Rubenstein's (Rubenstein Bros.) got its start when Morris Rubenstein established a haberdashery in 1924 and welcomed his brothers as partners a few years later. The business now occupies six historic buildings on Canal Street and remains a family run enterprise. Far upriver from Rubenstein's, Perlis on Magazine Street has been outfitting Uptowners for everything from tailgating parties to Carnival balls since 1939, when Rogers Perlis opened up shop in the 6000 block. In 1972, Perlis' son, David George Perlis, secured the business a place in the city's fashion hall of fame by inventing the red crawfish logo to adorn his goods. From the early days of the 19th century to today, Jewish retailers have served the community as leaders in fashion and style. Here's to the many families among us who carry on this rich tradition.
