W ith the stay at home order, local brides and couples planning destination weddings scrambled to make difficult and often painful decisions. For many, it was easy to roll everything forward a year. Vendor deposits remained intact and Pinterest boards did not have to be reimagined. But for most, the initial shock and ever-changing safety information created problems to solve that had never been considered. 25% capacity in a town known for large Southern weddings? Saying "I do" without grandparents present or lifetime bffs flying in? No dazzling party bands with packed dance floors? It was a lot. The five couples we feature here are nothing short of resilient. After much soul- searching, they recrafted their shattered plans in deeply personal ways. Their creative solutions for everything from "change the dates" to Zoom viewing to intimate gestures are memorable. I love how they proudly wore their gowns and tuxedos as they focused on their commitments. There's something very old fashioned and beautiful about it. One day future generations will look back at these pictures and say, "Those are my grandparents. They got married during the great pandemic." Love wins. Families matter. New Orleans truly matters.

N ancy Worley and Christopher Faux met at Williams College and embarked on a long distance relationship after graduation. While Chris pursued a career in New York City as a private equity investor, Nancy completed medical school here in New Orleans. When Nancy matched with Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan for her Ophthalmology residency, the two would finally be in the same city, and a wedding date was set. Original plans included hundreds of guests, a ceremony at Rayne United Methodist church, and a reception at Il Mercato. But as Nancy explains, "Seeing patients with Covid during my intern year at Ochsner quickly taught me the 'life is short' approach to decision making. We considered postponing, shortening the guest list, but in the end we knew that making this commitment now and celebrating with our loved ones as safely as possible was what mattered most."

Audubon Park with immediate family only (one aunt looked on from afar with binoculars). The group then took pedicabs back to the bride's home for dinner and dancing. As a huge surprise for Nancy, dear family friends hired a band, ordered masks, and spread the word by mouth that there would be an impromptu champagne toast on the front lawn for extended family, friends, and neighbors. Naturally, a second line formed and as beautifully expressed by Nancy, "We have never felt so surrounded by love." Because Nancy was traveling to New Orleans by air as little as possible, designer Suzanne Perron agreed to finish her dress the day before the wedding. It was perfect. Floral designer Kim Starr Wise created a romantic and elegant setting at the bride's home with candlelight, garden roses, and delphinium. Music was provided by the DJ, Raj Smoove, and the newlyweds and their families danced the night away under the twinkling stars.

A fter a four-year long engagement, Daneka Dasher and Patrick Moore Jr. decided to scrap their plans for a traditional wedding with family and friends and elope under the oaks instead. "We thought what better way than to run off to our favorite place and recreate our very first date," says Daneka. Accompanied by just their photographer and officiant, the HR specialist and stock analyst professed their love for one another in full wedding attire at the Audubon Park Hyams Fountain Gardens on November 8, 2020. The bride styled her hair and got ready by herself, a far cry from the experience she had once imagined. "I've always wanted that picture perfect moment of getting dressed with my mother and sipping champagne with my childhood friends. However, the blissful feeling of being in the moment made me realize I didn't miss those moments at all thanks to our lovely officiant."

"B efore we were even engaged, I knew I would get married at Sacred Heart," says Coco Ellis Howe. "My parents were married in the same chapel and I'm a 5th generation Sacred Heart alum. We always wanted an intimate wedding, so we knew that the reception would be at my parent's home. It's where I grew up and where Jonathan proposed." The original date was in May, but the pandemic had other plans. After much thought, the couple decided to reschedule for September. together and move on with our future. We knew this new date would be it, no matter what." The guest list was cut to a tenth of the size, Coco's three sisters dressed with her at home, and the reception was moved entirely outside. Family members were invited to attend the mass, wearing masks and spaced six feet apart. "We also sent a link to the entire ceremony for those who could not attend. We didn't want to put anyone at risk." Long before Covid, while on a long layover in London, Coco and her family (including dad) visited her favorite designer's salon where she fell in love with the first dress she tried on. The Phillipa Lepley gown fit her perfectly, needing no alterations, so home it came in her carry on luggage. For the wedding, Jonathan wore a watch gifted to him by his late grandmother and British antique coins as cufflinks given to him by his father that day. Floral design by Dunn and Sonnier provided a showstopper element not sidelined by Covid restrictions. And out of caution, the couple opted for their own Spotify playlist instead of a band. They danced their first dance to Ella Fitzgerald's Isn't It Romantic? And yes, Mr. and Mrs. Howe, it definitely is.

N atasha Patel and Jeff Harwood became friends early on during business school at Georgetown University, and their close friendship became a relationship three years after graduation. When planning their nuptials, the couple, who resides in New York, decided on New Orleans for their March wedding. "It's one of our favorite city destinations for its blend of culture, music, food, history, architecture, and people — the perfect place to get married," Natasha says. The plans were moved to July due to Covid, and the two spent the next few months closely monitoring the situation. "With Covid, we quickly learned that nothing is in your control and to just roll with the punches which made our relationship even stronger." The original plans were altered for the safety of their guests, and the bride and groom opted for an entirely outdoor wedding weekend at Race & Religious. The guest list was limited, tables were socially distanced, and reminders about wearing masks and staying sanitized were set to song lyrics and placed throughout the venue.

In lieu of a rehearsal dinner, the weekend kicked off with a Sangeet, a traditional Indian pre-wedding event complete with singing, music, henna, and dancing. Saturday's festivities began in the morning with a modified Baraat (a parade for the groom and his family) which led into the Hindu ceremony. Natasha and Jeff donned custom traditional attire during each of the Indian celebrations and encouraged guests to participate in the numerous wedding traditions. Later in the day, the bride changed into her Suzanne Neville gown for the Christian ceremony, which was officiated by their business school friend, Dmitry Terekhov. "He had done such a great job capturing our relationship not only with each other, but the impact it has had on our friends and family and the relationships we've had with them over the years." The weekend ended with dinner and a reception, offering another opportunity for the newlyweds to visit with guests. "Everything felt so special given all that we had gone through to pull off the wedding and how much our family and friends went through to share in that happiness."

T he original plan for Kat Saussy and Jed Antoun was a ceremony and dinner at Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse for immediate family only, followed by a honeymoon in New Zealand and a large celebration on New Year's Eve upon their return. Due to Covid and as a physician in the community, she explains, "Jed and I wanted to lead by example, putting the safety of our family and friends first. So we moved the honeymoon and party to 2021 and kept our intimate wedding plans in place. We'd already dated for over six years, so for us the most important thing was the marriage. All the rest is just icing on the cake." On December 4, Kat dressed in her stunning gown by designer Pronovias and Jed donned his custom suit from Luca Falcone, and they proceeded to spend the early part of the day with their favorite pet person, Habibi, at spots the three of them regularly frequent. Creole Creamery hosted them alone before opening hours, and they lunched outside at Juan's Flying Burrito. "It just felt so us." Later, they joined their parents, siblings, one aunt, and a grandmother at Trinity Episcopal Church where Father John Pitzer kindly allowed them to read the vows they'd each written before the formal vows were exchanged. Their motto "through thick and thick" popped up in both of their writings, and there wasn't a dry eye in the room.

Jed's grandfather left him his wedding band which Kat melted down and redesigned. His grandparents' initials and wedding date are engraved right next to theirs. Kat's "something borrowed" were her great grandmother's rings. "We took time and pride in all the little decisions we could control," says Kat. "It was a perfectly beautiful day."
