Why Join the AGA?
The Alabama Grocers Association (AGA) is committed to advancing the success of Alabama’s food industry through proactive advocacy, industry education, strategic public relations, and valuable networking opportunities.
ABOUT THE ALABAMA GROCERS ASSOCIATION
Since 1992, the Alabama Grocers Education Foundation (AGEF) has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships to outstanding students affiliated with our member companies. These scholarships support higher education and help strengthen Alabama’s future workforce in the food industry. AGA is also proud of our partnership in the Buy Alabama’s Best program with the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries and the Alabama Food Manufacturers and Producers Association . This initiative highlights products that are made, manufactured, or headquartered right here in Alabama—boosting local businesses and encouraging residents to shop local. Beyond promotion, Buy Alabama’s Best has a strong charitable mission. Through partnerships with our retail members, the program has raised over $ 855,000 to support causes like combating childhood cancer and fighting hunger in communities across the state. Founded in 1990, the Alabama Grocers Association (AGA) is the premier trade association representing the state’s retail food industry. With more than 325 member companies operating over 850 retail locations , AGA represents over 90% of grocery retailers in Alabama —from large regional chains to independent, single-store operators. Our membership extends beyond retail to include wholesalers, manufacturers, brokers, distributors, and service providers , reflecting the full scope of Alabama’s food supply chain. The food retail industry is a vital driver of Alabama’s economy, supporting more than 188,000 jobs with annual wages exceeding $6.8 billion . Grocers contribute over $1.5 billion in state taxes and generate an overall economic impact of more than $18 billion . AGA is proud to be the voice of this essential industry—advocating for its interests, supporting its growth, and promoting its critical role in communities across the state. ADVOCACY & LEGISLATIVE ENGAGEMENT The Alabama Grocers Association (AGA) actively advocates for legislation impacting the food industry at the federal, state, and local levels. Our work goes beyond retail—addressing critical issues like minimum wage, healthcare, taxes, fees, and food safety that affect the broader business community. With over 1.9 million Alabamians living in underserved areas, AGA champions increased funding to improve access to affordable, nutritious food. These efforts help revitalize low income neighborhoods, create jobs, and stimulate local economies. Through our political action fund, SACK PAC , we support pro-business candidates who understand and advance the needs of our industry. AGA also serves as a key liaison with government agencies, actively monitoring and influencing regulatory matters. To help members stay compliant and competitive, we provide essential resources and training programs—including responsible vendor training and food safety manager certification — designed to support safe, effective business operations.
