T he run-up to the end of the year is a marathon, not a sprint. We deck the halls, exchange gifts, celebrate religious holidays, and eat, drink, and make merry. By the time I'm watching the clock strike midnight on December 31, you can be sure I've had more than enough peppermint bark, spiked eggnog, and Christmas cookies to hold me over until next year. More than enough. With the New Year comes renewed energy and focus. We've got exciting things planned for Adore and we are grateful to our readers and advertisers. This year, we launched some big firsts: the A-List, Shop Adore-to-Door, and the Adore website, where you can find all of our digital issues as well as daily profiles on stylish happenings and personalities. It's been a successful year. In 2020, we'll bring you more beautiful homes, great dining recommendations, and fun spotlights on the people who make our town unique. So stay tuned and thank you for your enthusiasm and support! Here's to 2020. The crew at Adore is ready for you! by katy danos

C ocktails for KID smART is one of my favorite fundraising events of the year. Yes, the party is always swell, but what sets it apart for me is the positive energy in the room. You can feel it. The guests are so committed to KID smART's mission of bringing art- based learning to public school classrooms that the shared enthusiasm creates such a joyful bond. KID smART is 20 years strong and only getting stronger. As I'm sipping my drink and nibbling on hors d'oeuvres, I'm thinking about the kids who benefit from their many programs. Their potential, their imaginations, and their success enriched by music, dance, and art — the very things that spark my own creativity. And I know I am not the only one at the party with this mental picture. This year's gala was presented by Regions Bank and hosted by Christa and Matt Schwartz in their beautiful Garden District home. As art collectors and parents of three young daughters, it was a perfect fit for the annual soiree. Originally from the East Coast, the couple met at Tulane's

"With work happening in both places," Christa explains, "it just made sense to raise our family here in New Orleans and to spend summers in New York. I feel so blessed to be able to raise our girls in two cities with so much history, culture, art, and music." Knowing that Christa is an interior designer, I was eager to see how she decorated her own home. True to her signature style, the spaces are fresh and bright, modern and comfortable, and filled with interesting art. In the dining room, dramatic works provide striking pops of

The artwork above the fireplace is vintage Danish and the pair of paintings near the window are by Caroline Wright from the Martine Chaisson Gallery. More great art, including a Hunt Slonem work above the mantle and a commissioned wall hanging of vintage wool and silk yarns by Panthera Textiles, hangs in the living room. And I had to know more about the vibrant blue and white paint "smear" in the family room; I loved the texture. "It was pretty easy to be intentional since each piece was purchased for this house. Our first home in New York had all glass windows!" For the gala, food and entertainment flowed throughout their spacious house and although it was an unusually warm and balmy October night, we were not deterred from enjoying the backyard covered patio and poolside entertainment. The dining room table was laden with artfully arranged charcuterie by Martin Wine Cellar. And with their catering gear tucked away in the property's carriage house, passed appetizers such as petite tomato and goat cheese tarts seemed to magically appear. I'm one of those party goers who can happily dine on fine cheeses and tasty small bites, so tuna tartare, crab ravigote melts, and camembert dripping with fresh honey made up my starter, entrée, and cheese course. Outdoors, chefs grilled Argentinian steak, Atlantic salmon, and seasonal vegetables. I had time to chat with some of the Martin catering staff and it was obvious that great care went into this delicious menu. For music, we enjoyed David

and feel excited about learning. That's huge!"
A highlight of the evening for me was speaking with visual artist Marjorie Brown Pierson and Board President Suzanne Dumez about the collage 'Channel Lace' that Marjorie generously donated for the live auction. Anticipation was definitely building! With auctioneer Ruthie Winston at the auction stand, things got lively. And when the gavel went down, longtime KID smART supporter Jim Mounger was pronounced the highest bidder. I am already looking forward to next year's fundraiser as KID smART continues to exceed their goals. Take a look at their inspiring website and I hope to see you at the 2020 gala.
I enjoyed chatting with co-chair Martine Chaisson Linares about childhood ballet lessons and our belief that ballet study builds confidence and self-esteem. Although I never progressed further than being a mouse in the Nutcracker, I learned so much about self-discipline and patience. She had me laughing when she said "for now, my toddler is more of a tapper." To be honest, I'm probably more of a tapper myself. And co-chair Erin Romney-Cazes, founder of Romney Studios, knows the power of teaching students in multi-layered ways. "The KID smART approach offers a diverse way of empowering children to express themselves

T here is no better place to enjoy the Feast of the Seven Fishes than in New Orleans. The city is surrounded by an abundance of seafood that is ingrained into most New Orleanians' diets. For the second year, Emeril's Delmonico offers their take on the Italian- American Christmas Eve tradition with a four-course menu. "This year, we're trying to push a little more balance in terms of what traditional Italian seafood preparations are and what New Orleanians want to eat," Anthony Scanio, Delmonico's Chef de Cuisine, explains. "Don't worry, last year I didn't cook any eel. I know better than that." On Tuesday, December 24, diners will enjoy seven types of seafood at the St. Charles Avenue restaurant. Some are regional, while others, like lobster, are not. According to Scanio, it is very traditional in Italian cookery to have dishes that reflect the abundance and to put multiple types of seafood in a single dish. Chef Scanio does this by

combining jumbo lump crab, gulf shrimp, and scallops in the Insalata di Mare. While the meal could be spread over seven or eight courses, he prefers a shorter, more savory experience. "I don't think our guests want seven tiny little courses. A bounty of seafood will make our guests happy and it reflects both New Orleans and Italian traditions." The feast, which includes a wine pairing, will be offered from 11:30 a.m. and the last of the guests will be seated at 6 p.m. The meal is sure to feel like a Friday in New Orleans: a little bit of work in the morning before tucking into a long, luxurious lunch. Following the tasty first course salad come three mouthwatering courses containing baked oysters on the half shell, tuna meatballs, and lobster paired with saffron risotto. Scanio's goal is to have guests discuss the courses upon departure. "I want everyone to enjoy everything but that's part of the whole experience: you look forward to what you're about to eat, you're eating it, then you discuss it. It's very much the Italian way."

Making a fish-centric menu (that successfully combines both Italian and New Orleans traditions) wasn't as stressful as one might think. Scanio, who has been with Delmonico since 2005, creates specials for the restaurant daily, as well as tasting menus for holidays like Thanksgiving and works on themed menus throughout the year. He found that having parameters allowed him to focus and to be more creative. "But, delicious [food] is always more important than creative," he says knowingly. "I'm happiest to represent this tradition and create within this tradition."
The meal comes to a finish with a classic tiramisu, featuring homemade ladyfingers, which is purposefully not too rich or heavy. "The next day is Christmas day. You're going to do the whole thing over again. You have to pace yourself!" The dessert isn't the only treat of the day: the 19th century building is thoughtfully decorated for the holidays; wreaths are placed throughout Delmonico and a fresh garland adorns the staircase. Live music near the bar contributes to the day's festivities. The restaurant, which was purchased

T his New Year's Eve not only marks the completion of another year, but the end of the decade. While we're still wondering where 2019 went, we look forward to the 20s (hopefully they're roaring!) and all that they will bring. To commemorate such an occasion, we're reaching for glitzy getups of all shapes, sizes, and shades. A New Year's Eve party at home is just about as luxurious as it gets. The evening is spent with family and close friends, and there is no traffic to fight! It's simply far more relaxed and personal. So when Sanja Alickovic and her husband Brandon Haynie decided to entertain at their home on the biggest night of the year, their friends were delighted. "Many of us have young children, so it's a challenge to go out for New Year's Eve," Sonja explains. "We wanted to have a festive gathering for our friends and their kids. I like to keep it simple and low-key with food and decor, but I love to dress up. So we made it black tie." With a young son, Alec, a desire for privacy, and a love for indoor/outdoor entertaining, the couple knew exactly what they wanted when they designed and built their dream house on a rare empty lot in an Uptown neighborhood that they both loved.

"I grew up in Europe and that shaped my aesthetic," says Sanja. "This house is our contemporary interpretation of a traditional French Quarter courtyard-style home. From the street, all you see is the entrance. It's our little oasis." Set back on the property, the house features an open floor plan, drenched in natural light. It opens seamlessly to several outdoor dining and lounging areas and a pool, green space, and an edible garden. "The design makes it so easy to entertain, whether it's a pool party or a sit-down dinner for 30 people," says Sanja. Since the weather is pretty mild in December, Sanja planned this party exactly that way.
She had Martin Wine Cellar prepare a grazing board of meats, cheeses, shrimp cocktail, nuts, and simple hot appetizers. "My philosophy is simplicity and elegance. Everyone feels relaxed that way, including me," she notes. "I ordered cupcakes and beautiful shortbread cookies from Beth Biundo. They are always a hit." Green Tea margaritas were made in small batches; afterall, it's New Orleans and it's warm outside. One of Sanja's family traditions is to share "gold coins" throughout the holiday season. "We always have lots of 'money' on hand. In parts of Europe, chocolate coins are gifted to children during the holidays as a sign of good fortune." The dining room sparkles with hand-cast Bocci lighting, a sleek Parsons table by

Restoration Hardware, and a commissioned painting by Ashley Longshore. Vera Wang flutes, Sanja's wedding crystal, and simple cuttings from the garden are chic and festive touches. For the children, Sanja set up a crafts area and pint- sized furniture from Crate and Kids, strung a streamer or two, and as twilight approached, she brought out the light-up beach balls. "I love using them in the pool for soft illumination. And the kids love it." She placed candles, votives, and lanterns under the moonlight and when it was time for the big countdown, everyone reached for the sparklers. Sanja and Brandon's family-friendly celebration, relaxed and stylish, was such a lovely evening. There's something quite memorable about enjoying the very early moments of the New Year with those you hold most dear.

Girls Night By Michaela Bechler
STAYING HOME HAS NEVER BEEN SO FUN IN
G oing out in New Orleans — especially during the holiday season — is a guaranteed good time. While there are parties to be attended and friends to be seen, sometimes taking the night off will do wonders. Whether you're staying home to relax and recharge, or simply want to drink wine sans crowd, a night in with the girls is one of our favorite pastimes. Tuck into great takeout, try a new game or face mask, and enjoy the company in the peace and quiet of your own abode.

Organize Your Life This Year GET IT TOGETHER
By Michaela Bechler
I f January had a buzzword, it would be resolution. While they tend to be broken and forgotten within weeks (you can blame Mardi Gras), one habit we're hoping to keep up with is organization. Tasks like clearing clutter at home and finally getting a handle on our schedules are at the top of the list. While we channel Marie Kondo this season, we're reaching for tools that will help us along the way. From colorful hampers to planners that hold you accountable, staying organized has never been so satisfying.
