FROM THE EDITOR

T he holidays inspire me to think about what matters most — family and friends — and this year my focus is intense. Yes, it will look very different to many of us — grandparents may be on Zoom calls, we may be entertaining outdoors using small heaters, and out of town relatives may opt to sit tight. But nonetheless, the true spirit of the season is something to celebrate and we will. This has been such a long year and I'm not the only one leaping at the chance to get the festivities going in both traditional and innovative ways. As I make my gift giving list and start to think about smaller parties and gatherings, I'm going 100% local. I'm ordering holiday foods from my favorite restaurants and bakeries (and gift cards too), shopping locally with special attention to museums and arts-based organizations, and donating money to The Second Harvest Food Bank and Son of a Saint. More importantly, I'm planning to spend lots of time with the children in my family, whether by FaceTime or in person. Creating magical moments and memories are all the more important as we struggle through challenging times, and role modeling kindness and optimism is the greatest gift of all.

Jennifer and John Rareshide SETTING THE STAGE

W hen Jennifer Mattingly Rareshide was growing up in Texas, she performed in the Nutcracker with the Beaumont Civic Ballet for many Christmas seasons. "Beginning in the fourth grade and until my senior year in high school, my entire month of December was swept up in the magic of this classic ballet," she explains. "With elaborate scenic design, splendid costumes, and Tchaikovsky's mesmerizing music, it was an extraordinary childhood experience." Dancing the roles of Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy at home and later performing in the Waltz of the Flowers in New York City with the Joffrey Ballet meant that Jennifer was on stage on many a Christmas day. Now, in the Garden District home she shares with her husband John, teenage daughters Caroline and Christina, and Luna, their King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, she brings that same beloved traditional joy to her own family holiday.

A s a young adult, I traveled during the holidays with the Joffrey Ballet. I performed on Christmas day in Washington at the Kennedy Center and in Los Angeles at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The last Nutcracker I would ever perform was in New York City. My memories are beyond magical.

theatrical Santa Claus merriment," she says. In addition to the ballet's influence on her creativity, Jennifer notes that her mom is a huge inspiration. "My mother was born on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and was named Carole, thus Christmas is her favorite time of the year. She is extremely creative and would stay up all night transforming our home with imaginative decorations. Even now at age 80, 'Christmas Carole' still gathers our entire immediate family from near and far to photograph an annual themed Christmas card," Jennifer smiles. "She is amazing." Every year, the Rareshides choose a beautiful freshly cut Frasier Fir tree from Holy Name of Jesus School and it lasts perfectly until Twelfth Night when the tree comes down. "The lights are very important to me," she explains. "It takes as long as three Lifetime Christmas shows for me to weave the white lights into and around the entire tree," she laughs. Her large collection of hand blown ornaments include nods to The Nutcracker including a glass Clara

or two, handsome nutcracker princes, and less common characters from the ballet such as candy cane dancers and Polichinelles. She has lots of different garlands and several tree toppers, so each year she changes the look up by mixing the elements together in different ways. As far as gift wrapping goes, she loves it and has her process down pat. She sets up a utility table with rolls of wrapping paper and boxes of unique gift tags, decorative baubles, and pretty ribbon purchased from favorite local shops all year long. Armed with lots of tape, several pairs of scissors, and her handy glue gun, she starts her creative process. "This year, I started wrapping in October to reduce the stress of the countdown to Christmas and to be able to enjoy viewing the packages under the tree for a longer period of time," she explains. "We're at home more this year, so it makes sense to relax and start earlier. But I've also been known to throw an unwrapped Amazon Prime package behind the wrapped gifts on Christmas Eve as it arrived upon our departure for 4 p.m. mass at Holy Name."

We've all been there.

Both Jennifer and John enjoy collecting china, glassware, and silver and setting the table in many different ways. For this party, they layered the table with Lynn Chase 'Chelsea Winter Bird' chargers and salad plates and Herend 'Golden Edge' dinner plates. I love how the pale blue Varga crystal flutes, which were wedding gifts, pick up the soft accents from the china and all of the touches of red and gold — berries, candle rings, glittery tapers, and a French table runner — tie everything together. Sterling silver pieces — a caviar server and large tray from Jennifer's mom, wine bottle coasters John purchased at Neal Auction Company, and Sheffield candlesticks were a wedding gift — are all about elegance and tradition. "Due to the pandemic, we won't be attending the ballet this year," Jennifer explains. "But we have so much to be grateful for and we will enjoy the holidays at home all the more this season."

Instead of their yearly open-house for neighbors, family, and friends , this year the Rareshides are planning several festive and smaller soirees. "I'm trying to get creative about entertaining this year," Jennifer says. "We're thinking low-key, but still very special." They have a lovely tall table, which is actually made from a champagne riddling rack, that they'll gather around for casual wine tastings and several dinner parties are on the calendar. Their enclosed porch makes for the most intimate and charming dining room that overlooks the front courtyard. "I decorate the windows differently each year. This year, I found these simple white paper lighted stars at World Market and we love the glow especially at night."

A s we bring out the fine china, polish the silver, and decorate with symbolic colors and holiday décor, we are all the more focused this year on creating memories and joy for those we hold most dear. Here, we present two beautiful bedecked and bedazzled family gatherings that are sure to inspire. In an Uptown home with four energetic children under the age of 12, Kristina Fortier of Porter New Orleans created a glistening winter wonderland that the entire family enjoyed. Using a palette of Sugar Plum Fairy hues in the living room, she decorated the bookcases, coffee table, and a handsome chest of drawers with splendid nutcrackers, glittery cottages, and touches of iced greenery. "I love to tweak the homeowner's own accessories to build a holiday look. In a fantastic handcrafted bowl by LiBird Studio, I piled in simple glass balls and in an antique brass bowl, I added seasonal faux foliage," she explains. Gold-edged Annieglass trays, one holding RidgeWalker crimson goblets and another with facemasks as party favors, keep everyone happy. For the dining table, Kristina went with a kid- friendly tabletop — Relish melamine dishes from Judy at the Rink, Mario Luca Giusti acrylic red goblets from Hilltop Shoppe, and wipeable Caspari placemats from Hazelnut. A collection of LiBird Magnolia Faux Bois Candlesticks, accented with vibrant holiday sprays and berry candle rings, create a simple yet stunning centerpiece.

F or an intimate dinner party celebratingHanukkah, Tom Cianfichi of Hazelnut set a stylish table and bar for festive cocktails and holiday fare. Taking the theme "Festival of Lights" literally, he layered the tablescapes with an abundance of sparkling candlelight. Two beautiful Menorahs — one by Michael Aram from Chateau Drugs & Gifts and another, an art glass piece from Oh La La Gallerie — and scattered candle holders add up to a truly special evening. Accents in shades of blue, a traditional holiday color, include boxed favors of Louis Sherry chocolates from Hazelnut, handmade wine goblets by Estelle Colored Glass from Judy at the Rink, and a collection of hand blown cocktail glasses by RidgeWalker. I love the mix of inherited silverware, antique china, vintage barware, and glamorous new gold glass dinnerware from Vietri. A collected look is all about weaving the family treasures and sentimental pieces with inspired

new elements for a personal look that's all your own. And although the color palette is fairly tight, all of the textural touches — lizard print placemats, crocodile pattern glass plates, and antique-gold faux foliage — keep everything vibrant and lively. For cocktails, everything tastes better when served in a pretty coupe or goblet. It just does. It's fun to collect barware over time and it's perfectly okay to mix and match your favorites as you develop your own signature style. Celebrating the religious holidays, sharing meals and treats with our loved ones, and honoring family traditions passed down through the generations is what makes December so magical. Of course, presents are great fun to give and receive, but the time spent with those we love singing songs, playing games, telling stories, and laughing around the table are the lasting gifts of the season.

F or Ware Porter and Jordi Land, December is filled with lots of travel, both for work and fun, and trips back to their hometowns at Christmas. So they keep their at-home holiday entertaining low-key and relaxed. "We love dinner parties, casual get-togethers where everyone hangs out in the kitchen, and our living room has seen its share of cocktails," says Ware. With rooms this pretty and inviting, I can easily see how friends and family feel right at home. As an interior decorator, Ware knows exactly how to design living spaces that are timeless, luxurious, and comfortable. In their house, a Colonial Georgian in a leafy Uptown neighborhood, Ware uses bold color, custom upholstery, and period antiques for a distinctive look that's loaded with personality and whimsical charm. The entrance foyer is a bright and happy hello that introduces the first of many strong colors we'll see throughout the house. Twelve inch stripes painted in alternating custom Farrow and Ball colors and photography by David Hillegas and Aline Smithson let us know from the get-go that vibrant
