Promised Land the Israelites again found themselves thirsty and without water. Despite being instructed by God to “speak to the rock” this time in order for it to bring forth water, an agitated Moses struck it twice with his rod instead. (Exodus 17:6, Numbers 20:8). And even though the water flowed freely, Moses paid a huge price for his disobedience, with the Lord saying to him and Aaron, “Be- cause you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them” (Numbers 20:12). In fact, Moses died before they ever crossed the Jordan. Much has been said and written about the life of Dwight D. Eisenhower over the last several decades. What most people don’t know, however, is that Eisenhower had an explosive temper as a child. On one occasion when his parents did not let him do some- thing with his older brothers, he flew into a rage, running outside and pounding his fists into the trunk of an apple tree. The next thing he knew, his father whipped him and sent him to his room. Soon after that, his mother came in, dressed the wounds on this hands, then recited, “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty” (Proverbs 16:32).The lad must have taken the counsel to heart, going on to command a powerful army inWWII, then becoming 34 th President of the United States. Do not open the door and welcome the devil in your life by holding on to your anger. If you do, it’s likely to develop into some- thing worse, as you’ll see in the next chapter.
