I grimaced recently when the preacher announced that his church was “hiring” an assistant minister. It’s a pet peeve of mine. Churches don’t hire people to fill staff positions, rather, they call them.Technically speaking, God actually does the calling, graciously including praying people in on the process. We examined Elijah’s call in chapter one. He was just a normal person like you and me, available and influential, ready to represent God before a wayward people.Yet he was just one man. Someone else would have to serve as prophet once Elijah left this earth and that person would be Elisha. You may be considering skimming or skipping this chapter, thinking you’ll never serve in some sort of “official” ministerial capacity.Yet, the Bible teaches that God places a call on the life of every believer. It may not be as a missionary to a foreign land or to a specific church staff position, yet it’s authentic nonetheless. If you truly are His child, God has a job that needs to be done, with your
