Dear Douglasville and Douglas County Residents: It is my pleasure to provide you with this guide as a reference for activities taking place within the City of Douglasville’s Parks and Recreation Department. Information from the Douglasville/Douglas County Cultural Arts Council and the Douglasville Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is also included. Many residents ask various questions regarding our policies and procedures as well as inquire about our programs and services. Answers to much of these questions can be found in the “frequently asked questions and answers” section of this guide. A map of all city park locations is also available for your reference. My department strives to provide quality programs and world-class customer service with a touch of Southern hospitality. Our program instructors are well qualified in their professions and they each measure up to our high standards of service. City park facilities are safe and clean − therefore each visit to the park is met with an assurance for your enjoyment. Douglasville’s park system is a full-time and year-round recreation establishment with staffing available to you Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Holiday closings and park hours are listed on page 6 . My team of full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees are here to serve you in the best and friendliest way possible. Q: Do you need a license to fish at Hunter Park? A: Yes, a Georgia State fishing license is required to fish at Hunter Park. Hunter Park is a catch and release facility. Q: Will there be any outdoor pavilions at Hunter Park? A: The Douglasville Parks & Rec Department has budgeted for one pavilion to be built at Hunter Park in 2016. We currently have a pavilion in our baseball plaza area for rent. For information, call 770-920-3007. Q: What is the number to Deer Lick Park? A: 770-920-7129.

Q: Is the arcade at Hunter Park’s Ike Owings Community Center open to the public? A: Yes, the arcade is available to the public and is also available for birthday parties, family reunions, and other special events. Q: How long are the walking tracks? A: At Hunter Park, 3 laps = 1 mile. At Fowler Field, 3 laps = 1-1/4 miles. At Jessie Davis Park, 5 laps = 1 mile. Q: How do I find out if any of the playing fields are closed? A: For up-to-date field conditions, call our information line at 678-449-3150

Q: Can you put a barbe- cue grill on the terrace at Hunter Park? A: No. Hunter Park has a designated area for grilling and frying. Please contact the front desk at 770-920-3007 for more information.

Q: Can I register an Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA) team at Hunter Park? A: Yes, contact 678-449- 3072 for more informa- tion. We have leagues during all four seasons. Each league is limited to four teams. Q: Can you reserve

Q: Is the patio/terrace included when reserv- ing the ballroom, full and half? A: Yes, the patio is included in the rental fee for the ballroom. Q: What is the largest room available at the Hunter Park Ike Owings Community Center? A: The ballroom is the largest room at the community center which can accommodate approximately 140 people. The ballroom comes with tables and chairs and includes a warming kitchen. Q: Are the Fourth of July fireworks shot from Hunter Park? A: No. Fireworks are displayed from West Pines Golf Course. Best viewing sites include Arbor Place Mall and surrounding areas.

Fowler Field for athletic events and parties? A: Yes, contact 678-449-3072 for more information. Q: Does Douglasville Parks and Recreation have a computer lab? A: Yes, there is a computer lab located at Jessie Davis Park. The computer lab consists of desktop computers and tablets. Tablets are also available in the lobby area at Hunter Park. The Douglasville Parks and Recreation Department operates eight parks within the city limits. The City’s parks system totals 391 acres, including several specialty facilities such as ball fields, a swimming pool, fishing lake, walking track, tennis courts, gymnasium, and recreation activity centers. Other facilities in Douglasville’s park system include West Pines Golf Club and Fowler Field Soccer Complex. Hunter Park is the city’s largest park and is the headquarters for the Douglasville Parks and Recreation Department. Hunter Park features a 16,000-square-foot community center and covered playground, a five-acre lake surrounded by a walk- ing track, a miniature train, a gazebo, and several picnic areas. The park’s athletic complex includes seven Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA) cer- tified tennis courts, 10 ball fields, a special needs

Miracle League ball field, and 12 new batting cages. Hunter Park is also host to many festivals, sports activi- ties, and recreational events.

Ike Owings Community Center The Ike Owings Community Center is a 16,000-square-foot facility located at Hunter Park. It includes a 128 person ballroom, a meeting room, an arts and crafts room, two classrooms, and a dance studio. The ballroom, meeting room, and arts and crafts room are each equipped with audio/visual technology. The use of a warming kitchen is included with ballroom rentals. The center’s arcade and vending area is accessible for all rentals and is also available for public use. There is also an 18 hole disc golf course available for public use. Alice J. Minor Hawthorne Community Center The Alice J. Minor Hawthorne Community Center is located at Jessie Davis Park. The 16,000-square-foot facility, built to accommodate Douglasville’s growing community, opened in October 2002. The center is named in honor of Dougl- asville native Alice J. Minor Hawthorne who was killed in the 1996 Olympic Park bombing. The Alice J. Hawthorne Community Center features a 9,600-square- foot gymnasium, a rentable meeting room, and a computer lab. Other ameni- ties at Jessie Davis Park include horseshoe pits, outdoor basketball courts, a playground, swimming pool, two shelters, and an outdoor football complex. Gazebo at Hunter Park For intimate outdoor events, Hunter Park now offers a gorgeous

16’ x 16’ gazebo. The 256 sq. ft. shelter can comfortably fit up to 15 people and is available for two- and four-hour rentals. Chairs are also available to rent. Power is provided at no charge with rentals as well as complimentary benches to seat up to 24 individuals. Ball Fields A $150 fee will be charged per field, per day on all fields for tournament play. A $250 deposit is required to be paid at the time of the field res- ervation request. Field rental fee should be paid within 10 days prior to the scheduled activity. Fee is for the rental of the facility only. The outdoor light fee is $20 per hour, per field. Brick Campaign Hunter Park Veterans Memorial Air Plane Monument From September 7 until March 31 you can purchase a brick for any veteran to be placed at the Hunter Park Veterans Memorial Air Plane Monument for $20. The bricks will be placed in the Air Plane Monument in time for Independence Day July 4. Brick order forms must be submitted by March 31 to ensure that memorial bricks are shipped by Independence Day. Get ready for some disc golf fun at Hunter Park! Disc golf is an outdoor sport played much like

traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc. The object of the game is to complete a course with the fewest throws to target baskets along the route. Hunter Park’s 18-hole disc golf course spanes though 83 acres and will be open to recreational and professional play.

The Parks and Recreation Department seeks to improve the quality of life for Douglasville and Douglas County resi- dents. The department maintains eight parks with 11 athletic fields, a football complex, a tennis complex, and a soccer complex. Of its eight parks, four include playground facilities, and Hunter Park and Jessie Davis Park both have community centers. Activities range from youth and adult sports, educational classes, and day camps. Special events are also hosted at park facilities throughout the year for the public’s enjoyment.

GEORGIA GAMES FISHING DERBY June 25 | 9 AM - 12 PM HUNTER PARK Cast your line to see what you can catch at Hunter Park’s lake during the free Georgia Games Fishing Derby featuring prizes and fun for the entire family! Horseshoes is a fun game to play and watch, especially at the annual Douglasville Horseshoe Tournament. Come out for a great time competing against other horseshoe pitchers in tournament action. Adult players of all skill levels are welcome to participate in the single and doubles style tournament. The cost is $5 for singles and $10 for doubles. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place in each division.
