FROM THE EDITOR

S ome people have tried and true routines and traditions surrounding how they "do" Mardi Gras. They watch parades from the same spot yearly, swear allegiance to one bakery for king cake, and have their favorite krewes. That's not me. What I love about carnival is that there are endless ways to enjoy it and I like to change it up each year. One year, I costumed and walked in the St. Anne parade through the French Quarter on a sparkling Mardi Gras Day and another was all about the formal viewing stands and private balconies. This year my best friend from childhood rode on the Big Shot float in the Zulu parade, so you can bet I was up at the crack of dawn to catch coconuts, something I hadn't done since college. I also went behind the scenes of one debutante's season, another thing I hadn't done since my Tulane days. All of the moving pieces and parts —dressmakers, caterers, designers, artists, and musicians —were exciting to see fast at work with so much creativity. This is one talented city and I'm already thinking about how I want to experience Mardi Gras next year. Buddha and Shiva Lotus and Dragon Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Having a Ball

FINERY AND FESTIVITIES IN A DEBUTANTE YEAR

by katy danos

W hen one of my closest friend's niece, Kelly Batt, started to talk about her upcoming debutante season, I jumped at the chance to go behind the scenes and down my own memory lane. You see, when I was in college, my part time jobs included working for the top party planner and dress designers of the day. Although my duties primarily included addressing invitations, scheduling fittings, and organizing fabrics and trim, the many layers of craft, commerce, and artistry involved in these businesses completely captured my imagination. It was amazing to see a creative party theme come to fruition after months of detailed planning, and I

have yet to tire of seeing a bolt of fragile fabric become a once in a lifetime gown.

In Kelly, I had a kindred spirit: she loves art, fashion, family, and tradition. I knew that joining her at dress fittings, parties, and day of the ball preparations would give me a perfect vantage point for seeing how "things are done today." With great excitement, I can say that this facet of Mardi Gras is as stunning and imaginative as ever. Our city is bursting with talent. My bird's eye view of one debutante's season confirms what I already knew: there is truly no place like New Orleans.

L ike all debutantes across the city, Kelly required a wardrobe of white presentation dresses to carry her through the season. With some gowns already on hand —her Sacred Heart graduation dress and two from her sister Bailey —and several new ones in the design pipeline, Kelly's rolling rack of white dresses was in great working order. But to reign as queen of The Achaeans? Now that she could not just pull out of the closet! Her mother Andrée turned to couture dressmaker Suzanne Perron St. Paul to create a masterful work of art befitting of carnival royalty.

I loved watching this dress go from concept to sketch to draping to final beadwork. And I'm not the only one who

wanted to jump into Kelly's fun season. Her Uncle Bryan Batt knows a thing or two about costumes and fashion, and soon they were all in deep collaboration. As Suzanne explains, "Both Bryan and Kelly are fashion-forward, unique, and of the moment in their aesthetic. Kelly wanted a dress with a fashion edge that captured her personality and sense of style. Bryan suggested the feather and plume motif and we were off and running." "Kelly has always loved art and drawing so the idea of a quill or feather was a natural fit," says Bryan. "Feathers are all over the runway and I knew that Kelly would love the sense of movement and weightlessness. The Achaeans' captain,

your arm?" are all asked and answered. Kelly was beaming in the muslin gown, and I knew from my experience of working in a couture studio that if she felt this good now, just wait until the frock was in its real fabric and fully bedazzled! At this meeting, Suzanne also carefully placed paper feathers created from custom artwork in various positions on the dress, so that refinements could be made to the pattern. When she showed us the array of beads that would be used for each appliqué, we all swooned. The finished appliqués were three-dimensional and breathtaking —a nod to Suzanne's design expertise. Kelly's finished garment (which you will see later in this issue) stood for everything I remembered: luscious fabrics, a beehive of activity in the sewing rooms, and palpable excitement over that very first snip of the actual fabric. Snip, snip, hooray.

The silhouette of the dress was decided —a soft trumpet with a sweetheart neckline —and Suzanne sketched out her vision of how she would embellish the dress with plume-shaped beaded appliqués and airy ostrich feathers. The idea of an ombré hem came to Suzanne as a way to tie Kelly's dress to the rose gold accents in the organization's existing mantle. Kelly's measurements were taken and Suzanne began to construct the design from the inside out. She's known for her boned foundations and meticulous fit, something Kelly could sense when we went to her first fitting. Long before the first cut of the gown's actual fabric is ever made, a muslin prototype is created for the first fitting in order to work out precise details. Questions like "Can this be a little higher?" to "What happens if you raise

CHAPTER II with flying colors

K elly's couture experience continued at noted costume and dress designer Kathleen Van Horn's atelier. Known for her love of color and passion for fashion history, Kathleen was the perfect choice to create party dresses and ball gowns for both Kelly and Andrée. Walking into Kathleen's studio is like walking into a candy shop. Bolts of dreamy fabrics line the walls and her treasure trove of vintage buttons, ribbons, and embellishments reflects her endless creativity. I could spend hours studying her vast collection of Barbie dolls sporting detailed custom dresses from every fashion era

and poring over her drawers and drawers of rhinestones, baubles, and bugle beads.

Kelly's "big soirée" was planned with three other debutantes and they each envisioned attire that would follow the chosen theme of The Four Seasons. "We all gathered at a coffee shop to draw from a hat," Kelly explains. "I picked Autumn and wanted to try my best to incorporate the season into my dress. I love color so I immediately ruled out the browns of Fall. At Promenade, Kathleen found a beautiful double faced silk taffeta in persimmon and melon that captures all things Fall to me."

24

ADORE • MARCH 2020

With Christian Dior as a muse and the Mad Men era as inspiration, Bryan, Kathleen, Kelly, and her mom had a blast creating the shirred cocktail dress with an oversized puffed out bow and train in the back. Leaves fabricated out of both sides of the taffeta were scattered on one shoulder, mimicking falling autumn leaves. A cornucopia of foliage was fixed to the center of the back poof with a vintage button and ribbon. Everything about this party dress spelled fun —the pop of color, the exaggerated bow, and the decidedly retro vibe. Kathleen also custom designed the ballgown that Andrée wore to The Achaeans ball the night of Kelly's reign (seen in our final chapter). It was one of the prettiest dresses I saw all season and more importantly, it exemplifies everything I love about couture dressmaking. At retail, you may find a full length long dress in a shape you love (don't get me started on necklines and sleeves), but often the color

options are limited to safe neutrals or black. That's just not going to fly in New Orleans. Mardi Gras balls are all about festive palettes and exuberant hues. On one of his fabric hunts, Bryan found an unusual moss green embroidered and beaded lace and a matching silk charmeuse at Promenade Fine Fabrics on St. Charles Avenue. Andrée's favorite color is green, so he knew this would make his sister-in-law's heart sing. And with that, Andrée was soon donning the exquisite ball gown that Kathleen created specifically for her and this special occasion.

Promenade Fine Fabrics, founded in 1968, is one of those locally owned family businesses that New Orleaneans hold dear. For over fifty years, designers, seamstresses, and costume creators have sourced French laces, Asian silks, and ornate brocades at this legendary shop on St. Charles Avenue. Masquerade balls and carnival couture is sure to keep this shop flourishing for many years to come.

K elly and her friends Lydia Calhoun, Lindsey Gibert, and Meredith Mentz were fêted by their parents at a large-scale soirée last December. The themed shindig —The Four Seasons —was planned and produced by Susan Zackin, the award-winning founder and creative director of Z Event Company. With New Orleans- size extended families and daughters at four different colleges, the guest list of relatives and friends easily topped 1,200. But with Susan's savvy choice of the venue and clever use of the floorplan, the party felt personal and welcoming. The fabulous invitation was directly inspired by the Art Nouveau movement made popular by Alphonse Mucha in Prague during the early 1900s. "We crafted all original artwork representing each girl with seasonal florals," Margaret Jones of Scriptura explains. "Irises for Spring, tropical plants for Summer, Fall leaves for Autumn, and icicles and a snowy owl for Winter." Comprised of six panels held together with a tassel, the elegant invitation opened and shut to form a working fan, harkening back to the elaborate style of early carnival ball invitations. I loved the nod to a style that was popular in New Orleans at the dawn of the 20th century.

Susan is known for her invaluable expertise in pairing the right venue with the right event, no matter how large or small. Honestly, a myriad of mistakes and hurdles are easily avoided with this professional insight from the get- go. I'd never been to the Fillmore, so I couldn't wait to see how Susan would deliver all the desired elements. And deliver she did! The Four Seasons party was fun for all ages and that's no easy feat. With swanky chandeliers and sconces already in place, Susan expanded on the existing retro vibe by adding multiple seating and lounge areas with a focused lighting plan that amped up the glamour. Each of the girl's moms decorated a seasonal dining table, providing a perfect perch for grandparents. People watching could not have been better than in the theatre setting. The menu featured summer foods such as an interactive s'mores station and a luxe hot dog bar with all the fixings. Cold-weather favorites included gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and roast beef po-boys on Leidenheimer bread. Passed hors d'oeuvres flowed all night with a fun mix of standards like fried oysters, new things like duck poppers,

30

ADORE • MARCH 2020

By using Scriptura's custom art throughout the venue and lots of interesting lanterns and candlelight, the décor was elegant and cohesive. Live music in the lounge allowed for a more intimate spot to gather, and in the main room, the dance floor was on fire.

and a late night pass of beef sliders, french fries, and beignets. By strategically placing additional stations —a hibachi grill, a charcuterie grazing table, and an array of sweets —throughout the venue, it never felt crowded which made the dining component of the party a top-notch food experience. Party On The Moon, one of the most sought after party bands in the country, exceeded all expectations while performing in this concert hall with state of the art sound.

Masters at reading the crowd, the band had everyone on the dance floor all night long...and I mean everyone. It was planned that Kelly's Uncle Bryan would sing Build Me Up Buttercup with the band and that all four girls would hop on stage for some big disco numbers. But it was completely spontaneous that the band leader asked Bryan to sing the last song of the night and everyone joined in. "It was totally organic," Susan explains. "It's not something that you can plan. One thousand partygoers singing along to Piano Man …well, that was surely unforgettable." I totally agree.

O ne of Kelly's favorite parties of the season was the New Year's Eve brunch held in her honor at Galatoire's. I have to say, it was one of my favorites too. It was simple, relaxed, and personal. There was something extremely festive about enjoying a French Quarter balcony on a sparkling New Year's Eve day, when normally my focus would be only about the big night ahead. And I wasn't alone in welcoming a laid-back party at the end of the busy holiday season. I know that Kelly enjoyed the breather and the quality time with high school friends who she doesn't get to see as often now that they are all off to college. The highlight of the brunch was the array of head turning headpieces made by Bryan. "The glittery hats were Uncle B's idea," says Kelly. "He is so talented. The glitz and glam headpieces he made were the talk of the day. Bailey helped coordinate the hats with each girl's dress. It made the party all the more unique and special. Where else would this ever happen, but New Orleans?" too seriously. Some of the best and most enjoyable parties celebrate our hometown, complete with fanciful homemade quirk. These headpieces definitely brought it. Creations of leftover Christmas tinsel, wacky pipe cleaners, and feathers in every hue were conversation starters and party favors all rolled into one. I had to move fast to get the hat I wanted, but I'm not going to name names. What goes on at Galatoire's stays at Galatoire's. On the menu were the restaurant's famous soufflé potatoes and a grits bar with an assortment of toppings such as cheese, grillades, and shrimp. Libations included bloody marys, milk punch, and a signature cocktail called "Kelly Bird," a play on the Yellow Bird cocktail that she loves. The lively brunch featured a jazz band and a second line, and guests tossed beads to passersby from the balcony. Regular New Orleans things. But as Kelly says best, "This can't be experienced anywhere else. Tradition and culture mean so much to the city. I've learned that even more this year. New Orleans is truly special."

Photos by Josh Brasted

I definitely had the year would be like. But this went beyond my expectations. The entire year was so much fun and I appreciate New Orleans and all of its traditions even more than I already did. - KELLY BATT insight from my sister about what

T he queen's at-home reception before the ball has always been my favorite event. It's where my two worlds would often meet: my party planning job had me bustling about making sure that everything went off without a hitch, and the dress designers that I worked for would be on hand to dress the queen. I couldn't wait to go behind the scenes at Jay and Andrée's beautiful home the day of The Achaeans ball. For Kelly's party, Andrée hired Patti Constantin to design and cater the event. "Patti is just so creative," she explains. "It's food art. After going over the basics such as color and theme, I give her free reign. It's fun watching what she creates." It sure was! I arrived early to watch Patti and her team cart in magnolia branches and fresh flowers along with all of the food planned for the main dining room table. She had some serveware with her, but her unique talent is creating custom tablescapes by using the client's own silver and decorative objects. I giggled when I saw her on a step ladder rooting around through Jay and Andrée's cabinets. And just as the first guests were arriving, Patti put finishing touches on a

stunning array of artisanal breads and cheeses, fresh fruit and roasted nuts, and lace cookies and white chocolate truffles. The aqua and gold-leafed macarons were the pièce de résistance. By mid-afternoon, it was time for hair and makeup. We sipped a little champagne as Stephanie Gaylord transformed Kelly's long blown out tresses into an intricate updo. Knowing her as well as I do, I knew that Kelly was pleased with this regal hairdo. It was formal for sure, but it also had just the right amount of kick and playfulness in its volume. And before we knew it, Suzanne had arrived with the dress. Kelly was dazzling in her gown. Truly dazzling. The soft silver fabric was overlaid with tulle embroidered with shimmery paillettes and the beaded feather appliqués seem to float to the ground. Suzanne had ombré-dyed the hem of the dress and attached each feathery ostrich plume by hand. Try as I might, I can't imagine ever having the courage to dip this delicate fabric in dye. Since the last fitting, Swarovski crystals had been added to the dress, delicately outlining each appliqué. I loved this whimsical touch.

I loved spending so much time with my family doing such creative things. It was exciting to come home from college to do things that only go on here. - Kelly Batt

The Queen's personal ball favor, a gold pin in the shape of a quill, decorated frames for her court, and Bryan's rendering of her dress on a decoupage tray were all part of the plume boom. At the Queen's Supper, friends went home with Kelly green Tervis tumblers to commemorate the occasion.

Of course, there was royal jewelry. Kelly wanted to wear the crown that her sister wore as queen of Athenians in order to start a family tradition. Moans Couture, the New York jeweler that designed the crown, simply replaced the original aqua center stone with a clear one and Kelly was good to go. Moans also designed the plume-inspired necklace and pear-shaped drop earrings. Just as it was time to head downstairs to start receiving guests, Kelly darted into her bathroom for "one last thing." I knew exactly what she was doing. Referencing her late paternal grandmother, she said "I'm putting on Mimi's favorite perfume. That way she'll be with me all night." This reception is just for women and allows guests to visit with the queen in a more intimate setting. Hors d'oeuvres such as fried Des Allemands catfish and beef tenderloin bites were passed as Kelly greeted a steady stream of guests. The little girls from next door that Kelly babysits were priceless in their party finery as they chatted with her majesty. I loved Bailey's strapless petal pink ball gown

made by Lizzie Allen Hotard of Elizabeth Allen Bespoke and was equally excited to see a new young designer on the fashion scene. Caroline Kavanaugh, Campbell Drennan, Lindsey Gibert, Mignon Daly, Charlotte Friend, and Helen Mason were beautiful maids in the court, each with their own unique takes on sparkling ball attire.

The magical evening was capped with dancing and merriment at the Queen's Supper. This marked the end of my behind the scenes look at Kelly's carnival revelry, but not the end of my enthusiasm for the history and future of couture dressmaking and creative party design. In a city that honors food, music, tradition, and celebrations, New Orleans is teeming with talent like never before! Laissez le bon temps rouler.

And just like that, the limousines arrived to whisk the debutantes and their mothers off to the ball and tableau.

W e've found ourselves craving a vacation this Spring and it seems like everyone agrees. Runways were stamped with flora and fauna inspired by lush islands and forests, and home décor trends leaned towards all things tropical. Paradise is certainly found in this season's exotic and lively style.

inside the new

by Michaela Bechler | photos by Denny Culbert JEWEL OF THE SOUTH

W hen Jewel of the South first opened in March 2019 on the edge of the French Quarter, its owners were already looking ahead to its next phase. Occupying the first floor of an early 19th century Creole cottage, the cocktail spot created by New Orleans bartending sensations Chris Hannah and Nick Detrich, underwent a considerable transformation. Within its first year, Hannah, Detrich, and business partner John Stubbs unveiled the new Jewel of the South, a restaurant located upstairs, and The Grove, a cozy 32-seat lounge serving classic and craft cocktails alongside light bar bites on the first floor.

While expanding from bar to restaurant was always the intent, the building itself required more time and work than anticipated. Working within just 2,000 square feet, the owners turned to Trapolin-Peer Architects to create the drinking and dining destination they were envisioning. "We wanted it to be a space that was brooding, but not overly masculine," Detrich explained. Maintaining the historical aspect was also important: the original Jewel of the South was a famous 19th century New Orleans saloon, operated by Joseph Santini (who Detrich describes as underrated). The owners wanted to do justice to Santini and his establishment.

ADORE • MARCH 2020 57

The new layout and offerings first opened to the public in late January: a lush courtyard leading to the Grove, which includes Louis XIV style benches and a backbar from Wales made in 1880. Ascending the staircase, guests will happen upon the new 40-seat dining room that respects the history of the building, with Art Deco details throughout and unique accessories displayed. Detrich says the new layout —tavern below and the dining room upstairs —is a multi-story indoor-outdoor space with something for everyone. The British-meets-Cajun restaurant is helmed by chef de cuisine Philip Whitmarsh and features a rotating menu of "refined tavern food," Detrich says. Starters include Bone Marrow Crème (with caviar and madeleines) and a classic Burrata. Vegetarians will be pleased with many plant-centric dishes including Charred Bibb with lovage, cucumber, and jalapeno, and Salt Baked Celeriac with parmesan, chives, and crunchies. Cocktails are served

tableside with a roaming cart showcasing select spirits. If wine is more your style, Detrich's program focuses on low intervention technique during production. If you're visiting the Grove for a quality beverage, you're in luck! Both Detrich and Hannah are acclaimed bartenders —Detrich was formerly a managing partner and bartender at Cane & Table and Cure, while Hannah led the Arnaud's French 75 bar to a James Beard Award during his 14- year residency. Hannah mans the bar with signatures like the French 75 and Jewel Sazerac made with bonded rye, Matifoc Rancio Sec, and Herbsaint. Sophisticated snacks like Croquettes and Scotch Egg are available, as well as a full charcuterie program. The Grove also offers the Brandy Crusta, a 19th century cocktail created by Santini at the original bar. The beverage was one of the first to include fresh citrus and was resurrected by Hannah in the mid-2000s. Today, it sits prominently on their cocktail menu. Full circle, right?
