A s the temperatures drop in late September and cooler weather arrives, the city is filled with the sights and sounds of al fresco dining. Locals and visitors alike flock to romantic courtyards and open air dining spaces to enjoy seasonal cocktails and the relaxed fine dining that New Orleans does so well. Our season for al fresco dining may be short; but what it lacks in time, it more than makes up for with personality and style. Two of the most popular outdoor settings, Avo on historic Magazine Street and Sylvain nestled in the French Quarter, are also known for their outstanding fare. An evening at either popular restaurant will never disappoint. Al Fresco Romantic Courtyards and Plein Air Dining by katy danos | photos by leslie gamboni

At Avo, New Orleans-born chef Nick Lama prepares modern Italian dishes that reflect both his cherished family recipes and his originality. The ivy-walled indoor/outdoor courtyard has a retractable roof and the elegant outdoor candlelit dining room oozes with ambience. The staff is gracious, the cocktails creative (they have a fantastic happy hour), and everything on the menu is mouthwatering. As the sun goes down, head to Avo – flickering candles, air conditioning if needed, and an inventive menu all set the stage for a truly special al fresco dining experience.
