As we delve into this unpleasant but necessary subject, note first the great white throne judgment involves a sec- ond resurrection, the rising from the dead of unbelievers. As John records, “ The rest of the dead (unbelievers) did not come to life until the thousand years were completed,” addinglater, “The sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them ” (Revelation 20:5,13). Although most people have no problem accepting the resurrection of Christians, some raise eyebrows at the thought of the lost being raised. And yet, the Bible is absolutely clear on the subject. Like Jesus said: “ An hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment” (John 5:28,29). “The two resurrections remind us that we are responsible people. God has set us in the world with many opportunities for helping others and generally cooperating with His purpos- es. We should not think it a matter of indifference whether we make use of our opportunities or not. To whom much has been given, of them much will be required.” 60 Observe, too, this judgment entails the opening of books. As John writes, “And books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged from the things written in the books, according to their deeds” (Revelation 20:12). Examining this verse, note the following: Book of Life— A.K.A. “the Lamb’s book of life (Reve- lation 13:8, Revelation 21:27) is a written record of everyone saved since the beginning of time. And Revelation is not the only place it is mentioned. For example, when the disciples
