“Look! Water!”
“What prevents me from being baptized?” (Acts 8:36).
I
n case you’re wondering, at the end of his discussion with Philip, the Ethiopian spotted water and wanted to be baptized. Philip answered, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” The official answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God” (Acts 8:37). Philip then ordered the chariot to stop, after which they went to the water where he baptized him. This encounter supports the first of eight principles I’d like to address in this chapter: Baptism follows salvation. We see this confirmed when Philip ministered in Samaria. “But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike” (Acts 8:12). This is a key issue in the area of baptism, especially as it relates to the following: Infant baptism— Although there is no biblical precedent for it, some Christian denominations baptize babies. This does not qualify as scriptural baptism because infants have not reached an age of
