FROM THE EDITOR

W e selected our 2020 A-List last February and began photography in early March. Little did we know that our worlds would turn upside down. We postponed the issue to focus on our families as we absorbed the shock of the growing crisis. Now here we are months later, settled into the rhythm of working from home, but it's not like we can just pick up where we left. Nothing is the same. I proceeded with caution when getting back in touch with our A-List. I knew that many of them had not yet reopened their businesses and that some were grieving lost loved ones. Like all of us, this group of influential leaders is weathering the seismic changes that come with something of such crushing magnitude. With even greater passion and determination, they've shared their vision for our next normal with hopes of a better tomorrow. The 25 New Orleanians spotlighted here are nothing short of inspiring.

T he color blue, long associated with feelings of faith and serenity, creates a sense of calm — something we could all use more of these days. Cobalt, sapphire, and indigo symbolize trust and loyalty, and the colors of the sky and ocean remind us of limitless possibilities. Blue, a confident and steadfast hue, is having its moment in everything from fashion to home décor to barware and tabletop. Elegant and royal, stable and wise, the color blue is just what we need right now. T RUE BLUE By Catherine Campbell

-LIST A THE

2020's MOST INFLUENTIAL NEW ORLEANIANS

By katy danos | photos by chris granger

F or the entrepreneurs, creatives, and influencers on this year's A-List, leadership is not a title, it's a mindset. They possess unbridled optimism, an unrivaled love for New Orleans, and the keen ability to reinvent and reimagine a stronger and better city. The renowned musician Trombone Shorty graces our cover and symbolizes everything we are fighting for — our music, our spirit, our heritage, and our people. Each person on our A-List, through their creativity, compassion, and sheer tenacity, is building pathways to the future and igniting hope. Their unique personalities and diverse range of life experiences allow us to see our multifaceted city from many perspectives. Armed with innovative ideas and ways to channel our energy for the greatest good, the A-List is just what we need now as we navigate uncharted waters. As Trombone Shorty said so well, "When this is all over, I think we'll have a new appreciation for our strength and we will celebrate." Cheers to the 2020 A-List.

WILLIAM LUTZ UPTOWN PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE New Orleans Saints

Describe what you love about what you do. I get to live out my dream every morning I wake up. I get to play in front of the best and most loyal fan base in the history of the National Football League. I love everything about it. Name something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. The beautiful historical feel of Uptown and the Lower Garden District. No matter the result of my day, my drive home through our beautiful streets filled with history will never be taken for granted. How do you see your industry evolving in response to the pandemic? By listening to professionals and working together, new protocols will be observed to keep everyone involved safe. It's a whole new approach and we will continue to be vigilant about every safety measure.

In what ways do you see New Orleans suited to meet our current challenges? When I think of New Orleans, I think of resilience. This city can come together through anything and everything. How has the pandemic impacted you on a personal level? Unfortunately, my wedding was canceled. We still got married and I cannot wait to have one heck of a makeup wedding. What would people be surprised to know about you? I am an avid outdoorsman. There's no better place than out on the water fishing or up in a tree stand on a hunt.

CLEVELAND SPEARS, III VISTA PARK PRESIDENT & CEO Spears Group

Describe what you love about what you do. I love being an entrepreneur that creates opportunities for young people, particularly young people of color. We use our company to nurture good ideas and business concepts that will bring people together. Why New Orleans? New Orleans is my hometown. I wouldn't want to do what I do anywhere else. The best thing about doing it here is I get to inspire other Black kids to show them what is possible. Describe what you see as our future. That we lean in on equity in order to create a more equitable city for all. That will create an environment for everyone to do better. This would help all that ails us — poverty, crime, education and health outcomes. What lessons will you take with you from the pandemic? This has reinforced things I already believed in — mental fortitude, tenacity, and most importantly, in the face of extraordinary adversity, true leaders shine brightest.

Describe what you love about what you do. There is a beauty to the logic of avian anatomy that provides a scientific grounding to the art of taxidermy. For me, what is artistically ideal is constrained by the underlying morphology of birds. The process doesn't begin with a blank canvas. Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. When strangers on the street wave to me or ask how I'm doing. When strangers help me bring a band saw or fully mounted grizzly bear up a flight of stairs. People are nice here! What coping mechanisms have you used to keep your goals alive during the pandemic? I exercise my body in the form of running, Pilates, and yoga, and my mind in the form of consuming good literature and listening to academic lectures online.

FITZ KERN OLD METAIRIE VICE PRESIDENT Kern Studios & Mardi Gras World

Describe what you love about what you do. The global nature of our work. In addition to Mardi Gras, we work year round all over the world — theme parks, museums, festivals, and even billboards. Combining traditional artistic methods we've used for over 80 years with cutting edge technology is exciting. What about New Orleans inspires you? Our enthusiasm to celebrate our culture all year is truly a unique aspect of New Orleans. How has the pandemic impacted you on a personal level? It makes you appreciate the things that you often take for granted. Missing iconic events like Jazz Fest and traditions like First Fridays reminds you how amazing our city is.

What about New Orleans inspires you?

If you've read Frenchmen, Desire, Good Children you know if sidewalks could speak, every single street in our city would have an amazing story to tell. These stories come to you with every footstep. If you're aware of it and open to it, you'll definitely feel it. What advice would you give your twenty-year-old self? It's okay to be more adventurous with haircuts. What would people be surprised to know about you? I'm terrified of roaches. Living in New Orleans affords me many opportunities to face my fears.

I have increased my proficiency by two words. It's a start

Describe what you love about what you do. I can't think of a more honorable and needed industry to work in. There are a lot of commodities in the world people love and want but are, in the grand scheme, not life changing or necessary. But shelter is. Home is. Why New Orleans? We take great pride in that our company was founded here in 1916 and is family owned. While this is where we are based, we have offices across the Gulf South and every place we are is special. I realize that sounds corny but Louisiana is truly a remarkable place; you can experience it with all five of your senses.

ELLIOT ANTHONY HUTCHINSON GENTILLY SENIOR BRAND & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER Son of a Saint

Describe what you love about what you do. Son of a Saint's work is tremendous and I stand on that statement without bias. We're transforming the lives of fatherless young men and, in turn, transforming this city. I feel a sense of privilege to serve as an example to these young men who overwhelmingly look like me. Why New Orleans? There is a need that cannot be ignored and it's greater than anyone can imagine. Being able to pour energy, time, talent, and resources back into New Orleans, which is a place that's given so much to the world, feels right and equitable. What about New Orleans inspires you? New Orleans is charming, intoxicating, and unapologetic about its perfections and imperfections, while simultaneously trying to evolve to a better version of itself. What advice would you give your twenty- year-old self? Be kinder to yourself. Remember that rejection will never define you. Develop a better relationship with the word "no" and work harder to hear the word "yes".

SUSAN ZACKIN OLD METAIRIE

WEDDING & EVENT PRODUCER Z Event Company & The Event Glossary

How has your industry been impacted by the pandemic? The effect ripples across the entire city. It's a multibillion dollar industry employing millions of people. Because events look seamless, many people do not realize the number of individuals affected — musicians, caterers, florists, installers, and creatives just to name a few. It has been devastating. What coping mechanisms have you used to keep your goals alive? I've had time to reflect and get the creative juices flowing to come up with new ways to employ and entertain people. We were the first to produce a Drive In Movie night and plan a Drive In Concert. I wanted to employ some of our industry and entertain the community that was in much need of some "comic relief"! It gave me the inspiration I needed to keep me from retiring. How is your company evolving in response? People are marking milestone occasions in smaller, more intimate groups. I'm working on plans that offer experiential evenings involving everything from famous chefs to famous artists in special locations or in private homes. Now more than ever we are grateful for life and it should be celebrated.

SHEBA TURK GENTILLY NEWS ANCHOR & AUTHOR WWL-TV

What do you think makes New Orleans a resilient city? What haven't we been through? We've dealt with so much loss, sadness, and neglect and we always come back stronger. Describe your charitable work or favorite cause. I love working with Soledad O'Brien's PowHERful Foundation. The foundation paid for me to graduate from UNO — otherwise I would not have finished school. They've sent several New Orleans girls to college. I mentor young girls and travel across the country sharing my journey. How has the pandemic impacted your industry? The television news industry depends on us talking to people and gathering information. Thankfully, we can do that through Zoom and Skype, but I certainly miss interacting in person and doing stories that require being around people in our community.

From the deep roots of culture, Architecture, and laissez faire attitude, I'm endlessly inspired and grateful to call New Orleans home. How has the pandemic impacted you on a personal level? I've really been able to "stop and smell the roses." For someone that is always on the go, I've actually been able to enjoy some downtime. It's made me think about the important things in life.

MASON HEREFORD CENTRAL CITY CHEF & OWNER Turkey and the Wolf & Molly's Rise and Shine Why New Orleans? Sometimes I'll stop at a corner store for a cold drink, some beef jerky or a beer, and I'll find myself talking to a complete stranger for 15 minutes. I leave feeling really happy. Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. Fried chicken and bird sauce from McHardy's, cracklin from Danny and Bonnie Seafood, short ribs from Addis, and margs at Barrel Proof with my wife Lauren and my dog Darla. Sometimes you just gotta deep fry your worries and wash 'em down with a mezcal marg. How has the pandemic affected your industry? What really keeps people coming back to restaurants is the way they feel. It's interacting with the restaurant's soul — servers, bartenders, and cooks — who genuinely enjoy making people feel good. A restaurant cannot exist the same way in a virtual setting. Social distancing, while saving lives, changes everything.

Does Solitaire on the iPad count?

What about New Orleans inspires you? The fact that you feel like you live in a beautiful old-world city but the vibe is fresh and new — like anything can and will happen. Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. A second line, because they are such an overt celebration and they seem to pop up spontaneously, inviting all to enjoy the fun. They just don't discriminate. How has the pandemic impacted you on a personal level? I've come to realize that, even with all the uncertainty, if every day you just say to yourself "I've got this, I can do it," then you can, just one day at a time. Describe what you love about what you do. That I get to choreograph for music videos, tours, TV, film, fashion, and for the stage. Every single one is different and it's taken me years to get to this place. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the finished product when I've added my choreographic voice. Why New Orleans? I am so thankful for New Orleans. I can say with my whole heart that it's where I really found myself as a woman and as an artist. It's such a special city, because it gives you space — to dream, to figure out who you are, and to make what you want while surrounded by the most incredible people in the world. Describe your personal style in three words. Colorful. Dramatic. Structured. What advice would you give your twenty- year-old self? Your work ethic and strong sense of patience are going to benefit you greatly. Don't ever entertain the thought of quitting when the roller coaster of life takes off. It will be worth it.

BEN JAFFE FRENCH QUARTER CREATIVE DIRECTOR & MUSICIAN Preservation Hall Something about New Orleans that puts you in a good mood. Turning on WWOZ. I'm immediately reminded of why I'm here: the musicians, the community, the people, the personalities. What advice would you give your twenty-year-old self? I've got lots of advice for my twenty-year-old self but doubt my twenty-year-old self would have paid any attention! What would people be surprised to know about you? The spectrum of music that inspires me. When I tell people one of my favorite bands is The Clash, I often get a strange look. How has the pandemic impacted you on a personal level? Preservation Hall closed its doors the second week of March and we haven't opened since. When we locked the doors, I knew the impact this would have on the community and felt an incredible sadness. I knew we had a responsibility to use our platform to advocate for the musicians. With the support of our fans, we've been able to support them with regular financial grants.

Describe what you love about what you do. I am an educator and facilitator at heart. I'm passionate about equity and inclusion and building a society that serves the most historically and socially marginalized people. Something about New Orleans that can always puts you in a good mood. The food! We have the tastiest and most accessible food in the country. You can dine at a 5-star restaurant or grab a poboy at a corner store and have an equally delicious experience. Where do you see New Orleans on the other side of this pandemic? I'm hoping that we become a more equitable city. People are more aware of the deep structural inequities and I'm praying that we come together to rebuild a more balanced economy that benefits the many, rather than the few. What advice would you give your twenty-year-old self? You are enough, just the way you are. Don't dim your light to make others more comfortable.

Describe what you love about what you do. I love the alchemy of art. Turning nothing into something. Changing the way we see ourselves and the way we see each other. Why New Orleans? We regularly turn our ugly into beauty, our pain into celebration. I learned what it means to be an artist from growing up here. Something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. The sounds of competing conversations at any family gathering, mixed with the smells of the food on the menu. Describe your work in three words. Paint where it ain't (four words, my bad).

Describe the greatest influence on your life? Growing up in a town in Southern California that was a beautiful kaleidoscope of different people. Many were first generation Americans who were proud of their heritage and cuisine. Being surrounded by people whose identities were defined by their families and communities gave me a strong personal compass. Describe what you see as our future. I'm concerned about the future of our beautiful city. If New Orleans is to have any future, we must focus on improving the quality of life for people who spend a lifetime here, not just a weekend. I'd like to see tax money spent on the systemic issues which plague our quality of life such as housing, health, fresh food, education, and poverty. How has the pandemic impacted your industry? It has completely devastated our industry. The Louisiana Restaurant Association predicts that up to 50% of restaurants here will close permanently and that figure does not account for ancillary businesses, such as mine. We need tax incentives that prioritize local businesses over those from out of state and policies that support the people who make New Orleans the most incredible city in the country.

Describe what you love about what you do. My business allows me to travel, explore fashion, and meet interesting people from all over the world. I never considered how rewarding this would be. I did not expect to bring such joy and confidence into women's lives. Name something about New Orleans that can always put you in a good mood. New Orleans puts me in a good mood because you can go to a coffee shop and make friends, you can walk down the street and people say hi, you can wear a costume just because you feel like it that day. Describe your charitable work or favorite causes. I am on the board of NOMA — the museum and its Sculpture Garden are one of the crown jewels of our city. And I proudly serve on the board of Second Harvest Food Bank. They are working overtime to provide the basic necessity of food to those in need. What advice would you give to your twenty- year-old self? Don't measure yourself by degrees or salaries. There is no life order to personal accomplishments. You have to find inner happiness, otherwise none of the rest really matters.

Take the first step. It may feel foreign, but it will lead to your next step. What would people be surprised to know about you? I started DOCPACE when I was 22, that even surprises me!

TROMBONE SHORTY LAKEVIEW MUSICIAN, PRODUCER & AUTHOR Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue/ The Trombone Shorty Foundation & Music Academy

What do you think makes New Orleans a resilient city? People here are strong. Something inside of us gets passed down across the generations. When this is over, we'll have a new appreciation for that strength, and we will celebrate. How has the pandemic impacted you on a personal level? The quiet is the strangest thing to me; it's eerie. For a city that thrives on music — not just clubs and concerts and festivals, but a horn player on the corner or a brass band marching up the street — now you hear less of that. That's the thing that hits me the hardest.

Something about New Orleans that always puts you in a good mood. I love that even people who aren't musicians have music in their souls. People say hello to you and it sounds like they're singing your name or putting some rhythm on it. It's a different vibe than any other place I've ever been. Describe your charitable work or favorite cause. My foundation is very close to my heart. There's an unspoken tradition in New Orleans of passing down knowledge. Older musicians taught me what influenced them, right out in the street. I thought that it was right for me to do the same thing for the next generation. I want these kids to take our music to another level and keep the legacy of New Orleans alive. What about New Orleans inspires you? This is a city of constant reinvention and rebirth. Contrary to both the reality and perception that it is narrowly steeped in tradition and even static, the cultural landscape here is constantly evolving. Something about New Orleans that always puts you in a good mood. Walking into the Fairgrounds for Jazz Fest with thousands of other fest goers in the beautiful Spring weather — cocktail in hand and a chair strapped to my back — never fails to deliver one of those "I am so lucky to live here!" moments.

Describe what you love about what you do. I love working closely with non-profits, particularly those who are making a tremendous impact on arts and culture. At The Helis Foundation, we believe that ensuring community access to art of all disciplines is critical. It's exciting to witness the energetic efforts of arts leaders as we work to ensure that arts opportunities in New Orleans are diverse and innovative. What lessons will you take with you from the pandemic? I have been – yet again – reminded that change is the only constant and adaptability to and acceptance of this fact is survival.

Describe what you love about what you do. My favorite aspect of my job is the fact that I can take the same four or five basic ingredients (sugar, flour, butter, and eggs) and turn them into thousands of dishes. It makes me feel like a magician. Something about New Orleans that always puts you in a good mood. Walking along a quiet street in the Quarter or Marigny and hearing a solo jazz musician playing a tune. There's just something special about the sound of a trumpet echoing through the streets. What coping mechanisms have you used to keep your goals alive during the pandemic? Well, Total Wine opened in June…but I have also focused on other interests I've had for a while and haven't had the time for, like writing and teaching. I've been working on new recipes and have done some virtual demos from home. What would people be surprised to know about you? I'd love to see our city invest in her people in meaningful ways. I believe we should focus on making quality of life better for residents (tourists will enjoy that too). Why New Orleans? My family has been here for multiple generations and I care deeply about our culture, history, and most importantly our future. This city has given me so much on a personal level. I think it's important for every generation to leave it better than we found it. I've traveled the world and there is no place on earth like New Orleans. How do you see your industry evolving in response to the pandemic? The hospitality industry will be smaller and employees will be paid better. Pay structures will have to change in order for our industry to survive. As we evolve, I think we'll see more equitable houses. What coping mechanisms have you used to keep your goals alive? PMA: Positive Mental Attitude. Describe your charitable work or favorite cause.
