Commissioner Vernon Barnett Alabama Department of Revenue

Appointed by Governor Kay Ivey, Vernon Barnett began his service as the Alabama Commissioner of Revenue in May 2017. Prior to his appointment, Commissioner Barnett served as Executive Counsel at the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. From 2006 to 2011, he was the Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Corrections and a Deputy Legal Advisor to the Governor. Commissioner Barnett began his state career in the Alabama Office of the Attorney General in August 1997, eventually serving as a Deputy Solicitor General. Commissioner Barnett is a graduate of Vanderbilt Universi- ty and the University of Alabama School of Law. He and his wife Robyn have two young children, Ian and Olivia.

Deputy Commissioner Derrick Coleman Alabama Department of Revenue

Derrick Coleman joined the team at the Alabama Department of Revenue in 1993, beginning his career in the Vehicle Valuation Section of the Property Tax Division. Prior to being named Deputy Commissioner, Derrick served as Director of the Property Tax Division, building on his experience as a supervisor in the Real Property and Field Operations sections of the division. As Deputy Commissioner, Derrick is responsible for overseeing the Property Tax, Sales and Use Tax, and Internal Audit/Security Divisions, and the Office of Taxpayer Advocacy. Derrick serves as ADOR representative on the GIS Executive Committee and is a member of the Auburn University Government and Economic Development Institute (GEDI) advisory board. When away from the office, he enjoys spending time with family and friends.

TUESDAY BUSINESS SESSION

Brent Cotten is the Vice President, Global Customer & Industry Affairs, at The Hershey Company. In this role, he represents his company at US trade associations, trade events, and customer events to help establish and build strong working relationships with both North America and Global Industry Leaders. Cotten began his career with Hershey Foods in February 1992, as a Sales Representative in the Nashville District. He held several leadership positions within The Hershey Company and accepted the role of Director, National Accounts Convenience in June 2006 where he was responsible for the Sales of US Strategic C Store Customers. He attended Middle Tennessee State University where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Marketing. He currently serves on several trade associations to include NACS Supplier Board of Directors & serving as Chair-Elect, Convenience Distributors Association Board of Directors, FMI Foundation Board of Trustees, amongst many others. In 2019, Brent was inducted into the National Confectionery Sales Association Hall of Fame. This award is the candy industry’s highest accolade. Also, he is now on the NCSA Board of Directors. Kyle May Senior Manager External Relations Reynolds American Inc.

Kyle May, Senior Manager External Relations, started his career with RAI in 2012. Prior to joining RAI Kyle had extensive internship and staff experience across the political spectrum i ncluding the U.S House of Representatives, Congressional Campaigns, Advocacy Organizations, and Public Health Policy. He started with RAI as a Territory Manager in Greenville, NC. From there he was an Account Manager in Fort Worth, TX, and most recently a Senior Division Manager in Macon, GA. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Lenoir-Rhyne University and a Masters of Business Administration from Grand Canyon University. He and his wife Lauren are the proud parents of their rambunctious toddler, Jonah.
