“Open our Eyes, Lord”

“Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see” (2 Kings 6:17).

Several years after the opening of Disneyland near Los Angeles in 1955, Walt Disney envisioned an even larger park in Florida. He set plans in motion, but died in 1966, almost five years before the opening of Walt Disney World in Orlando. On the day of the park’s opening, a visitor said to Mike Vance, Creative Director of Walt Disney Studios, “Isn’t it too bad Walt Disney didn’t live to see this?” Oh, but he did see it,” Vance replied. “That’s why it’s here.” If you intend to thrive in your walk with the Lord, there will come times when you’ll have to envision spiritually what you can’t see literally. There’s actually a word for that. It is called faith. As the Bible says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Exploring our text for this chapter, 2 Kings 6:8-23, we’ll encounter a man who saw spiritually what wasn’t there literally. It all starts with an act of defiance. “Now the king of Aram was at war with Israel. After conferring with his officers, he said, ‘I will set up my camp in such and such a place’” (2 Kings 6:8).
