This brings to mind a story dating back in 1519. It was then when a Spanish expedition ventured across the seas to the new world. Landing exhausted in Mexico after an extensive journey, leader Hernan Cortoz ordered that the ships be scuttled. Thus, they were burned to the waterline to remove any temptation on the part of his soldiers to turn back, giving us the phrase “burning the boats.” Elisha answered God’s call by burning the plowing equipment. Perhaps God has brought you to a position where you need to “burn the boats.” As the old hymn says, “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back.” Meditate on these words to the Jews exiled in Babylon as this chapter concludes: “‘For I know the plan that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope’” (Jeremiah 29:11). God won’t lead you into an assignment without equipping you with the means to carry it out. Is now the time to answer His call?
