However, if something seems amiss with your teen, trust your instincts. If you don’t like their new friends or if their behaviors have swerved down a negative path, be prepared to step in. But most teenagers’ experiments in self-discovery are harmless. Be supportive during this time of change and they will be more inclined to trust you and let you in.

As a parent, you need to be the most trustworthy part of your teenager’s life. Though your teen won’t always turn to you, knowing that they can and that you’ll always be there offers them a safety net should they need one. Stay the same loving parent of their childhood. Be accepting, supportive and, above all, consistent. They might not thank you now, but someday they will when you’ve both made it through the confusing and painful teenage years.
