and classical style. I love the European aesthetic of another one of the guest rooms — Farrow & Ball's Borrowed Light, a Swedish dresser, and fortuny pillows — and the floor-to-ceiling windows and canopy bed in the primary bedroom. All of the exquisite custom details, such as the plaster reproduction of the ceiling medallion in the family room and the new window for the spa-like primary bathroom, speak to the fabulous collaboration between designer and craftsmen. Preserving the original beauty of our stately old homes while updating them for modern living is something New Orleanians hold dear. Subtle things like Donna pulling colors for the downstairs palette from the stained glass window near the front entry are graceful choices that beckon and welcome new families to create their own stories for decades to come.

T he Grill Room, located inside the Windsor Court Hotel, is an illustrious respite from the bustling French Quarter and its nonstop revelry. The elegant yet comfortable restaurant, helmed by Executive Chef Igor Krichmar, offers a creative take on American cuisine with plenty of inspiration from New Orleans, while pulling back to its roots of what an English fine dining experience can be. "I am inspired by fine dining in modern American cuisine. We can do shrimp and grits, gumbo, and crawfish étouffée all day long and there are so many restaurants that do it amazingly well! But thinking outside of the box is what constantly inspires me." Chef Igor arrived at the Windsor Court last Fall equipped with significant experience from his years at esteemed hotels in Yountville, Los Angeles, Park City, and New York. He also came with dozens of beautiful plates from his personal collection ready to be used with the refreshed menu. "Since closet space is limited, my wife kindly asked

me to bring all of my plates into work and start using them more instead of them collecting dust," he recalled. "I have about 60 to 70 pieces in total ranging from Hering Berlin porcelain to Fürstenberg. The plates and serving pieces traveled quite nicely with me, even though I did have some small breakage along the way." Seasonal ingredients are key to Chef's dynamic and thoughtful menu that changes with the weather, and Spring's dishes emphasize au courant produce sourced from farms spanning from New Orleans to Ohio. The perfect example of this is the Spring Salad which includes unique vegetable and edible flowers paired with a local duck egg atop pumpernickel soil. The Summer Tart, presented on Rosenthal Fine Bone China, is savory and sweet with whipped Stracciatella cheese and fennel pollen, confit cherry tomatoes, avocado mousse, red ribbon sorrel, and baby heirloom snow peas. The Norwegian Halibut is another flavorful entrée served with a broccolini cream and shavings, roasted corn, compressed cucumbers, citrus oil, chai foam, and a squid ink tuile made from a Mold

Brothers silicone mold for garnish. "I've noticed that a lot of chefs nowadays are going back to using tuiles like they did in the 70s and 80s, but in a more elegant and modern way." The pièce de résistance, a 32 oz. Linz Heritage Bone-In Tomahawk Steak, arrives in style on a thick wooden slab. The hearty, shareable cut is served alongside Boursin mashed potatoes, pickled vegetables, and roasted mushrooms. Chef Igor also introduced new glassware and flatware to The Grill Room last year. After much research, he felt that Studio William's stainless-steel utensils appealed to the ambience and concept of the restaurant. "What's so special about our silverware is that it's very contemporary when faced the right way, but when you flip it over, you'll find a very ornate pattern on the opposite side. Our spoon is actually inlaid with 24k gold." The wine glasses from Gabriel Glas are an all-inclusive goblet for both white and red wine. "The design feels so elegant and fragile yet is dishwasher safe and actually durable. We do not like to

clutter the whole table with different glassware when we can have a universal option."

The second-story restaurant provides prime views of the hotel's courtyard when seated along the bay windows, while interior tables have a front row seat to distinctive artwork and murals of city scenes. R achel Bondy and Jordan Rummel met as teenagers while working as camp counselors in Fairfax, Virginia. "We had a whirlwind romance that Summer — everything you imagine that being young and in love for the first time would be,'' Rachel explains. Jordan then went to Boston for college while Rachel completed high school. "We wrote letters and visited one another as much as possible for two years, before deciding to experience college as singles when I headed to Tulane. It was a loving break up with each of us moving on to date other people and we grew a ton." By chance, their paths crossed again before Rachel's final year, and Jordan immediately applied for and landed a job here. When they decided to get married, "New Orleans was the only place that felt right. This is where we fell in love for the second time and started our lives as adults together." The authentic, relaxed vibe of Il Mercato was the perfect setting for the intimate ceremony and reception of their dreams. "We wanted the day to feel colorful and exuberant. The flowers by Antigua — utterly joyful, ringing in Spring — represented everything celebratory about being together after two years of the pandemic. I think my bouquet was the most beautiful in the world!" So was the cake by Bittersweet Confections, the signing of the Ketubah including artwork created by Jordan's mother, and the exchanging of vows they'd written themselves. "The signing of our Jewish marriage license was

more emotional than either of us expected. Our parents recited blessings; my dad wrote his own. I know it sounds cliché, but we were surrounded by love the entire day; it was palpable in every moment." All of the wedding details including Rachel's Aunt reading an Irish blessing during the ceremony in honor of her grandparents, their first dance to I2I from A Goofy Movie , and the 10 minute version of Taylor Swift's All Too Well with Swifties tearing up the dance floor embodied their 11 year history and all of the love that lifted them up as they started this brand new chapter. From a first date swing dancing as teenagers to second lining through the streets of New Orleans as adults, this is a love story as charming and heartwarming as our city.

W e loved being engaged. Fiancé is a fun word to use. It felt like another moment in our lives that put everything into perspective. Though we knew we'd spend forever together, it did feel different once we got engaged
