S everal years ago an “Apathy Club” was formed on a college campus.The officers of the club advertised a meeting of the membership. Sadly, no one showed up. Explanation: They were too apathetic to attend. This brings to mind the story of a Finnish atheist who stated in his will that he wanted to leave his farm to the devil.When the man died, the legal system was unsure how to fulfill his wishes. Eventual- ly, after lengthy deliberation, the court decided that the best way to grant the farmer’s request was to let the weeds and brush take over the land, to cease maintaining the house, and to let the soil erode and wash away – declaring in its ruling, “The best way to let the dev- il have possession of anything is to do nothing.”This lines up squarely with these words from 18 th Century Irish statesman Edmund Burke, who said: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” 78 Building on these words, let’s march forward into a discus-
