CHAPTER FIVE
EXPLORING NEW POETRY FORMATS:
At Poetry Break, participants also explore various poetry formats. One exciting workshop focused on the Haiku, a traditional Japanese form characterized by its 5-7-5 syllable structure. Taught by volunteer William G. McLeod, the Haiku is a popular choice among poets, not only for its simplicity but also for the challenge it presents—capturing vivid imagery and deep emotions within a limited framework. Here are three reasons why writing Haikus can be especially beneficial: 1. Enhances Brevity: The Haiku format teaches poets to express their thoughts concisely, refining their abi l ity to communicate powerful messages with minimal words. 2. Promotes Mindfulness: Writing Haikus encourages poets to observe and appreciate the small details in their surroundings, fostering a greater connection to nature and the world around them. 3. Evokes Emotion: By capturing fleeting moments, Haikus can powerfully resonate with readers, leaving lasting impressions that evoke reflection and feeling.
