Aengus, Christian king of Ireland, was baptized by St. Patrick in the middle of the fifth century. During the rite, St. Patrick inadvertently leaned on his sharp-pointed staff and stabbed the king’s foot. Later, after looking down at the blood, realizing what he had done, and begging for forgiveness, the Saint asked the king, “Why did you suffer this pain in silence?” “I thought it was part of the ritual,” the king replied. 3 Although baptism should never be viewed as a ritual, it certainly signifies a connection to blood, the precious blood of Christ shed for the cleansing of our sins.
