“I Shall Return”
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven… ” (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

n an early stage in World War II, General Douglas MacArthur and his army endured one of the lowest times in American history. When the Japanese attacked the Philippines, his isolated forces fought valiantly, but eventually withdrew to Bataan Peninsula, where they resisted bravely for four months. Later, in March of 1942, President Roosevelt ordered the controversial General to relocate to Australia and command Southwest Pacific Allied forces. After arriving “Down Under” and traveling by rail through the outback, he spoke of his reluctance to leave his men and also made this famous promise from Terowie, South Australia: “I came out of Bataan and I shall return .” On October 20, 1944, his troops invaded Leyte and six months later the Philippines celebrated liberation. He departed in defeat but kept his promise and returned in victory. A few weeks after the resurrection, a small band of believers met with Jesus in Jerusalem. After a going away meal, the Lord reminded them of the promised arrival of the Holy Spirit, and then ascended to
