R.G. Lee was visiting Gordon's Calvary at Jerusalem, possibly the site where Jesus was crucified. Lee told the Arab guide he wanted to walk to the top of the hill. At first the guide tried to discourage him, but when he saw that Lee was determined to go, he went along. Once on the crest, Lee removed his hat and stood with bowed head, greatly moved. "Sir," asked the guide, "have you been here before?" All born again believers were there. “How can that be?” you ask. Our sins were nailed to the cross along with Jesus. I have been crucified with Christ. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection” (Galatians 2:20, Romans 6:5) . Spiritually speaking, baptism illustrates the Gospel. Our submergence in water takes us back to the time of His death. Our coming out of the water points ahead to the time when, just as He was resurrected, we shall be as well. Observe too that baptism is pleasing to God. I’ve baptized scores of new believers over the past three decades and I’ve never seen one unhappy about it. Most emerge from the water smiling, realizing their sins have been forgiven and their names have been recorded in heaven. The congregation often applauds with approval. A band of extended family beams with pride and gratitude. Mom and Dad shed tears and snap pictures. Yet no one is more thrilled than God Himself. "Yes," replied Lee, "2,000 years ago."

“I AM WELL PLEASED”

Before Jesus launched into public ministry, His cousin John baptized Him in the Jordan River. As the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove, God said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). The Father’s favor rested upon Jesus because
