5 minute way to get a glove work/digs series with a lot of athletes in a short amount of time. Most people only do this with Infielders, but I believe every athlete can benefit from the coordination. Every athlete must work glove drills in order to handle different types of ground balls, and hops in a game situation. You can vary up the routine on a daily basis, and use the regressions/progressions depending on the individual athlete. Make sure balls are tossed underhand to give the short hop. Overhand toss creates a very steep angle that typically you do not see on ground balls. If you choose to take the more position specific approach make sure you pair like positions together in order to get the most detailed approach to the series. (If you want to keep everyone on the same drill, use time instead of reps) SETUP Partner facing each other about 10 feet apart FOCUS Glove work, Hand Eye Coordination, Ground ball feeds, Glove presentation DRILL Barehand, on knees, still tall Upper body with hip hinge, not sitting on calves. 10 reps 10 reps 10 reps Barehand standing fielding position; 45 degree turn for glove/backhand 10 reps 10 reps 10 reps Glove, standing fielding position; 45 turn for glove/backhand with throw footwork 5 reps 5 reps 5 reps Glove standing fielding position; prep step, field, and footwork 5 reps 5 reps 5 reps 2B,SS,3B Partner Glove Series Middle infielders and third baseman typically get the most glovework during practice, and this progression builds on that. The Throw to first footwork and double play footwork vary depending on position, but it's very important to emphasize putting your body into a good position to make that play. By including this in their warm up they will be able to isolate the move without worrying about the throw, or seeing a runner. This is an easy regression that breaks down the move, and works on them understanding their body position while making these moves. They are the most likely to have to field the ball on the run, and after progressing through this I would personally add in a moving aspect to the glove series. Outfielders don't always get glove work, but they are also the final defense when it comes to baseball, and need to get as much glove work as possible in order to create flow while fielding. Both ways of fielding a groundball with glove/arm foot forward is a great way to expand their toolbox and be able to field more comfortably according to the prep steps for their throw.
