“POETRY BREAK”

OVERVIEW:

Poetry Break is an excellent program for lovers of poetry that allows an entity like a public library in a local community to facilitate the poetic expressions of local poets and those who want to become a poet. In 2022, the Villa Rica Library decided to regularly reserve one of the library’s rooms for the sharing of poetry. The goal at that time was to increase the interest in poetry, increase the reading of poetry and to let the community know about the poetry books that can be found in the library. Local poet and author Frank Clay, Jr. first took the initiative to start a poetry group at the Villa Rica Library. The goal of this publication is to inspire other libraries and communities to adopt a similar poetry program and offer insights for how to start a Poetry Break program. Secondly, the goal is to highlight and share the unique poetic works of some of the participants in the Vi l la Rica Library program organically called: “Poetry Break!” The thought should be that we all could use a “Poetry Break!” A time to embrace and enjoy poetry in its authentic and unique expressions in an open and informal listening environment.

CHAPTER ONE

THE BIRTH OF “POETRY BREAK”

Frank Clay, Jr., a self-published poet, is the visionary behind “Poetry Break,” a poetry program launched at the Villa Rica Library. His idea was simple yet profound: “once a month at the library, take a moment to pause from our hectic lives and immerse ourselves in authentic poetry. A group of local poets would set aside an hour where the authors could read their own poetry to the general public. To bring this vision to life, Frank collaborated closely with the library’s manager, Dr. Rachel Linn. They engaged in productive discussions to outline the essentials required for the poetry program to be named “Poetry Break. ” on determining a suitable time and space within the library for the program. Knowing it would take a little time to get it started, a commitment of 6 months was agreed to. It was also decided that the library would promote the program on the library calendar and on various other social media platforms to engage the wider reading & listening audience. Dr. Linn recognized the demand for a poetry program at the library would be a strong possibility which led to the library’s commitment to host the poetry program to be called, “Poetry Break” monthly on the last Tuesday of each month. The initial conversations focused

CHAPTER TWO

STRUCTURING THE “POETRY BREAK” SESSIONS:

The following will serve as a general guide on how to set up and run a successful “Poetry Break” program in a public library, with a focus on community involvement, learning more about poetry and the sharing of authentic or original poetry. The structure of Poetry Break is designed to foster creativity and connections with the local poetry community: 1. Every “Poetry Break “ should start on time with a general agenda of how the poetry session will be shared for that day. 2. Introductions and a welcome should be conducted by the “session leader” (informally chosen). It is always good to welcome all new and visiting attendees, especially if some one is present for the first time and desires to learn about or wants to recite their poetry.

4. Order of Reading: The order of what is to be read is established at the beginning of the session. You can be creative and have a standard introduction, especially if you plan to go Facebook Live or use some other social media performance. “Poetry Break” at the Villa Rica Library always starts with a “BOOM!” to get our Facebook Live sessions going. 5. The “Poetry Break” session leader expresses gratitude to all poets for their participation and will ask the listening audience to “like, share and comment” to help promote the poetry that was shared. 6. Once everyone has read their poetry, a theme for the upcoming month is discussed and agreed upon. While no participant is obligated to adhere to the theme, it often creates a sense of synergy for next month’s readings.

7. If time allows, poets engage in discussions about their work. Duration: The sessions typically last about one hour or less but a Poetry Break session could go longer. Note: The guidelines for poetry submissions are minimal; all forms of expression are welcomed. Poets are encouraged to present their work in their unique styles, which is a celebration of a poet’s individuality. Poetry Break is a sanctuary for all poets in the community both seasoned and newcomers alike. Additionally, we encourage participants to collaborate on a creative challenge where they compose a poem using only the titles generated collectively during the session.

CHAPTER THREE

Poetic Creative Work Sessions:

The training programs at Poetry Break are designed to empower poets by enhancing their creative skills. These sessions cover vital areas such as essay structure, storytelling techniques, and both persuasive and creative writing. One fun exercise involves cutting out article titles from magazines, prompting participants to brainstorm and spark new ideas and creative thought through forming the unexpected combinations of words to make a poetic expression. In addition to creative exercises, constructive feedback sessions play a crucial role in the program. These sessions create a supportive atmosphere where poets can share their work and receive positive feedback from their peers. This encouragement is invaluable, particularly for emerging poets who are sti l l bui lding their confidence in their writing abilities.

YOUR SELF-PUBLISHING JOURNEY:

Self-publishing poetry is a unique and fulfilling journey. We outline five key steps for aspiring poets looking to navigate the self-publishing process, from finalizing their manuscript to choosing the right publishing platform. One inspiring story that resonates within our community is that of Sharon McLeod, an aspiring poet with a dream to publish her own book. After participating in LITFEST, she met an author/ poet who guided her on her path to self publishing her first book on Amazon. Amazingly, she achieved her dream.

THE COVER OF SHARON M. McLEOD’S POETRY BOOK

In "Sharon's Poetry Book," writer Sharon M. McLeod takes readers on an intimate journey through her life as seen through the lens of poetry. Each poem reflects her personal experiences, intricately woven with inspiration drawn from a higher power —God.

As the verses unfold, Sharon shares the powerful influence of divine inspiration in her life and hopes that her words will resonate with readers, touching their hearts and souls. This collection exemplifies the transformative impact of faith and the extraordinary beauty that emerges when one’s life is aligned with a higher purpose. Self-publishing on Amazon can be an exciting venture! Here are five steps to get you started: 1. Write and Edit Your Book: Create your manuscript and ensure it's well-written and free of errors. Consider hiring a professional editor to help refine your work. 2. Format Your Manuscript: Prepare your book for publication by formatting it according to Amazon's guidelines. Make sure your manuscript meets their specifications for both eBook and print formats. 3. Create a Book Cover: Design an eye catching cover that attracts readers. You can use tools like Canva or hire a graphic designer. Remember that the cover is a crucial part of marketing your book. 4. Set Up Your Amazon KDP Account: Sign up for a Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) account. Follow the prompts to enter your tax information and set up your payment options.

5. Publish Your Book: Upload your manuscript and cover, fill out the necessary details (like book description, keywords, categories), and then hit the publish button! Monitor your book's performance and consider marketing strategies to boost visibility. By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to self-publishing your work on Amazon. You can do it

CHAPTER FIVE

EXPLORING NEW POETRY FORMATS:

At Poetry Break, participants also explore various poetry formats. One exciting workshop focused on the Haiku, a traditional Japanese form characterized by its 5-7-5 syllable structure. Taught by volunteer William G. McLeod, the Haiku is a popular choice among poets, not only for its simplicity but also for the challenge it presents—capturing vivid imagery and deep emotions within a limited framework. Here are three reasons why writing Haikus can be especially beneficial: 1. Enhances Brevity: The Haiku format teaches poets to express their thoughts concisely, refining their abi l ity to communicate powerful messages with minimal words. 2. Promotes Mindfulness: Writing Haikus encourages poets to observe and appreciate the small details in their surroundings, fostering a greater connection to nature and the world around them. 3. Evokes Emotion: By capturing fleeting moments, Haikus can powerfully resonate with readers, leaving lasting impressions that evoke reflection and feeling.

Traditionally, a Haiku meets the following requirements:

• Haikus consist of three phrases. • A 575 Haiku is composed in a 5 syllable, 7 syllable, 5 syllable pattern. • A 757 Haiku is composed in a 7 syllable, 5 syllable, 7 syllable pattern. • Haiku phrases don’t have to rhyme. Through poetry sessions like these, Poetry Break not only nurtures individual creativity but also builds a vibrant community of poets eager to learn more about poetry, share their voices and connect through the transformative power of poetry.

THE POWER OF POETRY BREAK

The innovative use of Facebook Live to introduce the participating poets and to give exposure to their work has been a blessing. Real benefit from the poets’ view is that we have an opportunity to gather with varying and like-minds about creating, improving and sharing our poetry. Without “Poetry Break” many poems will remain in books and folders; however, because of “Poetry Break,” the poets who read and share their poetry truly enjoy it and they also know some listener is enjoying their poetry and are benefiting from their poetic words. Yes, even in Psychology Today and other publications, we can see the beneficial aspects of poetry for mental well-being. Poetry can be a powerful tool for emotional expression, self-discovery, and even healing. It can help individuals process difficult emotions, reduce negative feelings, and foster a sense of interconnectedness.

COORDINATING

POETRY

BREAK

WITH

LIBRARY ADMINISTRATION:

Working with Library Directors is key to introducing the program. It would be good to have a set time and day in mind to see where “Poetry Break” can fit within the l ibrary or the organizations monthly calendar. Set a date and time to meet. Importance of collaboration: aligning goals and expectations. Selecting the right size and place for “Poetry Break” is important. Access to WIFI is helpful and having the support to promote “Poetry Break” is helpful . After each session report attendance and give an account of the number of views on Facebook. If you decide to use Facebook Live… It is amazing to watch your viewing/listening audience grow from month to month. It is always a good thing to thank the library staff for their support. Poetry Break could never be as successful as it has without the staff’s support.

MEET SOME OF THE POETS, THEIR POEMS & THEIR STORIES:

Yvonne Walters Hubertandy62@gmail.com

I began reading poetry when I was in the third grade. It was part of the curriculum in my elementary school. After taking my first poetry class in college and becoming exposed to the different styles of different poets, I developed a growing desire to write. While reading the poems I would cling on to every word, imagery, tone and rhythm and delve into deep reflection. Poetry to me is soothing as well as uplifting and the sounds and imagery stretches the imagination without limit. You can write what you are feeling deep in your soul. My inspiration for writing comes from anything I see and hear around in my daily wake. Images of the landscape, a walk in the forest, observing the lake or a river as it flows, the ocean moving the mighty waves to shore, gives me inspiration as well. Music also inspires me to write. I like to write about positives and themes with a lighthearted touch.

She discovered her gift of writing at 10 years old, when her English teacher told the entire class to write a poem. She later entered a contest her poem entitled "Rainbow” to her surprise had won. Writing for Alyrica is cathartic as well as freeing. She often use poetry to self soothe and to work out complicated situations in her life. As a US Navy Veteran, she joined POETRY BREAK to have a community of other people that indulge in and love poetry like her. Alyrica is working on her first poetry book to be published called: " FOR YOUR APPLAUSE..”

For Suicide Prevention:

Dear Friend, I didn't hear you when you were silently crying. I couldn't see you when you sat all alone. I wasn't aware you were feeling bad inside. I didn't know anything was even wrong. I couldn't see the pain in your face.

I didn't comprehend you were lonely in a crowd. I didn't know how to approach your wounded soul. I couldn't understand your secret pain, for crying out loud. Please, don't go thinking that I'm insensitive. Don't go feeling that the world doesn't care. Stay and tell me what's hurting you.

I certainly know that life can be unfair. No no, suicide is a permanent solution, To a temporary problem that will flee.

Many a people gave up the ghost way too soon And never got to see what the end's gonna be. Just you stay one more day. Because each day we live is a unique gift. Yesterday may not have been so kind to you. But tomorrow may take a sudden shift. Have you ever heard the old adage What a difference a day makes? Well, don't go erasing your future By trying to obliterate your past mistakes. Cuz Orphan Annie will tell you just hang on Until the day is done. She knew that if we faced today's troubles Tomorrow there will be sun!

I may not be "the answer" you're seeking. I may not be the silver lining in your cloud.

But, you can always come talk with me (Since my ears are open - my heart is too) And, I love to hear from you - for crying out loud!

Frank Clay Jr.

You might say, I am a Langston Hughes type poet, who writes with rhythms and contemporary themes that can help us understand and cope with the realities of life. When I want to take a break… I read and write poetry. It just does it for me - it’s my jam. I have always wanted to be a poet from the time I got my first library card. Poetry to me was freedom in writing what I wanted to write. I was a letter writer back when we wrote letters to each other. I was a Valentine Day writer of love rhymes and I made my own greeting cards. My poetry could not be graded but only appreciated. I wrote poetry to communicate the struggles, realities and joys of life. I wrote to have a voice in the universe poetically. I have self-published two books: PRESS ON - Truthful Insights into the Lives We Live and WARM THOUGHTS, Poems from St. Thomas Virgin Island. I am glad to be a poet in retirement where I can do it the way I desire… no strings attached. And I love taking my “Poetry Breaks.”

I NEED A CUP OF TEA © Frank Clay Jr. I need a cup of tea! With white sugar of course... Two sugars will do!

Nothing like warming the morning And sweetening the moment... When you feel so bitter inside. That’s when I need a cup of tea! Black tea of course... The darker the better... my way to brighten the day. It’s how I feel right now... With so many things upon me... Just one cup will surely get me by I need a cup of tea! Hot... of course So I can hold it until it comforts me And warms this moment... So I can go on. So I can try... one more time.

TEA UP© Frank Clay Jr.

In moments of chaos, when my life takes its toll and I find myself in a cold space. There's something in my tea cup that can fill up my soul... . at least for the moment... So I “tea up!” With each savoring sip, a restoration is found To ease the troubling thoughts... To block the mess and all the stress Just the thing to soothe...my mind. Through the warm heat waves that rises under my noise as I tip my cup closely... A sense of calmness unfurls,

TEA Up © continued

As the sweet fragrance of the tea devolves above my tongue,

I can feel a secret to life being shared It’s tea time and I want to listen closely. The warmth of the tea cup in my hands slightly but tightly I embrace, Feels like a microphone And yes I do have something to say to myself... “You’re okay honey...It will be okay...” The aroma applauds my positive attitude of gratitude, My worries, they all dissipated and even disappear from me At least for this very moment... I feel okay! I am okay! A lesson I am learning with each tip of the cup Learning to cherish each moment like this gracefully Feeling the possibilities, I continue to “tea up” Holding my cup with warm hands... It’s the simplest of things we can do with our time To tea up can be so gratifying. I tell myself to “hold on” and sip my favorite tea this way Until my cup is near empty I will keep sipping from my favorite tea cup, And by the way... There is nothing wrong “tea-ing up” Taking a little more tea time To have a little more tea...if I may... I think that would be okay Don’t you? Inviting warm, savoring reflections As the burdens are sipped away...

WRITE ME A SPRING POEM © Frank Clay Jr.

Write me a spring poem Won’t you please?

Something to lift my spirit And bring me to my knees ... I need to hear that natural rhythm Of timely words in a melody... One of those thoughtful poems That will show me inwardly What I am and what I should be. Yes, write me a spring poem Won’t you please? Something that will give me hope... Or help me to believe That this world is a better place If you can conceive. Share the words in a thoughtful poem That has capacity to give So I can have the capacity receive In this season
