J ust as this issue was due to go to press, we started to hear the word Ida. Ida, Ida, Ida. And then she made her presence known. Within hours of her arrival, the entire city was without power and the surrounding bayou communities and river parishes, so much a part of our way of life, were devastated in her wake. It will be a long and arduous recovery; the needs are great, but our resiliency is even greater. A quick touch base with some of the people on our A-List reveals how quickly they've sprung into action. Ali McNally, who graces our cover, led a grassroots effort to personally deliver water and ice to some of our hardest hit neighborhoods. Beatriz Ball committed a portion of her company's online sales to Second Harvest Food Bank. Others quietly gave speedy financial support to organizations serving the most vulnerable. And Deanna Rodriguez, CEO and President of Entergy New Orleans, has been working around the clock as we navigate the power of Ida's wrath. I hope that you enjoy getting to know our A-List as much as I have. Inspiration, optimism, hope, and kindness go a very long way.

W e've been working on our annual A-List issue for several months now. Getting to know such a diverse and inspirational roster of entrepreneurs, creatives, and influencers is always exciting. In reading this year's interviews, an overwhelmingly common thread appeared immediately in each and every set of responses. It's impossible to miss. Though phrased in many different ways from a multitude of perspectives, vantage points, and life experiences, it all comes down to an unrivaled love for the people of New

Orleans. One after another, I read about our "DNA," our "greatest asset," and "our soul." It makes sense. We've had quite a year of introspection and simplification brought on by the pandemic; we've spent more time with family and neighbors in our parks, on our bikes, and in our streets. I know that if we had posed similar questions post-Ida to this group of leaders and innovators, their voices would be even louder. Indeed, we are resilient, we are tenacious, we are kind, and we are compassionate. We are New Orleans and we will build back brighter and better!

Why in New Orleans? New Orleans feels like a loophole in the natural order of the universe. It feels like a place that is a portal to another place. And to make art you need to be in a place with that kind of possibility. What about New Orleans inspires you? I love how Nola has this sort of refusal to be tamed. She's a wild beast. Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. A snowball, a swimming pool in summer, a good thunderstorm when I have nowhere to be, marching bands practicing for parades.

It would be so inspiring to see New Orleans flip the script and become a leader at the forefront of environmentally friendly events and spend its money on the artists, the musicians, and on defending the preservation of the beautiful natural landscape of our rare and fragile city. Another ancestor, Jacques Philippe Villeré, was the first native born governor of the state. I love my heritage here and I'm proud of it. What about New Orleans inspires you? Its soul. What would you tell your twenty-year-old self? I love you. Describe your charitable work or favorite causes. Bridge House/Grace House because addiction and behavioral health differences need to be de-stigmatized. Planned Parenthood because women should have full discretion over their bodies. And Son of a Saint – providing financial support to this organization directly impacts our community. Describe the greatest influence on your life. God.

I often say that if you are an artist living in New Orleans and aren't inspired then you are half dead. There is so much culture and so many people expressing it that it's contagious. Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. In most other places, people keep to themselves. In New Orleans we talk to strangers like we know them. We hug them. We invite them to our "crawfish berl." It always puts me in a good mood when I see locals being friendly. What about New Orleans inspires you? I'm inspired by how colorful our culture is. Our food is flavorful and spicy. We paint our houses exotic colors and our fashion matches it. The way we curve, throw, and drag our words is captivating. The people inspire me.

I've lived in big cities all over the world — London, LA, NY, Bangkok — and there is nowhere else where people are such lovers of pleasure. What would people be surprised to know about you? I jumped out of a plane at heights of 10,000 feet on Long Island, and I've also gone 60 feet below on the island of Roatán, Honduras. What amazing feelings both were. All fears broken from that point on. Spending time with Fr. Matthew J. O'Rourke S.S.J. during the last five years of his life with us on Earth. He was St. Augustine's first principal in 1951 and its first president in 1987. The "Chief" is what we called him. When I first moved here from London, I was fully prepared to pivot professions, but I've chipped away at making it work for me. I've found New Orleans to be a very welcoming, accommodating place. This is a city with many opportunities, but what really inspires me is the set of challenges that come with the city. The city is known for its culture, however those same people, particularly from the Black community, barely see the financial benefits of that. I am inspired by those folks because no matter how resilient they are, they deserve to be healthy and wealthy. I am inspired to shed light on them and the Black underserved community in this city through my work and advocacy efforts. There is a pool of Black genius here that is a force to be reckoned with. What advice would you give your twenty-year-old self? It is not denial, it is delay. It is not a loss, it is a catalyst for something greater. It is not a weakness, it is an opportunity for growth. You deserve wealth, prosperity, and happiness. Take up all the space! Describe your charitable work or favorite causes. I am the president and founder of The Orchid Society, a nonprofit that mentors young African American girls from underserved communities. My "why" is when one of our "orchid bud" mentees gets scholarships to four HBCUs. My "why" is when a mentee says, "I had no one else to call, so I called you." My "why" is when a mentee shares they had never traveled outside of the country until she joined. It is critical that Black girls see powerhouse female leaders in professional industries that look like them and be encouraged to take on the world in their beautiful, unapologetically Black skin! To see them shy when they enter the program and fearless when they get to college is everything for me!
