W hen Susu and Andrew Stall purchased their Italianate style house in the Garden District twelve years ago, their friends and family thought they were crazy. As Susu explains, "all we had inspected was the structure; we knew everything and I mean everything else had to be updated." But sometimes you can just feel it in your bones. They knew immediately that this grand old house, built in 1879 by noted German architect William Fitzner, could easily become their dream home with plenty of room for four pre-teen children and their art collection to grow. Well, okay, maybe not so easily. Though the stunning architecture was sound, a two and half year renovation was required to bring these particular old bones – plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling among other things – up to modern day speed. Fitzner, who immigrated to New Orleans in 1859 and is credited for building such gems as Dominican College and the former brewery which now houses the National World War II Museum, would surely be pleased.
