6 Answering God’s Call

“Then he set out to follow Elijah and become his servant” (1 Kings 19:21).

I grimaced recently when the preacher announced that his church was “hiring” an assistant minister. It’s a pet peeve of mine. Churches don’t hire people to fill staff positions, rather, they call them. Technically speaking, God actually does the calling, graciously including praying people in on the process. We examined Elijah’s call in chapter one. He was just a normal person like you and me, available and influential, ready to represent God before a wayward people. Yet he was just one man. Someone else would have to serve as prophet once Elijah left this earth and that person would be Elisha. You may be considering skimming or skipping this chapter, thinking you'll never serve in some sort of “official” ministerial capacity. Yet, the Bible teaches that God places a call on the
