Interestingly, when Elisha entered Jericho, the people there said to him, “Look, our Lord, this town is well situated, as you can see” (Kings 2:19). On paper, Jericho, mentioned 56 times in the Old Testament, should have been a great place to live– wonderful climate, great location, and potentially rich soil.Why then was the situation so bleak? To find that answer, travel back several centuries to the era when Joshua led the Israelites to victory over Jericho and its walls came tumbling down.The city fell under condemnation at that time. As the Bible says, “Cursed before the Lord is the man who rises up and builds this city Jericho; with the loss of his firstborn he shall lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son he shall set up its gates” (Joshua 6:26).When effort was later made to rebuild, things turned out just as prophesied (1 Kings 16:34). So, when Elisha (whose name means “God is my salvation”), came through, he was faced with the following: Tainted water- Unquestionably, water is a key ingredient in life. Generally speaking, a person can go about three days without water, so you can imagine the panic the people must have felt when none was suitable for them and their animals. Recall the predicament the Israelites found themselves in shortly after crossing the Red Sea.Three days into the wilderness, they came to a place called Marah, where the water was too bitter to drink. Moses experienced one of his many leadership challenges at that point as he faced a grumbling people. Due to excessive rain and subsequent flooding, Jackson, Mississippi faced a similar but less extensive crisis of its own in Sep tember 2022. As a result, approximately 150,000 residents were left without safe drinking water. Chances are, the water supply is more than adequate where you are.
