SUPERINTENDENT
STEVE BARNETTE Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! I want to thank you for all the support you provide our schools and the students of Paulding County. I would also like to thank our athletes, coaches, boosters, and families for their commitment to our extracurricular programs. Through extracurricular athletics our students have
a platform where they can demonstrate their skills and talents, and in many ways the life lessons they gain, and the bonds they form, are a perfect complement to the academic instruction they receive in the classroom. The vision of the Paulding County School District is to “Prepare students for success, today and tomorrow,” and extracurricular activities are a vital component of that preparation. Studies have shown that students who learn the lessons of competition along with the structure and discipline of being part of a team, often have a head start on attaining success later in life. Extracurricular activities also help build a sense of community and can play a major role in the culture of a school. Good sportsmanship is a combination of responsibilities, attitudes, and behaviors that demon strate respect, integrity, and fairness in sports and competition. Here are a few reminders on responsibilities and respect. Responsibility. Acknowledge mistakes and take responsibility for your actions, whether positive or negative. Encourage and support teammates, understanding that individual success is tied to the success of the team. Lead by example, inspiring others with your dedication, hard work, and sportsmanship both on and off the field. A good sportsman represents their school in a positive light, understanding that their actions on and off the field reflect on the institution they belong to. Prioritize the safety of all participants and avoid overly aggressive or reckless behavior that may lead to injury. Respect. Show respect toward your opponent regardless of the outcome of the competition. Display humility in victory, avoiding excessive celebration or gloating. Similarly, show resilience and dignity in defeat, accept the results with composure and as a learning opportunity. Respect the authority of coaches and officials, communicating disagreements with civility. Respect the rules and adhere to the spirit of the game. Never cheat, intentionally break the rules, or try to gain an unfair advantage over your opponent. Thank you again for your support, and I hope that all our students and their families have a wonderful 2023-2024 school year!
Sincerely,
Steve Barnette Superintendent
PRINCIPAL EDWARD R. THOMAS
Thank you so much for supporting our fall program. We are excited about kicking off this year and know our students and fall program participants are as well. We have so many positives that occur daily on campus, it is excellent that this booklet showcases some of that positivity. I would like to thank all those that participate and are a part of our programs as well as
those that support them. Thank you to those that have helped produce this publication and those that have and are supporting this publication. We have an amazing community that expects excellence, and we are excited anytime we have the opportunity to display that excellence. I have been in education since 2004. Newly out of Florida A & M University with a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Education, I began my educational career in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida at Palm Beach Gardens High School. After a rewarding yet brief stint in Florida teaching Theatre and Reading, I was led to South Paulding High School where I continued my educational and professional growth. I am a proud “ground breaker” of South Paulding High School and have been here since it opened its doors to the youth of Paulding County in 2006. I enjoyed multiple years of teaching 9th Grade Literature and coaching basketball. During this time, I acquired my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of West Georgia. I have been able to serve as an administrator here since 2012. I have been blessed with the opportunity and the responsibility to make a positive impact on SPHS and the surrounding community now in the role of Principal. In addition to my South Paulding family, is my wonderful wife and biggest supporter Cassandra. When not at South we enjoy traveling, socializing with King, our dog, and spending time with family. Education has opened many doors for me and has been a bridge to a plethora of destinations. My hope and passion is to build as many bridges as I can to help those that walk through South Paulding’s doors reach their own meaning and expectations of success.
Ms. Toler is entering her first year as Athletic Director/Assistant Principal at South Paulding High School. She is a native of Mableton, Georgia and has lived in the South Paulding community for the past 20 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood/Special Education from Mercer University, a master’s ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL/ ATHLETIC DIRECTOR SHANNON TOLER
in special education from Capella University, and Tier I Leadership Certificate from University of West Georgia. Ms. Toler is entering her 9th year in education and her 2nd year in administration all of which have been in the Paulding County School District. She began her teaching career at Dugan Elementary where she spent one year teaching 4th grade and three years teaching 5th grade. From there, she moved across campus to South Paulding to serve as an Interrelated English teacher for three years. Ms. Toler has been a coach in the community for the past 20 years. She began her coaching career at New Georgia Ballpark coaching youth cheerleading for the South Paulding Bears. In 2011, she worked with the high school and booster club to rebrand as South Paulding Spartans and transition to have their home field be moved to SPHS. She served as the youth cheerleading director before moving to coach 7th grade cheerleaders for two years. Ms. Toler then coached the JV cheerleaders before taking on the head coach role in 2017 where she stayed until taking the position as an assistant principal in 2022. In addition to her South Paulding family, Ms. Toler has three children. Brianna is a 2017 SPHS graduate, Gracie is a 2022 SPHS graduate, and Luke will walk across the stage in 2030. She loves spending time with family and when not at South, they spend many days at the ballpark watching Luke play baseball or at Life University where Gracie cheers. Ms. Toler has been blessed with the opportunity to make a positive impact on every student that walks through the doors of South Paulding High School. She thrives on community involvement and loves to foster the growth of young athletes. Her goal as athletic director is to facilitate a program of coaches that are all in and committed to the academic and athletic success of our young athletes, as well as mentoring these athletes as productive and positive members of our community.

CROSS COUNTRY COACH
COACH RHONDA KELLEY Hello. I am Coach Kelley. I am the head boys cross country coach for the 2023-2024 season. This is my first season as a cross country coach. This is my 27th year in education and my 9th year at South. I have coached boy’s tennis as well as CoEd Track & Field here at South. I have been both an assistant coach and head coach throughout the years. Overall, this will be my 6th year coaching student athletes.
I have lived in Paulding County for 27 years. My son graduated from South in 2020. My daughter is currently a senior at South. I began coaching at South because my children were involved in sports. I enjoy coaching because I have the privilege of helping my student athletes not only improve their performance but grow and mature as people. With that comes joy.
