3:16 to Eternity
“For God so loved the world . . .” (John 3:16).
:10 to Yuma, a 2007 movie remake based on a short story by Elmore Leonard, ranks as one of Hollywood’s best Westerns in recent years. In this Academy Award nominated film, Russell Crowe plays a notorious outlaw named Ben Wade, who robs an armored stagecoach and is soon arrested in an Arizona saloon. He is then turned over to a convoy who agree to take him to a town called Contention, where he will be put on the 3:10 train to the Yuma Territorial Prison—thus the title. Although “3:10” symbolizes a criminal’s journey to incarceration, the numbers in this opening section, 3:16, reveal a sinner’s hope for freedom. As Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). 3
