FROM THE EDITOR

O ctober brings cooler temperatures and fun seasonal activities. Football games, festivals, and all the spooky shenanigans that go along with Halloween — clever costumes, decorations, and parties — are in full force. New Orleans goes all out when it comes to pumpkins, gourds, and all things goulish. In this issue, we show you endless ways to dress the part and celebrate the season. Whether you are into Fall scents and accents or all things that go bump in the night, you'll find the necessary inspiration in these pages. I'm also excited to bring you our Design Issue with four beautiful renovations that I truly love. The photography captures the personalities of these architectural treasures, each with their own aesthetic and vibe. In each case, designers and builders maximize what already exists and solve space issues and restoration hurdles in savvy ways that bring spectacular results. Whether you are contemplating an entire renovation or simply looking for a new paint color to refresh a room or two, this is the issue for you. Here's to stunning tile, clever design, beautiful fabrics, and fabulous art!

E ntablature led the renovation and build of this house that had seen its share of revisions over the years. The homeowners wanted a more functional kitchen, a true primary suite, and a rear deck to improve the den to outdoor connection. As Chris Kornman, a third generation builder, explains, "This two-story house's top floor only went back half-way. To achieve our goals, we gutted the rear half of the house, including the kitchen, extended the square footage by adding onto the back, and added a full second story." The end result seamlessly links vibrant new rooms with older spaces, protecting the home's character while bringing it up to date. The architectural plans and kitchen design are by Jenny Zurik of MZ. Architecture and Design. Chris's advice is to put your contractor and architect together from day one. "Complexities are inherent in old houses and come up throughout the entire process, so professionals well versed in old houses in historic neighborhoods are great investments for an efficient and smooth renovation."

"We adhered to the philosophy that everything should have its place," says Jenny. "Even small kitchens, thoughtfully planned, can accommodate all the necessary tools and toys." The Bianco Marble island featuring waterfall sides paired with reclaimed pine floors, a sparkling tiled backsplash, and sleek Polar White cabinetry from Mattix Cabinets are as high-functioning as they are beautiful. The bathroom includes smart space planning and a large window to maximize luxurious natural light. Walls are painted Benjamin Moore's Swiss Coffee and cabinetry is Kabinart in Quicksilver with pure white Vicostone counters. The rear den addition is all about sunlight and happy hues. Paint color for the room was matched to the kitchen cabinetry and art by Alexandra Drake is a focal point. In the original living room and jewelbox of a powder room, the owner's personality and love for color shines. A Demond Matsuo painting hangs above a pair of custom benches and works by Holly Mabry Poole look fabulous behind a rich velvet sofa from Bernhardt topped with pillows in a punchy Scalamandré fabric.

I love the chic, uncluttered look of the new kitchen and bath.

As Jenny expressed so perfectly, "Every project is different and comes with its own parameters. We juggle the client's dreams with all of the dimensional requirements such as clearances, appliances, and minimum workspaces. Functionality is not optional while style directions are endless. The process is both linear and organic." A team with a deep knowledge of New Orleans architecture brings out the best in an old house — in this case a front porch was added to reflect how the original façade most likely looked at one time — and this is definitely a tribute to the love of historic renovation.

T his loving renovation of an 1860s cottage by Entablature and Logan Killen Interiors is beyond dreamy. The project included an addition to the rear of the house for a new primary suite and mudroom, as well as custom features added to all of the renovated existing spaces. In the hands of such talent, the home feels untouched by time, but functions well for a modern family. I love the en suite bedroom and bath. The designers explain that "the layout was determined by unique site conditions and circulation paths that dictated the shape and size of the new rooms." Solutions such as the dramatic doors opening to the bath make the narrow space feel wider and less hall-like. The Waterworks tub and hardware placed beneath a window, stunning Zio and Sons for Clé Tile, and tied-back curtains are atmospheric elements that create a sumptuous retreat. A pair of sinks sourced from Signature Hardware anchored with custom mirrors and wall lights from Urban Archaeology deliver that understated vintage inspired vibe that's timeless. Entablature built the doors and transom that opens from the bedroom to the mudroom, and the custom storage painted Lichen by Farrow & Ball

that flanks a well-worn bench. The intentional sightline from the bath to the bedroom to the mudroom to the verdant back yard is beautiful. The interior designers are known for their sublime use of color — those hard to define shades paired together in uncommon ways — and a cheerful mix of fabrics and accessories that look collected over time. In the dining room, a hutch painted Farrow & Ball's Bone was added to look as though it has always been there. Refinished floors and wainscoting are original to the house. For the living room, Entablature added crown molding and built bookshelves and a banquette. Walls are coated in Farrow & Ball's Cromarty which plays well with the Colefax and Fowler check featured on the sofa and shade, alongside all of the vintage finds and furnishings from the designer's Magazine Street store, Sunday Shop. It's a magical renovation and an example of what can happen when the contractor, architect, and designers are all involved from conception to finished plans to the final placement of beloved accessories.

D esigner Carleton Young was hired to develop the basic plans her client had for a renovation that would expand the kitchen, add a primary bath, and enclose the porch to create an entrance foyer. Carleton did all of the detailed construction drawings required and acted as the project manager for the entire process. From cabinet layouts to lighting and space planning to decisions on all finishes, appliances, and furnishings, she had the end goal in mind at all times. "My client wanted a comfortable design that was great for entertaining — elegant, colorful, and luxurious." Carleton hit it out of the ballpark. In the kitchen, she started by adding lots of natural light by designing new windows and a fantastic steel and glass door with functioning sidelights that open to allow sunshine in. Statement-making choices — the sparkling Cristallo quartzite island with waterfall sides, the custom brass details added to the range's dramatic 48" hood, and the pop of

color at the built-in bar are super chic. Simple slab door cabinets, a True refrigerator with custom details such as the stainless frame and bold brass hardware, and Restoration Hardware lights over the windows and sink keep the look warm and inviting. For the standout entrance, Carleton designed windows for the front wall and a door with functioning sidelights for a fabulous modern contrast to the craftsman's architectural features. Enclosing the existing porch increased square footage and made way for a new light-filled entry. Where the previous front door was, she installed arched pocket doors so that the living room enjoys the flood of light, but has privacy when needed. The cohesive color palette for the house was pulled from the client’s art. Berry upholstery for counter stools, dining chairs, and accent pillows; mink velvet sofas; and various shades of blue are used throughout. I love how she repurposed stacking cabinets by lacquering them in Benjamin Moore's Georgian Blue and placing them side by side in the dining room for additional storage.

The addition of a primary bath maximizes luxury and function in a small space. The shower designed with multiple water sources, a quartzite bench, and a place for everything is dreamy. "While the vanity is not large, there is storage for all the things she uses daily and the large mirror enlarges the room visually." Not only did this savvy renovation almost double the house’s size, but also packed it with high style and improved functionality — ideal reasons to engage a designer at the start of any project. Having an expert choose slabs of quartz, hexagon calacatta gold tiles, and major fixtures and appliances is money well spent.

D esigner Penny Francis spearheaded the renovation and decoration of this Uptown home to better reflect the personalities of her long-time clients. "They wanted a house that they could grow in and share with their families, and they're all about colorful, well-functioning spaces." The result is as joyful as it is glamorous. The kitchen required a total demolition. Penny opened it up to the family room and improved the layout which gained valuable additional work surfaces. By situating a custom 8-foot island with seating that faces the large window, she maximized views to the backyard, pool, and patio. Hand-selected quartz backsplash and countertops and a handmade stainless hood with brass strap detailing are elegant choices, and the reclaimed heart pine floors nod to the age of the house. I love the artisan vibe she created with the wall of polished porcelain tile — Night Lily by Iris Apfel — and custom floating shelves with a brass sconce from her shop, Eclectic Home.

The guest bath was also taken down to the studs. To

give the illusion of more space but still accommodate a shower and tub, Penny combined both functions within frameless clear glass, allowing the amazing glass ombré tile from Stafford Tile to take center stage. With hexagon Carrara marble floors alongside mirrors and lighting from her shop, she achieved a beautiful spa retreat. For a powder room tucked under the stairs, Penny covered the walls and ceiling with an Osborne & Little paper to "conceal the many odd angles and to add decorative drama." The dining and living rooms — each with their own design identities, depth of color, and layered pattern — work seamlessly together. For one, the rich velvet deco-inspired sofa and the client's art collection were the building blocks. The walls are painted Newburyport Blue and the ceiling and trim are China White, both by Benjamin Moore. The other plays off of the living room's dark wood furniture and secondary gray hues by going with Stonington Gray for walls and a creamy custom dining table and chairs from Highland House. With 12-foot ceilings, an abundance of natural light, and stately crown molding, the setting is

perfect for the mix of vintage, antique, and contemporary furnishings that Penny selected from Nola Rugs and Eclectic Home. "We saved completing the entrance hall until the painting by Rebecca Rebouché commissioned by my clients was finished. The colors in the adjoining rooms work beautifully with the art and with a console for family photos and holiday décor, the space sets the stage for what's to come." When I asked Penny for some tips on how she mixes prints and patterns together so masterfully, she had some great advice. "It works to have various scale patterns — small, medium, and large — in the same room. Additionally, go with an assortment of styles. For example, in the dining and living rooms, I used a large geometric on the sofa pillows, a chinoiserie print on the wingback chairs, and a small geometric on an occasional chair, all grounded with saturated solids." For me this house just sings. Every shade of blue flows throughout the entire decorative scheme, including in the fabulous outdoor spaces, and the happy pops of accent color in each room deliver nothing but joy.

WEDDINGS WE ADORE Dan & Rob By M i cha e l a B e chl e r | Photos by Hannah P i ck l e

R ob Strain and Daniel Bering met in 2016 and immediately bonded over a love of good food, exploring California, and a deep loyalty to loved ones. They had spent a lot of time – both alone and together – in New Orleans, including their first New Year's as a couple. "To us the city has so much soul, so much love, and so much fun. We wanted to cement it as a key city in our lives and were so excited to introduce our families and friends to it as well." The duo, who currently reside in Oakland, California, had their April 2020 nuptials planned and ready to go when the world stopped, and all weddings were put on pause. The two decided to marry on their original date by themselves on the beach and postponed the larger reception a few times, before drastically downsizing after a Covid spike and Hurricane Ida hit the city. Pivoting once again, Rob and Dan enjoyed a dreamy November weekend in New Orleans along with many of their close friends and family. The group sipped wine at Bacchanal, had a ball listening to music at The Maison, and ended the special time together with an elegant rooftop dinner at Capulet. The couple prepared for the celebration at Hotel Peter and Paul (where the reception was supposed to be in 2020), before arriving at the space which had been transformed into an autumnal masterpiece. Pistil and Stamen expertly arranged the long strings of marigolds throughout and incorporated open pomegranates into the luscious and vibrant tablescape. "In the new iteration of the event, we

really left it to them and our planner to surprise us and they absolutely floored us."

During the meal, guests treated the grooms to impromptu and touching toasts – a core memory from the evening – before enjoying ice cream and following Knockaz Brass Band in a second line to Anna's for the after party. While Rob and Dan's day was quite different from originally planned, it served the exact same purpose of bringing together loved ones in an intimate way. "Given all of the changes, we definitely learned to roll with the punches and let go of our precise vision for the day. We had amazing people in an amazing place, and it was all we needed."
