HAVE YOU RSVP’D?
I heard a story recently about a singer named Ruth Metzger, who was called upon to sing at the wedding of a very wealthy man. The invitation stated that the reception would take place on the top two floors of Seattle’s Columbia Tower, the tallest building in Northwest America. At the reception, tuxedoed waiters served delicious hors d’oeuvres and exotic drinks. As the bride and groom made their way to a breathtaking glass and brass staircase that led to the top floor, someone cut a satin ribbon that hung across the bottom of the stairs. The couple began their ascent, followed by the guests, as the feast was formally announced. At the top, a maitre d’ with book in hand welcomed guests outside the doors. He scanned the M ’s. “I’m not finding it. Would you spell it please?” Ruth spelled it out carefully. Sadly, after searching his list again, the gentleman said, “I’m sorry, but your name isn’t here.” “There must be some mistake,” Ruth replied. “I’m the singer. I sang for this wedding!” “It doesn’t matter who you are or what you did” the maitre d’ replied. “Without your name in the book you cannot attend the banquet.” He called to a waiter, “Show these people to the service elevator, please.” The waiter walked the Metzger’s past tables of shrimp, whole smoked salmon, ice sculptures, etc. He then let them into the elevator and pushed G for parking garage. After the couple located their car and drove in despair several miles down the road, Roy said to his wife, “Sweetheart, what happened?” “May I have your name please?” “I am Ruthanna Metzger and this is my husband, Roy.”
