full-on color block party, there are definite color palettes this season for every fashion fancy. On the super saturated end of the spectrum there's sunshine yellow, cobalt blue, carrot orange, and cherry tomato red. THE BRUNCH BUNCH Three neighborhoods, three takes on everyone's favorite meal

By missy wilkinson | Photos by leslie gamboni

B runch's palate-tingling combination of sweet and savory flavors, cocktails, and convivial vibes are all reasons why the hybrid meal has taken off in recent years. But according to Joey Worley, director of food and beverage at the Windsor Court Hotel, brunch is popular because it’s the ultimate indulgence. "If you're going to brunch, it

THE GRILL ROOM AT WINDSOR COURT

300 Gravier St.

Old World aesthetics meet Cajun-Creole cuisine at the Windsor Court's Grill Room, where lush flower arrangements, marble floors, and museum-caliber 17th-century art contribute to the opulent feel. And if luxurious surroundings don't make diners feel like royalty, a fully customizable brunch menu does. You won't find rigid, fixed-price offerings here. A range of small, large, and shared plates, all heavy on the local seafood and produce, allows diners to pick and choose what they want — and wash it all down with strawberry mimosas with their choice of Champagne. Live music by the Christopher Kohl trio and a "bubble bay" with eight Bellini varieties (mango, black current, and orange, to name a few) keep the mood convivial.

indicates you're going to have a fun couple of hours at the brunch itself, and the rest of the day is probably going to be fun as well," Worley said. "You don't have a lot of other responsibilities — you've gotten the yard mowed, and you’re going to go to brunch, have cocktails, enjoy yourself, and see where the day takes you."

THE COUNTRY CLUB 624 Louisa St.

Head to this yellow, Italianate center hall cottage on any weekend morning and you'll find seersucker- and sundress-clad bridal parties, frat brothers, families, and tourists spilling across a manicured front lawn. Inside the mural-painted dining rooms diners pack the tables and bar for Saturday's loud, festive drag brunch, which books out months in advance. Its popularity is one reason The Country Club recently expanded their offerings to include a Sunday brunch in the verdant back courtyard. "(Sunday brunch) is a little bit more accessible for locals," said Cameron Eaton, director of marketing and public relations at The Country Club. "Our drag brunch had become so popular that it was hard for our neighborhood friends to come and eat." Contemporary American with a Creole twist, the ever-shifting menu features dishes including crispy green grilled tomatoes served with poached eggs, tomato butter, and hollandaise sauce. There's also rum baba topped with fresh strawberries, whipped crème fraiche, and pistachio anglaise. A variety of Champagnes provide a crisp counterpoint to these flavors. If you're too full to move after brunch, stick around and make a day of it: a $15 cover gives you access to the Country Club’s pool, hot tub, and sauna, and happy hour with $3 well drinks starts at 4 p.m.

APPOLINE

4729 Magazine St.

Brunch is the perfect way to kick off a lazy Sunday fun day — unless you work in hospitality, the medical field, film, or any other industry where weekends often land in the middle of the week. Fortunately, Apolline offers brunch Tuesday through Sunday.

"A lot of people who have to work during the weekends are excited that we run the same brunch six days a week," said Keith Andrews, owner of Apolline.

The intimate, modern-yet-cozy vibe at this converted double shotgun complements its Louisiana contemporary brunch fare. Country-fried chicken thigh is the perfect topper for a maple butter, maple syrup, and powdered sugar- topped waffle. The meal is made complete with a potent Bloody Mary that combines two shots of vodka, housemade mix, bacon, a biscuit, boiled shrimp, spicy beans, okra, olives, celery, lemon, and lime. Flavorful dishes such as the avocado toast (which layers multigrain bread with smashed avocado, smoked salmon, capers, pickled shallots, and yogurt) don't land as heavy as some savory brunch classics can.

"We achieve a lot of flavors with spices and smoking things, rather than cream and butter," Andrews said.

she cleverly reframes in antique frames scored at tag sales or giltwood frames from Michael’s during double coupon days. One of her favorites is a portrait of her Aunt made at the L.A. County Fair in 1965. Routine antique scouting day trips to Scott, near Lafayette, yield side chairs, a buffet, Bern pottery, and an eclectic roundup of kitchen and serving pieces reminiscent of simpler times. Joy hosts The Bakehouse workshops, classes, and special events all year long. The upcoming calendar is brimming with inspired seasonal classes such as Louisiana strawberry pie making, a crawfish beignet pop-up, and a make and eat brunch workshop that will make your mouth water just thinking about it. The Bakehouse is also perfect for bachelorette parties or neighbors’ night out where you roll

Every inch of the house oozes with innate style and crafty finds making the whole setting congruent with her philosophy on baking, food presentation, and the comforts of just out of the oven goodness. Her home is decorated with a clever mix of estate sale finds, commissioned pieces, and big-box items artfully arranged with personal touches and a lifetime of collecting cool stuff. The dramatic sinker cypress dining room table with a burnished steel base and thick open shelving in the kitchen were fabricated by GoodWood Nola; the vintage armchairs upholstered in beefy black linen were purchased at The Sunday Shop on Magazine Street. My goal is to share my passion for baking and teach people the skills needed to be confident in the kitchen. My parents taught me and I like to think of my workshops more like pep talks!" Lately, Joy has hand made the most beautiful flowers from colorful crepe paper that she says is a great form of relaxation. Each blossom requires about three to seven hours to complete depending on the bloom and she is well on her way to a fantastic art installation on her living room wall – one posey at a time. Joy's kitchen is the heart of her home. Hard-working Kitchenaid appliances, a well-loved and used marble island, and mixing bowls, pans, and pottery dot every surface. "Everything has to be functional. Nothing is a prop," says Joy. “I love good glass mixing bowls in every size and my pottery is beautiful and can multitask." ON CAKE Drake "What a time to be alive"

Drake On Cake, a wildly popular instagram account, is Joy’s brainchild. Plucking some of the rapper’s most poetic lyrics from his songbook, she writes the words in icing on simply frosted layer cakes that she then gets camera-ready for their moment in the spotlight. “My fastest growing workshop right now is Drake on Cake. Everyone pulls a lyric from a bowl, we listen to Drake, sip champagne and everyone learns how to pipe icing and decorate their cakes before we photograph each masterpiece,” beams Joy. “We have a brilliant time gathered in my kitchen!”

SOUTHERN CHARM FOR YOUR TABLETOP

B eatriz Ball, New Orleans designer and owner of the award-winning pewterware tabletop and home accessories company that bears her name, started her business in 1991 in the outskirts of Mexico City. Her innovative designs, handmade by skilled artisans in an especially lustrous alloy of mixed metals, quickly gained popularity nationwide, especially with modern brides. Today, many of the original artists are still with the company, the foundry hums, and Bea has added several "of the moment" materials to her repertoire such as melamine, acrylic, and tropical wood. The fact that her

pieces never tarnish, are as durable as they are attractive, look so fabulous as art objects, and multitask in function lands them at the top of consummate entertainer wish lists and on bridal registries across the county. Bea lives in a classic center hall architectural gem of a house in the lower Garden District that she shares with her husband Bo. With a kitchen renovation and an addition by Michael Carbine, the home gained casual dining and lounging spaces that open to a lovely brick patio and courtyard garden. It's the perfect setup for Bea who loves to

entertain their children and grandchildren in that relaxed way that makes indoor/outdoor living so wonderful in the South. The house was built in 1840 and, in the twenty years that the Ball's have been owners, it has seen its fair share of kids, meals, and happy get togethers. Her pewterware collection features strong sculptural and sophisticated organic shapes. Each piece is created using the ancient art of sand casting and is hand polished to a rich patina. Banana leaf trays, mid-century inspired bowls, and party tubs all do double time as centerpieces, ice buckets, and snack bowls; they all look fantastic as distinctive decor when not in service. Bea's new line of melamine is based on her best-selling pewter shapes presented in mix and matchable summer shades perfect for al fresco dining. Toss in acrylic barware pretty enough

On this sunny late afternoon, Bea's daughter-in-law, Shelley, and her granddaughter, Isabel, both in the company fold, were among the guests at an easy breezy staff meeting filled with marketing ideas, product testing (hello new wine goblets), and endless tips for presenting customers with stylish ways to use the many pieces they've collected over time. Bea arranged simple grocery store flowers and backyard greenery in a pedestal bowl turned centerpiece and set the table with colorful glasses and acrylic barware, perfect to take outside. Using a mix of melamine trays and bowls and a stunning Tzalam lazy susan loaded with cheeses, the spread was so inviting and in keeping with Bea's confident flair.

It's fun to buy wedding gifts that brides will not only treasure but that will also yield a multitude of uses for each distinctive piece, including decorating their first homes. And finding melamine platters and cake stands that have as much personality as their ceramic counterparts makes breaking out the "good stuff" an everyday occurrence!

Flowers Take Centerstage Florists TO THE FIELD

F or flower lovers, foodies, and off-the-beaten- path travelers, Florists To The Fields , written by Christian Owens, is the book of the season. Preeminent floral designers Greg Campbell and Erick New, known for their nature-chic boutique, Garden District, in Memphis, visited their favorite specialty growers across the country spotlighting the passion and boundless energy of the floriculture industry. The concept was ambitious – hit the fields in each location, pluck materials straight from the garden, and create spectacular events in situ that would capture the personality and majesty of each landscape. The book is a feast for the senses with stunning photography of luxurious blossoms, colorful palettes, and decorative inspiration on every page. For over twenty five years, Greg and Erick have provided choice blooms, flawless bouquets, andmasterful centerpieces for milestones and special occasions of all kinds. Known for

their unparalleled artistry and imaginative installations, their devotion to seasonal color, fresh florals, and lush textures has forged great relationships with the farmers and plant breeders that supply their precious inventory. Throughout the book, readers share the journey firsthand with inside peeks into the process of gathering available greenery and blooms at each farm and translating the bounty into original and distinctive celebrations. Menu ideas, tablescapes, and local culture are included in the joyful stories about each grower and farm event. Covey Rise Farms in Husser, which is right outside of Hammond, is beautifully featured in the final chapter of the book. Known for their specialty vegetables that top chefs in the area design menus around and their world-class hunting lodge, the focus on the flora and fauna brings new insight into the busy, not-so-little farm. At the Covey Rise farm to table dinner, the designers used orange and yellow marigolds, naturally striped gourds, duck decoys, and early

T here's power in the imperfection of woodsy grain, nubby linen, and rustic, handcrafted, woven materials. Simple lines, fresh looks, and the neutral colors of natural stone, raffia, and horn calm the spirit and breathe new life into any decor. Whether your decor is traditional or modern, collecting vessels, baskets, and pillows that celebrate natural substances is a great way to recharge your look for the season.

Summer

in the city

By liz joyce

L ight on the travel plans this spring and summer? Lucky for you, the vibrant arts scene inNewOrleans offers plenty of opportunities for entertainment. Plus, with amazing hotels and world-class restaurants, you can plan a relaxing staycation in your own city. For Saturday fun, stroll through the open-air Arts Market at Palmer Park and let the unique pieces catch your eye. Here you’ll find everything from handmade clothing and jewelry to photography and ceramics. Held on the last Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., this gathering of local artists is accompanied by live music and local food vendors. Gather your friends and make a day of it! Cinco de Mayo plans? Jammin’ on Julia, the annual festival benefitting the Arts District New Orleans, falls on Saturday, May 5th this year. Live painters, public sculptures, and a light project installation by Brennan Steele will line the 300-500 blocks of Julia Street. With a bar on each block, live music, and local gallery art, festival-goers can expect a spirited atmosphere at this free-admission event.

art, and performances. Speaking of performances, you can catch The Nola Project’s production of The Three Musketeers at the sculpture garden between May 9th and May 27th. The local ensemble will be performing a humorous adaptation by playwright Pete McElligott. While you’re at the museum, be sure to check out the Lee Friedlander American Musicians exhibit. Best known for his work with Atlantic Records, Lee Friedlander took promotional portraits from the mid- 1950s through the 1970s, resulting in a number of album covers for various music genres. In between all the art-going, plan a staycation in your own city. Check into the Windsor Court Hotel for an elegant retreat and use their Suite Spring promotion that includes a $50 credit per night towards food, beverages, parking, or spa services. Make a point to visit the hotel’s new pool bar. A nod to the centuries old bar outside Windsor Castle, Waterman’s Pool Side Bar is the perfect place to grab a local beer or frozen drink while enjoying the rooftop pool and deck. If you’re limited on vacation days or just feel like staying at home this summer, rest easy. An art-filled adventure in your own city awaits.

Visit the New Orleans Museum of Art this summer. Perfect for date night, Friday Nights at NOMA feature live music,
