before God that we were in the wrong. Once David was confronted and exposed by Nathan, he stated simply and clearly, “I have sinned against the Lord” (2 Samuel 12:13), later writing, “I acknowledged my sin toYou, my iniquity I did not hide” (2 Samuel 12:13, Psalm 32:5). This brings to mind the prodigal son in Jesus’ parable. Hitting rock bottom and coming to his senses, he determined within himself that he was wrong and needed to go back home and patch things up with his father. If you’ve slipped into sin and are experiencing guilt, admit it and take responsibility. As awkward and painful as it is, ad- mission is an unavoidable step to recovery. Confession – Once settling things inwardly, it’s time to take the outward move of confession. David followed up his admission of sin by saying, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord” (Psalm 32:5).And so it was with the prodigal son, who went home to a waiting father and proclaimed, “I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called you son” (Luke 15:21). There’s a story out of Spain about a father and son who had become estranged. The son ran away, after which the father set out to find him. He searched for months without success. Finally, in a last desperate attempt to find the boy, the father took out the fol- lowing ad in a Madrid newspaper: “Dear Paco, meet me in front of this newspaper office at noon on Saturday. All is forgiven. I love you. Your Father.” On Saturday, 800 Pacos showed up, seeking forgiveness from their fathers. 87 You can experience the same forgiveness that Paco, the prodigal son, and David received, if only you’re willing to submit, admit, and confess. As Scripture says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Restoration – Assured of God’s forgiveness, David contin- ues by petitioning, “Restore to me the joy ofYour salvation” (Psalm
