FROM THE EDITOR

A s Mardi Gras returned with great fanfare and sparkling weather, New Orleans enjoyed a much needed collective mood-lift. Yes, there are challenges ahead both at home and worldwide, but I am certainly better equipped to face them after taking time to celebrate joy whenever and wherever I find it. Dazzling floats with marching bands parading through the streets —morning, noon, and night —along with camaraderie found on every corner is an homage to our uniquely creative and resilient spirit. It did my heart good. So in this issue, we are continuing to deliver the sunshine, both literally and figuratively. We're bringing you a heavy dose of optimism in our fashion and home décor pages as well as featuring a wedding you're sure to adore with all of its stylish and happy details. Most of all, we are excited to shine the light on a dynamic and diverse group of individuals that fuel our city with their talent, personalities, and love for community. I think you will enjoy getting to know them as much as we did. It's onward and upward from here —Jazz Fest, crawfish boils, graduations….you name it, we're here for it. Cheers to New Orleans.

A s a member of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, a global organization that strives to advance equity and inclusion in the field of design, New Orleans interior designer Penny Francis received word that Pottery Barn was accepting proposals for a new tabletop and home furnishings collaboration based on the concept of Black Joy. "I could not get the opportunity out of my head," Penny explains. "It was the height of the pandemic and my shop, Eclectic Home, was closed. I spent many hours walking in Audubon Park thinking about the possibilities. I called my daughter and fellow designer, Casi St. Julian, and said we just have to do this." And so they did. For inspiration, they reflected on their ancestral history (Penny's mother is Lydia Haydel, the great-granddaughter of Victor Haydel who was born on Whitney Plantation) and their own celebrations as part of a large Southern family with deep local roots. "We wanted the end consumer to have a seat at 'our' table," Casi points out. "When we get together it is always a good time —picture 30 exuberant family members singing happy birthday while aunts and uncles play Uno around the dining table or sing karaoke in the living room. Our joy is as beautiful as anyone else's, but it hasn't been represented enough." Their initial proposal included motifs derived from textiles and arts found in the region of Western Africa where their ancestors originate and a color palette

inspired by New Orleans, a melting pot of diversity and culture. "I will never forget our first meeting," says Casi. "The entire PB team was practically moved to tears when we presented our first imagery evoking Black Joy. It gives me chills to think about it." From there, the mother- daughter duo was selected, along with BADG founder Malene Barnett and Los Angeles designer Lisa Turner, to create the line of lifestyle accessories that launched this Spring nationwide. I love everything about this campaign. The products, developed around themes such as "Harmony as a connected community," "Triumph over tribulations," and "Celebration of love and family," highlight the rich and vibrant beauty of Black culture. Table linens made by artisans in Eswatini, South Africa, colorful bedding emblazoned with empowering words, and handblown hurricanes and vases deliver a sophisticated and joyful refresh that's perfect in any interior setting. My favorite piece, soon to be sitting on my glass coffee table, is the Family Bond Links. Crafted from black and bleached wood, this symbol of unity and strength sends a universal visual message that we can all embrace.

T he handpainted pattern on the dinnerware is influenced by a shield motif seen in Cameroon and Nigeria and the color palette is inspired by New Orleans. With our music, architecture, food, and traditions, we are naturally instilled with such joy. Sharing that message with a national audience is a dream achievement.

Matt Armato & Beau Ciolino PROBABLY THIS probablythis.com M att Armato and Beau Ciolino have been together since college, but their professional partnership took a few more years to develop. Their popular blog, Probably This, started as a fun place to organize recipes, stories, and design tips which then took off and turned into two full time jobs with a book deal. The New Orleans natives are engaged and currently documenting the renovation of their Algiers Point 1880s double shotgun home. Their debut book, Probably This Housewarming , will be available April 19 as well as a relaunch of their online shop, Probably This Collection.

How did you meet? Matt: We met while we were students at Loyola. Beau was involved with an organization that matched students to internships abroad and was manning an info table. I stopped by to learn more —maybe more so about him than about the program —and we ended up going abroad a few months later to teach English in Vietnam for the summer! Beau: I highly recommend really putting your relationship to the test just a couple months in with a 90-day trip to Southeast Asia. You'll learn a lot about each other, and years later you'll ask your mom, "I'm glad it worked out how it did, but why on earth did you let me do that?" Why New Orleans? Beau: I like that it gives us a unique perspective in our field of work. New Orleans is a weird, inspiring place, and most of the folks in our industry live in New York and Los Angeles, so being down here in our little swamp makes us special. And I love being special. What is the greatest upside to working with your partner? Matt: Beau and I have vastly different working styles and thinking styles, and our different approaches are usually what help us catch issues the other might miss or add a different perspective the other might not have thought of.

What do you love about what you do? Matt: I have always been drawn to hosting, DIY projects, kitchen stuff, and home design, and I love that I get to spend time experimenting with everything in the home realm and can call it work. It's like the dream job I never knew existed. Beau: We're always trying to inspire our audience to improve their home life in some way, which often means learning and exploring new projects, recipes, and approaches to design. I love that our work will always encourage us to keep being creative and expanding our taste and abilities. What is your favorite thing about each other? Matt: I love Beau's drive and vision. He's the one who looks at the future and thinks the sky's the limit. Beau: I find Matt's relentless effort to solve any problem inspiring. I'm usually pretty quick to throw in the towel when I don't see a way around a problem or issue, but he just keeps on trucking and tries to find creative solutions. What is your favorite way to spend your free time? Beau: Having friends and family over. We're both homebodies but also love being social so we really enjoy entertaining both casual and for holidays.

Ian & Terri Dreyer NANO ARCHITECTURE | INTERIORS nanollc.net

I an and Terri Dreyer have the Tulane School of Architecture to thank for their marriage and business. They formulated the seeds of NANO in their last year of graduate school and have been transforming the city ever since with major projects and recognition, while also bringing attention to climate change in New Orleans. Last year, the pair was invited to exhibit and won the ECC Time Space Existence Venice Biennale Architecture award in Venice, Italy. They look forward to expanding their company on a national and international level and are committed to making New Orleans the change agent and growth city for the world to model in the 21st century.

How did you meet? Ian: We were seated in orientation and Terri was, as usual, a few minutes late. I noticed her immediately, and apparently during our introductions, I made an impression as well. Terri: I told my two best friends the day I met Ian, "I met the man I am going to marry, mark my words." I cut a deal with him in the bookstore —I would get the plaster for our models, and he had to carry my stuff back to the studio and set it up. Ian: I set her things at the table immediately behind mine so that we were close. We spent 18 hours a day, sometimes more, every day, seated right next to each other, or at least back-to- back. We've had each other's back ever since. What are the keys to a successful business partnership? Terri: Respect for each other, understanding of weakness and strengths, and core common ethics whether work or personal. What have you learned working with your spouse? Ian: We like to say that our strongest attribute to any client is we argue for your best project. We approach and end every project from different places and solutions. Regardless of the final results, it is a merging of the best ideas to the betterment of the project and to the benefit of the client.

Why New Orleans? Ian: I'm a transplant (originally from New Hampshire) and Terri was born here. When I got here, it was a city with a small town feel and charm and culture. Terri: New Orleans breathes differently. It tells its own stories, and it is the background, the middle ground, and the foreground of life here. The sense of place is nothing like anywhere else and I have lived in many places all over the world. New Orleans is the accidental city where our livelihood and day-to-day living is a constant happenstance. What is your favorite thing about each other? Ian: Terri is the quintessential "mama bear." As a spouse, she's my best friend, companion, champion, and confidant. At the same time, she's the most talented professional in the field that I know. Terri: Ian is an incredible process designer/architect. He loves to solve problems, designs differently, and questions everything down to the type of concrete or the joint of millwork, which helps our design delivery. There is no one else I want in my life, on my projects, or by my side than Ian Dreyer. He is a force for all that is needed in our world right now. Favorite quote : "We have all day to piss each other off, can I just get a cup of coffee first?" -Ian Dreyer

Janice Montoya & Alex Peyroux MIEL BREWERY & TAPROOM 405 Sixth St, New Orleans, LA 70115 mielbrewery.com

I n 2013, Janice Montoya was invited by a mutual friend to visit Abita Brewery while Alex Peyroux was working. A tour and a sampling of beers led to a date —Janice says she was impressed by his knowledge of the brewing process —and the two have been together ever since. After living and working in Boston, they decided to join in on the growing brewery scene and moved back to New Orleans to open Miel Brewery & Taproom. Open daily, Miel features unique beers which pair perfectly with a rotating selection of local food trucks and pop-ups. During their down time, they enjoy heading to the park with their dogs and traveling for inspiration.

What do you love about what you do? Janice: I love communicating through our product. Each beer has a different story, feel, and vibe. I really enjoy the entire process of visually communicating our product to our guests from designing the label to putting together photoshoots of the cans. I love that each day is different as a Creative Director of Miel and that keeps me feeling inspired. Alex: I am very interested in beer history, so I love being able to brew classic styles of beer like German Hefeweizen and Vienna lagers and bring those styles to New Orleans. I also like to experiment with some wilder ingredients like pickle juice and sour candies. What have you learned while working together? Janice: Alex and I process things differently. Things that stress me out do not faze him and vice versa. We really are opposites in a good way. He is always a reassuring voice though stressors, and his optimism and positivity really kept me going through the pandemic. What makes your partnership work? Our backgrounds and skills come from two completely different fields, so we don't step on each other's toes at work. We really rely on the other's knowledge to make the best decisions. It requires having a lot of trust in the other person.

What is your favorite thing about each other? Alex: Janice has such an amazing eye for details and her vision is what really makes the brewery great. Her creativity is incredible, and we really wouldn't be where we are without her talent. Janice: He is so passionate about the brewing industry and constantly working towards making the next best beer. He sets his own bar really high and it's so inspiring. Watching him push himself makes me want to work harder. What is currently inspiring you? Janice: My degree is in Visual Arts, New Media and Animation, and I'm always thinking about the art history classes I took. I try my best to continue learning, whether it's history through a podcast or new skills in visual arts.

What is your favorite part about living and working in New Orleans?

Alex: You can't beat the food and the cocktails! Some of the most fun beers we've made were inspired by local cocktails. Janice: Being close to family. Our parents have been a huge help and we couldn't do this without them!

Toni Point & Alysia Fields THE COLLECTIVE SHOP, STATEMENT GOODS, THE MODERN BLOC & NOVEMBER FIELDS 3512 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA 70115 | statementgoods.com

B efore friends Toni Point and Alysia Fields owned a shop and several creative collections of work, they were students studying architecture and design at Mississippi State University. They officially began working together a few years later on humorous holiday cards which led to launching a full stationery collection, art prints, and products. Alysia illustrates and manages The Collective Shop on Magazine Street and Toni focuses on design and business. When they aren't challenging themselves through their work or laughing at one another, they are trying new restaurants in New Orleans, dancing, or watching reality TV.

What do you love about what you do? Toni: I love that I get to be creative almost every day, whether it is figuring out a new display at the store, working on some new stationery ideas, or even taking some time to paint. All of this brings me joy! What about New Orleans inspires you? Alysia: I love being able to walk around the city and seeing something new and interesting every time. This is such a beautiful city to live in. What is it like working with each other? Toni: Working with Alysia makes my day 10 times more fun than it would normally be. She's so funny, she's an amazing illustrator, and so easy to work with. I think that we truly complement each other because I am kind of her opposite. I'm a lot more analytical and I tend to have a more modern aesthetic. The combination of all of these things makes it a truly unique friendship/partnership. Alysia: Toni is probably the most talented artist I know. We are definitely complete opposites when it comes to how we create and design. I have always admired her ability to think and create modern design with such ease. She's the "magic" and I'm the "sauce."

What is the greatest upside to working with a partner? Toni: I was actually a freelance artist/designer for a few years before Alysia and I decided to start working together, so I know that working solo can sometimes be lonely. There are so many things that get thrown your way and things that you just don't see coming (good and bad) that it's always nice to have someone that you can bounce ideas off of or share amazing moments together. Alysia: When you have a business partner, you don't have to explain how difficult or how amazing a situation can be. That person already knows exactly how you feel. It can be really frustrating explaining your hardships about being a small business owner to others who aren't in the same boat. What makes your partnership work? Toni: I think that in our case, we knew each other for almost eight years before we ever decided to work together. We really had an understanding of who the other person is, but of course nothing is perfect. We actually disagree all of the time, but we really don't let a difference of opinion keep us from accomplishing our goals and we really try to hear what the other person is saying. Alysia: A good solid friendship has really made a difference. Not only understanding who the other person is, but also knowing who you are as well. And I actually disagree with Toni, because we only disagree with each other most of the time, not all of the time.

Julie & Isabelle Neill JULIE NEILL DESIGNS 3908 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA 70115 julieneill.com

J ulie and Isabelle Neill of Julie Neill Designs bring beauty and joy into homes across the globe with their handcrafted lighting made by their talented team of artisans. They both wear many hats —Isabelle handles more of the business side while Julie leans more creative —and find working together both fun and seamless. The mother-daughter pair loves being based in New Orleans —a "small town with international style." When they aren't in the studio, the pair can be found strolling in City Park or around the Garden District with their dog, Jack.

How did your professional partnership begin? Julie: Isabelle grew up watching me develop the company, so she saw the challenges of balancing the creative and economic sides of running a business and felt that her strengths fell more into the business arena. She decided to major in Business at Tulane which aligned perfectly for a partnership since my strengths were decidedly rooted in the artistic side of things. After graduation, we both felt that combining our abilities would make for a fabulous partnership, and it has turned out to be just that. What have you learned while working together? Isabelle: It has added another dimension to our mother/ daughter relationship to have my mother as a partner. She has taught me so much about creativity, design, and style. Working with her and knowing she trusts me with many aspects of the business make me proud of who I've grown up to be. Julie: I've learned there is another person in this world who I can trust with some very important parts of the business, so I can focus on where I shine as a designer and as it turns out, Isabelle is better at some of the other aspects than I am! What makes your partnership work? First and foremost, we love each other. We share a common outlook and passion for what we do but bring different strengths to the table. We are focused on our shared goals and appreciate each other's unique assets. We respect each other's opinions and make it a priority to work as a team.

What is the greatest upside to working with a partner? So much more can be accomplished and done well when you share both the vision and the drive to achieve your goals. We celebrate our successes and help each other with our challenges, and we are both energetic and driven to make our company be the best it can be. Having a partner to share your successes with makes them all the sweeter. What about New Orleans inspires you? New Orleans is filled with history, beautiful architecture, lush tropical foliage, and interesting creative people where each day contains the possibility of some remarkable unexpected experience. We love living here because it is never ordinary. How do you like to spend your free time? Isabelle: I love working out —you can find me at Fit Therapy training with Emile or on my Peloton. Julie: Pursuing creative things such as art, decorating my house, and entertaining. What is your favorite quote? Julie: "It's love that makes the world go round!" WS Gilbert Isabelle: "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." Norman Vincent Peale

WEDDINGS WE ADORE Adley & Chris By K at y Danos | Photogr a phe d by Cathe r i n e Gu i dry

A lthough Adley Schmid and Christian Landry are from Lafayette, New Orleans has always been Adley's second home. "My mom is from New Orleans, and I have so many cherished memories of spending time with my grandparents and many cousins. My parents' wedding reception was at the New Orleans Country Club, so it was beyond special to celebrate our marriage in the very same place." With many sentimental details woven into the weekend, their wedding experience was truly personal. "I love the 'save the date card' created by Caitlin Gossen of Hark Creative Co. The original watercolor depicts one of our favorite dates — dinner at

Galatoire's —and was a fun way to set the mood for the events to come."

What I love is Adley's stunning gown. She chose an unembellished silk sheath by Sareh Nouri from Town and Country Bridal, but knew that she wanted to personalize the look. A veil, covered in ethereal vines by the same designer, provided the inspiration needed to make the dress her own. "We ordered yards of extra veil fabric and a dressmaker at home applied the whimsical vines and leaves to the gown. I wanted it to look organic and natural —the way vines really grow. I stood for hours as we hand-placed the appliques all over the dress." A simple veil and her grandmother's sapphire jewelry completed her romantic ensemble. "I was very close to my grandmother and although she passed away in 2020, she'd placed the jewelry aside for me to wear on my wedding day. It was like she was right there beside me." At the reception, Kinfolk Brass Band introduced the new couple and The Rouge Krewe kept the dance floor packed. Guests dined on crispy fried oysters, bacon-wrapped shrimp, and a showstopping fruits de mer served on a custom ice sculpture. Chris's young nieces wore adorable dresses handmade by his mom, and Adley gave her parents unique handkerchiefs including a very special one for her dad with words from The Wizard of Oz . "We had a very long engagement because of Covid, but I wouldn't have changed a thing. There's something special about having that time as a couple to begin plans for the rest of your life together —that's definitely something worth waiting to celebrate with family and friends."
