FROM THE EDITOR

S pring is the season of rebirth and new growth, so it is fitting that we shine the light on creative women that nurture and celebrate culture in New Orleans. Their passion is inspiring, and their many ideas for igniting the creative spark within us all helps me recharge and refocus on my own favorite pursuits. In New Orleans, beauty and joy surrounds us, and I love how they take what they see, feel, and hear in our city, filter it through their own lens, and enhance life through self-expression and innovation. It's definitely something to celebrate. And we have so much to look forward to in May — Spring parties and weddings, first dips into the swimming pool, gardening, beach trips, and the annual household refresh. School is almost out, and you can feel the heightened excitement in the air. It's all about fun. In this issue, we feature the clothes, décor, gifts, and goodies that are as happy as we are to greet the warmer months.

Mei -Ling Murray Rees UPTOWN

Dancer, Model, Instructor neworleansballettheatre.com

M ei-Ling is a classical ballet dancer and professional model, originally from Northern California. She spent summers training at American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance and graduated from the University of Arizona. A career in dance diplomacy brought her to Panama and India, working with U.S. embassies to develop international dance programs through the non-profit organization Movement Exchange. Since moving here in 2016, she has performed with New Orleans Ballet Theatre and is a faculty member at Schramel Conservatory of Dance. She is expecting her first child, a boy, any day now. Welcome to the Big Easy.

FAVORITE thing ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS? All of the small, playful interactions that happen with random people you pass by on the street. There is a warmth that Nola residents have that tickles you. There's a levity and joking commentary between you and the grocery store clerk or the busker in the Quarter that puts a smile on your face like no other. It is its own kind of happiness currency. HOW DID THE PANDEMIC INFLUENCE YOUR CREATIVITY? Being in quarantine was a time of slowing down. It helped me be a better friend to my relationships, and it helped me tap into the smaller creative hobbies I had always enjoyed but had never prioritized. I dove into making Hawaiian haku — the traditional woven flower crowns of the islands. I perfected baking sourdough boules and the ultimate chocolate chip cookie. I gardened and played more piano. I had deeper conversations with friends and family who live afar. The whole year was a practice in how to better serve others and how to better utilize the preciousness of time. BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN YOUR WORK? Athletes who have a relentless work ethic. Artists who are driven by curiosity and authentic expression, rather than by imitation or vanity. Humans who constantly strive for connection over competition. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? I've always thought that dance strikes this harmonious balance between athleticism and artistry. And above all, dance has always been a language for me — to connect with others, to get to know other cultures, to exude an emotion, to embody music. Dance checks all those boxes. And being a performing artist is uniquely special in how fleeting it is. To be on stage and give yourself over to the audience just in that moment, only for it never to be exactly that same way again, is an incomparable and exhilarating feeling of presence. FAVORITE QUOTE? "You are the company you keep. So go out there and find the people who make your world larger." Souki Powell

Rachael DePauw BROADMOOR Artist, Potter rachaeldepauw.com R achael, originally from St. Louis, Missouri, found her passion for pottery while fulfilling a required arts credit during her junior year at

why NEW ORLEANS? I moved to New Orleans to attend Tulane University to study engineering. That area of study didn't last long. I randomly took a wheel-throwing class and I just fell in love with the medium of clay. I apprenticed with Alex Williams from Potsalot Pottery on Magazine Street, and he showed me how to make a living as an artist. New Orleans was such a fertile place to start a career as a craft artist, and so many years later, I'm still here! WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? That's certainly been a challenge while raising three young children during a pandemic. I've had little time to nurture myself creatively, and I'm hoping this summer will be a reprieve. I'd like to travel to some arts centers to learn some new techniques to bring back to my artistic practice. I've also been exploring new ways to work with clay, and I have been making ceramic jewelry. That's been a huge source of my creative energy, since it uses some of the techniques I'm familiar with, but in a new way. FAVORITE thing ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS? The architecture and landscape. I also love that this city allows and encourages people to live in ways that are outside from the traditional norms that were shown to me while growing up in the Midwest. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? Working on the pottery wheel. I love creating something beautiful from a small lump of mud. It also appeals to the competitive side of my personality. I'm always challenging myself to make things taller, thinner, more efficiently with as little bit of clay as possible. FAVORITE QUOTE? I love all of the Al-Anon slogans, but my favorite is "Progress, not perfection."

Tulane. Influenced by the aesthetic associated with New Orleans' Newcomb Pottery tradition, her dinnerware, jewelry, and decorative ceramics feature bold relief patterns and design motifs that reference Louisiana's unique landscapes and indigenous flora. Her tableware has been featured in Garden & Gun, and she was recently awarded a 2021 grant from The Studio Potter. You can find her gorgeous works at The Historic New Orleans Collection and Judy at the Rink as well as at regional art festivals and her eponymous studio.

I nspired by life's mundanities, Mary's acrylic and ink imagined scenes are full of color and pattern. Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Mary received her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Georgia and her MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art. Before returning to the creative process, she managed a private art collection, negotiating sales and acquisitions and working with some of today's leading contemporary artists. Like many before her, she felt New Orleans calling and made the move just as the pandemic began to unfold. Mary Ball UPTOWN Artist maryballart.com

Why New Orleans? There is something about the culture and energy here that started speaking to me later in life. After being in the hustle of New York, I was ready to move back down south and into a slower paced environment. I've never looked back. What do you do to nurture creativity? I go on walks and photograph things along the way. I look for beauty in the mundane things — the mold on a wooden fence, a beautiful shadow, the color of a pink flower against a purple house. It's the things that are almost always there, but that you don't notice unless you're really paying attention. FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS? I love that the humid, warm weather allows for a wide variety of lush and tropical plants. I especially love that there are snoballs. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? When I create, I become an archeologist digging to reveal new things about myself and the world. It makes me feel connected to something bigger.

FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A SUNDAY AFTERNOON? Long walk along the levee with my dog.

FAVORITE QUOTE? "And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

why NEW ORLEANS? I want to make an impact in my hometown showing young creative Black women growing up here that, like me, they can have a seat at the table. WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? I go within, pray, take walks, meditate, read self-help books, and practice positive daily affirmations. How did the pandemic influence your creativity? The pandemic has taught me to stay focused and to be patient with myself. It has allowed me to get quiet and go deeper within. It also gave me free time to study what is needed jewelry wise in the city of New Orleans. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? I am inspired by nature, especially water. I am currently designing a new collection, and I'm noticing most of the pieces are reminiscent of water or waves. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? I love having the freedom to create. It's a beautiful blessing which brings me much joy and peace. FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A SATURDAY AFTERNOON? Bike ride in City Park ending with crawfish. FAVORITE QUOTE? "Only from the heart can you touch the sky." Rumi

Before turning her passion into a business, the Crescent City native worked in real estate and as a financial advisor for credit unions and local banks in New Orleans. After receiving praise for her handmade rings, she attended the New Orleans School of Metalsmithing to perfect her craft and launched her company in 2017. Her modern-day heirlooms feature ethically sourced gemstones and metals, and each piece is designed to tell a story about the wearer.

Allison Tiller, Melissa Montgomery, Penn Iarocci UPTOWN Co-founders of Epiphany Throws epiphanythrows.com F rustrated with the lack of eco-friendly alternatives to traditional Mardi Gras plastic throws (which generate tons of waste and clog our sewers why NEW ORLEANS? Penn: I grew up in Nola and have a passion for the rich culture and history — there's a soul all its own that could never be duplicated. Allison: Family!

and streets before ending up in waterways and oceans), Allison, Melissa, and Penn embarked on a quest to design and source items they would be proud to throw. With "love the party, love the planet" as a mantra, they launched Epiphany Throws — a company passionate about fair trade, waste reduction, sustainability, and giving back. Their retail products are 100% handmade in New Orleans, which also creates jobs in the community.

Melissa: I matched in a residency program here in New Orleans. I ended up meeting my husband on the 12th floor of Charity Hospital and the rest is history. HOW DID THE PANDEMIC INFLUENCE YOUR CREATIVITY? Penn: We would not have created the upcycled costume accessories without the pandemic. The need for masks was so ubiquitous that we couldn't help but think of selling them. Mardi Gras costumes are so frequently thrown away after one use, so we just connected the dots and got to work. Allison: It forced us to be creative with our business model. We rely on riders purchasing bulk throws, and obviously that didn't happen this year. We came up with some cool alternatives, such as the upcycled accessories, Personal Parade Packs, and the Epiphany Bracelet, which supported Feed the Second Line. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? Melissa: Science. A vaccine that was developed for a novel virus this quickly is inspirational. I'm inspired by my kids. They wear those masks better than most adults. They are our future and we owe it to them to make this world a better place. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? Melissa: I had a friend who told me that she understood she needed to be more sustainable, but for her it needed to be easy. I have thought about this comment a lot. I love that Epiphany is making a tangible effort to make Mardi Gras more sustainable and get the krewes, riders, and suppliers talking about their environmental impact on the city of New Orleans. FAVORITE QUOTE? Penn: "Wherever you go, there you are." Allison: I love the Beatitudes. Melissa: "The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it." Robert Swan

Lenora Chong MARIGNY L enora is the Executive Chef and a co-owner of Morrow's, one of New Orleans' most exciting and innovative places to dine. The cosmopolitan menu reflects her Korean heritage and love of traditional Creole cuisine, but it's her years of entrepreneurial experience and passion for cooking that raises the bar of excellence. Believing that she can touch the heart and soul of her customers through the gift of food and hospitality, Lenora has cultivated an impressive following of locals and celebrities alike, making Morrow's the place to be in a city known for its warm welcome and unrivaled restaurants.

Executive Chef, Restaurateur morrowsnola.com

Why New Orleans? The essence of New Orleans is in its diversity. This is truly where all shades of colors and cultures are embraced, adopted, and evolved. Biggest inspiration in your work? My Father, who was a chef, taught me to express myself through food. Though he's not here today, I still think of his instruction and apply it when I need a little inspiration. Favorite part about what you do? It's extremely gratifying to see others find comfort in the experience and feel the love I am interpreting through my food. What is inspiring you right now? That fact that more of us are developing food preparation techniques to come up with wonderful new creations. It pushes me to step outside of traditional cooking and to continue to evolve. Favorite thing about living in New Orleans? The love for its culture and the warmth of the people but most of all I admire resilience that we as a community possess, it's truly something of a phenomenon. FAVORITE QUOTE? why NEW ORLEANS? Simply put, there's no other place like it.

WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? Finding a balance between old and new, chaos and order. I am particularly drawn to older crafts like hand embroidery and quilting. Finding ways to incorporate these techniques into my work really excites me right now. FAVORITE thing ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS? Making my costume for Mardi Gras Day. There's nothing better than having your best pals over, opening a few bottles of wine, and letting the creative juices flow. I actually missed the hot glue gun burns and glitter covering the floor this year. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? I love that my art becomes a part of someone's life, and that's something I can say about my edible art as well as my fine art. Ann Marie Auricchio MIDCITY Artist

annmarieauricchio.com

O riginally from New York, Ann Marie landed in New Orleans six years ago after living in cities around the country. She is currently represented by Octavia Art Gallery and is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Center 2021 Artist-in-Residence program. For nearly 28 years, Ann Marie has worked nationally as a scenic artist from major film and television sets to theater and opera stages. Since moving here, she has carved a niche as a muralist and decorative finish artisan for both residential and commercial spaces, including a large custom mural for the new Hotel St. Vincent located in the Lower Garden District.

why NEW ORLEANS? New Orleans enables me to live a life I love. I can create my own story, my own way of being here. New Orleans embraces, celebrates, and exudes creativity. She is a most magical muse. What is inspiring you right now? Spring has always been my favorite time of year — the light is brighter, the days longer, and everything is regenerating and growing. There has been a lot of change in the past year (both universally and personally) that has been a driving force of inspiration as well. What do you do to nurture creativity? I love looking at other artworks, watching films, and having conversations with other artists. I also need to get my hands dirty in the garden. It's a grounding that always opens channels to creativity for me. Most of all allowing myself the time and space I need for my creativity to manifest. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? Bringing beauty into people's lives. Art brings people to another place, another realm, a special place of joy. FAVORITE QUOTE? "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." Artist and Songwriter imyourboyfriend.com

Why New Orleans? To be invited, to sing along, to be different, even as you belong.

That's New Orleans to me…a city with a very healthy relationship with creativity, a flexible concept of community, enfoldment without diluting individuality. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? I've been designing clothes! I've always styled my shoots and stage costumes, but it only just occurred to me that no one said I'm not allowed to try this too. And my mom sews, so it's such a fun project for us. You'd think my sketches are from a 2nd grader, but lately my design ideas have literally kept me up at night, in the good way only an idea can. HOW DID THE PANDEMIC INFLUENCE YOUR CREATIVITY? While I stand by the sentiment that a pandemic is not a residency, I actually had a very creative 2020. I spent the whole year in studios, writing and producing songs, mostly for other artists. Performing has been so central to my identity as an artist, so time off the stage has been strange and disorienting. But, it's also nice leaving those rollers on the shelf for a while, to trust that they'll still be there when the time comes. Favorite part about living in New Orleans? I could say the culture of costuming, food, or music…but wouldn't it be funnier if I said it's co-existing with so many lizards. I mean really…the sidewalks of elsewhere feel empty without hundreds of scampering little invaders.

Favorite part about what you do? Playing dress up!

FAVORITE QUOTE? "Comedy is tragedy plus time." Carol Burnett

Trishala Bhansali UPTOWN

Fashion Designer shoplekha.com

E ach summer while growing up, Trishala traded New Orleans for India, roaming the stalls with her brother for fabrics. After a decade-long career in luxury retail buying in New York, she felt the pull to return home and marry her two identities. On a trip to Delhi to visit family, Trishala was introduced to a foundation that sponsored female embroiderers in rural Punjab. There she got the idea for shoe designs, which were first stocked at Sunday Shop on Magazine Street and Esby Apparel in Austin. Lekha was born and the first womenswear collection launched shortly after. Last year, she collaborated with The Chloe on the new boutique hotel's robes and uniforms.

WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW? Florals — color, shape, movement. We spent the bulk of 2020 at a flower farm in Connecticut and have started doing more floral-based block prints as of late. I've tried to stay away from traditional Indian floral block prints, but find myself getting inspired by the azaleas blooming here in all shades of pink and looking at archival chintz blockprints. WHAT DO YOU DO TO NURTURE CREATIVITY? Typically travel! Over the past year, it has been difficult to stay creative, but I've found that conversations have kept me going. Communicating with friends about process, about design, and about fabrics and communicating with our Lekha community about how and what they've been wearing. The pandemic has been especially difficult for the creative process, given that we design in-season with 100% of the process happening while I am in India. Each of our garments is a collaboration between the artisans, a close friend of mine in India, and myself — testing block prints, dying swatches on new fabrications, creating embroideries. Needless to say it has been a struggle to design and develop. FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A SUNDAY AFTERNOON? A walk in Audubon Park with my dog and a Pimm's Cup on the porch of the Columns. FAVORITE thing ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS? The people, the spring weather, and the music — when you put all three together, you get Jazz Fest which is also one of my favorite things about living in New Orleans. FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? Working alongside and learning from incredible women, both here and in India. Also, I love wearing muslin day in and day out. FAVORITE QUOTE? "If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform one million realities." Maya Angelou
