W hat I love about December is that I know if I get organized and intentional, my actions will impact the community long past the holidays. We have power in numbers. Now, more than ever, it’s imperative that we shop locally, support the arts, and visit our museums. Few cities have the kind of distinctive shopping opportunities that we do. Unique boutiques and locally owned businesses, with vibrant personalities all their own, make the holiday season seem so much brighter. Our world-class restaurants are ready to help us create memories and traditions that will last a lifetime. Sara Barnard, Adore’ s publisher, and I recently enjoyed dinner at the Windsor Court to celebrate the reopening of The Grill Room. The evening was spectacular. From amuse-bouches to the tastiest lobster bisque to stunning desserts (the fig financier was my favorite), it was sheer perfection. My family looks forward to yearly gatherings at Commander’s Palace and I will definitely be popping into Le Petit Bleu, their food-to-go shop next door. Turtle soup, gumbo, and pralines are my kind of takeout, especially after a day of shopping. You can even order online. Here’s to happy and healthy holidays!

ALL THINGS SHINY AND BRIGHT Sam Burkhardt

E mpty nesters, Sam and Jeff Burkhardt, have lived in their Colonial house in Lakeview for 26 years. The 100-year-old house, completely renovated after Katrina, is filled with beautiful collections of antiques, accessories, and sentimental treasures that tell this family's personal story. There's the garden furniture from Sam's childhood home repainted hot pink, the "crown" silver bowl that her son, Johnston, gave her for her birthday the year it fell on Mardi Gras day, and the many handcrafted elements and artworks they've created over the years.

I love a very full look for my tree. I start at the trunk and work my way out to create lots of layers and depth. And by sticking to the overall color palette of my home, the holiday décor is cohesive and elegant.

design, this charming home exudes happiness and joy, especially at Christmas when Sam's many talents truly shine. Sam decorates the day after Thanksgiving in order to enjoy the holiday décor the entire season. "All of my gifts will be under the tree on that Friday and festive embellishments that complement each room in the house will be in place." Her stunning tree holds over 800 ornaments (they had to switch to an artificial tree the year the fresh one toppled over under the weight) and many of them commemorate favorite family vacations and milestone events. The true showstoppers are Sam's expansive collection of iconic Shiny Brites. Shiny Brite ornaments, introduced by Corning Glass in 1937, were the most popular ornaments across the nation throughout the 1940s and 1950s. This vintage look — classic and all American — suits Sam's sunny personality and vibrant home perfectly.

I love how she uses shimmery balls and tinsel trees to accent her collection of silver Revere bowls, compotes, and vessels. There's something about the chic simplicity of soft metallic glass and sparkling antique silver that is magical to me. Using tinsel wire and favorite ornaments, Sammade jolly collars for cherished Staffordshire porcelain dogs and a garland for a gilt mirror. She even hot glued one little red ball for a Rudolph nose on antique antlers. It pops right off as soon as the yearly sleigh ride is over. Another mirror is draped with a garland of silver picture frames. "My yearly tradition is to give my son, nieces, nephews, and godchildren an ornament holding a special snapshot of them. This garland is made up of some of my son's collection." Sam's gift wrapping is spectacular, revealing the great artistry and care she puts into each exuberantly festooned presentation. She's collected vintage baubles, exquisite brooches, antique velvet ribbon, and silk satin trim for 30 years. Her favorite hunting grounds include Parisian flea markets, M&J Trimming in New York, estate sales, and antique shops around the world. "My office, where I spend hours painting, making jewelry, and working on interior design projects, is filled with boxes and

drawers of every type of art and crafting material. Long before Pinterest made it easy, I stored ideas in scrapbooks that I've covered in bright pink paper. I love the entire creative process; it's so relaxing and therapeutic." For the beautifully adorned gifts, she carefully wraps the lid and the bottom of the package separately, so that the recipient can keep the box long after opening, rather than just tossing it away. "And as with all of my decorating, I go the extra step to get the last detail done. For wrap, I shred my own paper to get the color of fill I want and make my own gift tags from my watercolors or drawings. Details are what complete the look and bring the wow factor." I couldn't agree more. The Burkhardts' home is so aligned with what American-made Shiny Brite ornaments symbolized in their heyday — optimism, family, and tradition. It's going to be a really great season.

M artha Claire and Quin Breland's Mid-City Victorian home is all about history and tradition. It was built in 1891 by an owner of a company that supplied much of the lumber used to build houses all across the city during the early 1900s. "We have a box of his sales ledgers that we hope to frame one day," explains Martha Claire, the owner of Judy at The Rink. With a vibrant young family at the helm, this old house is all about creating new memories. "We bought the house in 2015. My husband, the Managing Director of Vortex Europe, travels regularly to Germany, so he needed to be near the airport for 6 a.m. flights. Since then we've seen so much positive growth in the neighborhood. We can walk to Theo's Pizza and Brocato's every Friday with the girls and we frequently dine at the bar at Ralph's On The Park." The house is also perfect for entertaining. "We've hosted big birthday parties, celebrated friends' engagements, and happy life events at our house, and we usually host Friendsgiving. We will be living in Germany for one year and won't be home this Thanksgiving, but our families have promised to save the date for 2022." Martha Claire especially enjoys dinner parties — candlelit outdoors during Covid and family-only ones such as this one last Christmas. "We don't have many adult-only dinners during the holidays and we don't do a kid's table. in." Last year, we photographed Martha Claire at home with her daughters when the season was in full swing and she shared her thoughts on decorating, collecting, and passing down family heirlooms. Traditions are big in this home and Martha Claire honors them in super stylish and festive ways. The Christmas tree is fresh. "We pick needles out of the sisal rug for what feels like months after, but the fun our kids have choosing the tree is worth it." Her mother owned The Christmas Shoppe in Baton Rouge when she was growing up, so her collection of Christmas ornaments is fabulous. Of course, Martha Claire collects ornaments when she travels and is super excited to go to all of the Christmas markets in Germany to find unique things to bring back to Judy. "My mom gives my girls a Christopher Radko or Patricia Breen ornament each year. I honestly don't have to do much since our family is so big on gifting ornaments, holiday china, and goblets." Her crisp white mantel is styled to perfection. "The blue and white Santas are my mom's and the Cookies for Santa plate and mug were

mine as a child." She carries a splendid array of decorative ceramics at her shop, so you can build or add to your own collection. I love how she sets her dining table, mixing formal elements like Francis I sterling and Waterford crystal goblets with lighthearted costume accessories — glitter headbands, sparkly sunglasses, and blinky beads. "Quin and I both love a costume and more is more for holiday flair." Gold Annieglass ruffled chargers shimmer under Original Christmas Tree plates, a vintage pattern both she and her mom collect. Introduced in 1922, this is the oldest American Christmas tree china pattern. Her chandelier and table are adorned with Reed and Barton bells (beloved yearly gifts from her uncle) and the girls are now collecting them too. There's just so much to treasure in her home such as Quin's great-grandmother's piano and Fontanini Nativity pieces both she and Quin have received as gifts for years. With her love for entertaining and relaxed elegance, I can't think of a better person to carry on the traditions at Judy at The Rink, a beloved mainstay in the Garden District for fine gifts and décor.
