Adore August 2020

Ellen explains, "Since it's all in his own space, I allow him to leave his intricate designs out for longer periods of time than I would if it was all downstairs!" The fabulous teepee was a gift from his paternal grandmother and the firepit was something Ellen bought from Land Of Nod while she was still pregnant to tuck away for later. I love the posse of critters and friends — birthday gifts from friends and family — especially the red fox wearing one of Ellen's sequined face masks. "His collection of animals is amazing," says Ellen. "Add the teepee and some pillows and boom! It's an interactive art installation. His room reminds me of Wes Anderson's fanciful movie, the Fantastic Mr. Fox ." Of course, the bedroom is covered in great art and whimsical objects reflecting Ellen's love for street maps and travel, unusual textiles, and bold colors. One gallery wall is a collection of art purchased while travelling through Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Above the bed, Donald's own art from school is featured alongside a NYC subway map and a Jazz Fest kid's map that he found while estate sale hunting with his mom. A sailing ship hangs from the ceiling along with a colorful mobile, his growing collection of hats are on wall pegs, and open bins and baskets corral books and toys. "It's what we call organized chaos," says Ellen. "It's color pop, art pop, heirloom pop...pop goes the weasel and the weasel goes pop."

O ur house is our safe haven. Everything in it has a purpose and brings us a sense of peace. We are out West now, but Donald is missing his room. Can you imagine having such a great room that you miss it even when on a fabulous mountain adventure? He is one lucky guy. - Ellen Macomber
